Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread!LOL! Definitely Imperial(Original post by Rahul.S)
maths with econ....75% maths
(let's hope this is a moot point and you just get into Trinity like you actually want to)

Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread!don't rub it in(Original post by fruktas)
Tomorrow is wednesday which means it's time for another mock! This time STEP III. Only need a 2 :P
I'm actually doing better on III than II. apparently it suits me more

Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread!(Original post by fruktas)
Imperial, because that's my insurance haha. Althought I am very sad that I didnt insure warwick
(Original post by shamika)
LOL! Definitely Imperial

I would of firmed Warwick if I got rejected by Trinity......economics is for PUSSIES....I AGREEE!(Original post by Dog4444)
Economics is for pussies.
i guess i know what to do
thanks guys

Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread!I thought II was harder than III.....but I reckon it was mainly because I started III after getting use to how to tackle STEP questions(Original post by ben-smith)
don't rub it in
I'm actually doing better on III than II. apparently it suits me more
But now I think its the same difficulty
btw ive seen alot of people that get more marks in III than II....one guy last year got 70ish in II but 100+ in III
-
Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread!hahaha! If I am honest, I'm doing better on III too, for some bizarre reason it seams more straightforward (I dont know if this word can ever be in used in the context with STEP but ah well) .(Original post by ben-smith)

Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread!I think the questions on III stretch you less (and/or guide you more) but use more advanced content.(Original post by fruktas)

Remember some people would be just finishing FP2/FP3 as they go into those exams, then have to sit STEP III a week or so later... poor souls. -
Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread!I'll know that feeling next year. That said I'm self teaching it over the summer.(Original post by Xero Xenith)

Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread!well one guy I know learnt fp2 fp3 very near to his STEP III exam and got an S.......Im guessing the content was fresh in his head(Original post by Xero Xenith)

Very good idea. I also self-taught OCR FP2 over the summer of year 12 and did it in January, which gets rid of some stress for June(Original post by wcp100)
I'll know that feeling next year. That said I'm self teaching it over the summer.
But maybe check the specification for your exam board and match it up to the STEP one - out of FP2 and FP3, one has more relation to STEP III than the other, but which one it is depends on your exam board
(I think usually the one with vectors and matrices is the one with less relation to STEP.)

Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread!I don't think I would be allowed to do any modules early. But at least I'd have the knowledge. Also considering I think it's only me doing FP3 then the one to one lessons may be more productive. I know my teacher likes STEP; occasionally slipping one into the lesson.(Original post by Xero Xenith)

FP3 has all that in it, but it also have the hyperbolic functions and integration techniques in it. I have done most the exercises in the M4 book so that might help with STEP III. I might have to explain myself a little more.
Whilst I haven't officially studied any modules other than C1 I've self taught since GCSE so that why my self teaching and official learning don't match up.
Edexcel BTW.
Edit: I'm doing FP2 and FP3 -

That sure is impressive, are you applying for maths then? How hard are M3/M4 compared to M1/M2? -
Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread!IIRC Edexcel M4 isn't that useful for STEP III. (Or maybe it's M3?) I do know M5 can be useful though.(Original post by wcp100)

(I have an MEI M5-M6 textbook - half the book is on using FP2-3 results in mechanics. Motion in polar co-ordinates? Angular momentum as a cross product? Kufufu.
)
You sure are lucky having teachers that throw STEP questions in to normal lessons
-
Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread!Nope. I'm applying to do engineering. It's just STEP has always fascinated me. It might be nice to do it without the pressure a lot of people here have. To be honest they are a great deal harder. The jump from m2 to m3 is bigger than the jump from m3 to m4. The latter two requiring just that bit extra maths knowledge. M4 certainly requires FP3 integration to solve the differential equations.(Original post by Extricated)

It's nice.
I'll go over M5 in the summer too. I haven't done anything on angular momentum and only ever briefly looked at moments of inertia. I did us the cross product for a vector moments question in M1 whilst doing soloman. It cut the working down so much
It's only one. I think the others disapprove
-
Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread!Yeah... I've been trying to get hold of their FP3 book (or even the old S5-S6 for Markov chains which is now in FP3) but it's not anywhere for cheap - though Bookboon seem to have some good explanations in their free PDFs. edit: no they don't.(Original post by wcp100)

I'd prefer the actual book but I don't have £20 spare
and if I did I'd spend it on chicken anyway.

It's awesome but to be honest I wouldn't go out of my way to get it for STEP; the only really useful STEP content is some of the stuff in the vectors chapter; matrices are no longer in STEP papers so there's no chance of Markov Chains coming up, and there are long longer STEP questions based on groups
Despite prefering the pure STEP questions, I've found doing the most advanced modules in the MEI syllabus that the biggest help has been learning circular motion, SHM, moments of inertia, expectation algebra and pgfs and mgfs; it's helped me from getting from grade 1/2 last year in STEP II and STEP III to at least a grade 1 if not an S in all the mocks i've done so far this year for both STEP II and STEP III; so hopefully Cambrdige here I come
(let's hope this is a moot point and you just get into Trinity like you actually want to)

It's nice.
