Yeah, I took a risk :L, I'm thinking I maybe should have firmed Warwick and chosen Bath as my insurance instead. If I don't get at least a 2 on step 1, I'm screwed

I really want to go to Imperial, but because I think I'll get a U in step 2, I don't think I have a chance, even if I beg
I probably shouldn't say this since you're probably my competition for a second life but I think it's always worth calling them up, especially if you've surpassed your A-Level offer. I'm thinking along the lines of "I had no help whatsoever with STEP so I gave it my best shot despite a lack of preparation and it didn't go my way." But I think that sounds maybe a little too negative.

I'd never rely on STEP to get you into university because of how random it is. But I admire your courage.

Don't worry. Warwick is my firm choice and Bath is my insurance, however my Bath offer includes STEP as well as my Warwick offer. So, I too have to achieve at least a grade 2 in STEP I (I would say STEP I/ STEP II but seriously f*** STEP II - I know I've failed that!). In the event that I achieve a grade 2 though I need the A* in FM for Warwick, which I'm kind of quietly confident of as well. But getting the grade 2 for me, is quite difficult. Now look, I HATE dwelling on STEP especially after the exam but when I came out of that exam I thought I had 4.5 solutions, which would've been fantastic. But after a while I think I've had a revelation that at some point in 2 of those questions I made fatal errors causing the final answers to be incorrect. So, I can't be sure of those questions - and to be honest I can't be sure of the others I answered either! I'm just more sure of some of them than others.

Anyway the point is, I am in a similar position to you. Be positive, not negative. I'm always negative, but things often work out positively when you don't expect it. I know STEP is a whole new monster when compared with A level exams but I recall many maths modules I did last year and in january this year which I thought didn't go that well - I was always pleasantly surprised with good results. So, don't worry too much about STEP. Most people find it really difficult anyway - don't trust the TSR demographic! You've probably done better than you think you have!

They have a separate one every year, so i'd assume so

Just realised results day is close and have some questions..

    1. Im not sure if someone has already asked this but when are the STEP results released on thursday?

    2. Has there been any update regarding the situation with STEP III Q1?

3.When are the grade boundaries released?

    4. Specific to cam. If I miss my step offer what will happen with regards to track/summer pool, should I ring up if track says im rejected or hasn't updated?

The college which has made you an offer gets first chance. If you fill your offer - you're in. If you miss by too much, you will be rejected. On the boundary, you may be accepted or summer pooled. That decision will be made before Thursday.

UCAS will be notified of acceptance or rejection and will eventually update their system. So the first you learn may either be from Track or from a happy e-mail, or by inferring acceptance from STEP results at midnight.

If you are pooled, your college will tell you; maybe by phone or e-mail. You then swim whilst your friends party. Normally pool decisions are made by Friday and you are notified of good news quickly by phone or e-mail. Bad news arrives slowly

You need take no action until you are made an offer by a different college, in which case you can choose whether to accept or reject.

Referring to the Freedom of Information Act, I see no reason why the following should not be here.

Summer Pool and Confirmation, August 2012, Cambridge Admissions Office.

I don't think people are fished out of the pool until Friday, but then again, Jack's link does suggest that Maths works differently than most subjects. Sigh, this is probably the hardest part. Good luck all!

Off topic: why on earth are courses like Philosophy and Music 'number controlled'? That seems really rubbish, although I'm guessing everyone with an offer makes it

Midnight - that is the boundary between Wednesday and Thursday, online. Otherwise Thursday morning at your school / college.

    2. Has there been any update regarding the situation with STEP III Q1?
Not that I've seen beyond their initial response saying they were sorry and that they were working on a 'fair' solution. I'm guessing they will release some notes on that with the grade boundaries (perhaps).

3.When are the grade boundaries released?
As far as I can make out, last year it was the Wednesday. The year before it was the Tuesday. (Before results Thursday). The full statement on results doesn't appear until autumn.

I emailed them, and can confirm that this is the intended procedure.

    Good luck!

Just for those of you who will be disappointed on Thursday - I didn't make my Cam offer nearly 20 years ago. I was devastated.

I still had a great time at Uni, and through a series of coincidences I ended up getting a really interesting job in the BBC Science department - lined up during my final term at Uni. If I'd made my offer and gone to Cam that never would have happened. (It really was an awesome job - I've been to every Nasa site!)

I eventually transitioned into programming and writing (textbooks, hence I loiter on here) instead of making documentaries, and I absolutely love what I do, and can do it from home, which is bliss.

So - however things turn out for you on Thursday, there can be opportunities for exciting adventures in the future.

Nobody who tackles STEP in earnest has really 'failed'. The majority of people who get an A* in Maths and Further Maths on Thursday still couldn't tackle a STEP question, and many who have the raw capacity would be scared to commit to the hard work involved in preparing for STEP.

Remember: STEP is a fickle creature, you all know that - if it wasn't a good paper for you then that's really unfortunate, but if you know you were knocking out 4 or 5 complete solutions to some papers in practice then the reality is that you *are* good enough, but this time you didn't get a winning ticket. It sucks, but you don't suck.

Finally - if you were sure you'd nailed it and it turns out that you didn't, just think of all those mathematicians in history who've published a 'proof', so confident in their work that they shared it with their peers, only to find that a trivial error had slipped past them. It happens to the best.

Heck, I'm **** scared about my offer from Warwick, but I can't imagine what some must feel with Cambridge. Good luck everyone.

Time to take my mind off it. Pulp fiction perhaps?

Thank you, and thanks for the encouragement with getting over it if we don't get in. Out of interest, where did you study if you don't mind me asking?

God I really have not even the slightest clue on how things have gone. A month ago I felt certain of a 1 in STEP III and of at least a high 2 in STEP II but now I'm not sure if I even managed 2, 2. Course I can't even remember the papers properly and certainly can't remember how I did properly - just my brain veering towards pessimism.

Say what you want, but after being a step(the irony haha) away from Cambridge, any other uni won't seem as good. I mean, us Mathematicians deserve to get in regardless of our STEP grades. Others worry about getting A*AA in their A levels so they can meet their offer, but what do we do? Most of us get A*AA or A*A*A offers + STEP, and STEP is no A level for you. The amount of work all of us have done to prepare, I mean, it is honestly not fair! If they have it for maths, have entrance exams for all other subjects..

Anyway, good luck for tomorrow night future Mathmos, that's when time will really slow down even if you are stationary ! I hope I will be able to join you all in October
