Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread! My Maths teacher's graduated from Oxford, but said that previous years there were people invited to this thing.(Original post by Farhan.Hanif93)
I was under the impression that you go to a comparatively good state comp (/mentioned your maths teacher being from Oxford)? If so, that would probably explain it.
Maybe it is not based only on this criterion, but surely it will be a major factor in their decision.

*grumble grumble* ...still wanted to go to Cambridge... *grumble*
Well that's changed my view on things. I would have imagined that they only had enough spaces to take those who get pretty much no help whatsoever. May have been wrong, there's not a lot of info out there about the whole thing.(Original post by gff)

Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread! They might look at the school's record. Last year, one guy from my school got in and achieved SS (apparently close to full marks) so that might be a factor(Original post by Farhan.Hanif93)

Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread!Yeah that probably had some bearing on the whole situation. The fact that you had another maths offer holder last year suggests that your school is likely to be quite good at this maths business (or very lucky); as you probably know, most schools are lucky to have 1 or 2 Oxbridge offers across all subjects.(Original post by ben-smith)

(That said, you know you don't need it as much as some others anyway.

Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread!
It's a difficult one because clearly they've got finite resources (particularly if its interactive rather than lecture based) so they have to choose somehow. For those who didn't get a place, don't worry too much about it. Plenty of people have got in through their own efforts.
(Conversely if you are lucky enough to have a place make the most of it!) -
Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread!Oh maths camp, that was very fun indeed(Original post by TheUltimateProof)
Yep! I was surprised to get a place despite putting down that my school is giving me help (minimal). Sounds like it'll be a very fun 5 days. Be cool/weird seeing some of you guys too haha
If any of you want to ask any questions aboutMaths campSTEP school, feel free to ask, I don't bite

Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread! What were the evenings like. Social activities, more maths or anything like that? Were you aloud out of the college much?(Original post by cpdavis)

Oh and how many hours of maths a day (excluding self study) did you get through-ish.
Thanks in advance! -
Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread!Well mainly the evenings were set activities (such as films, going to the observatory etc) and then we then had our hang out area and a football field. We also had access to the gym. We weren't allowed out of college as such, but we did have a few trips outside though.(Original post by TheUltimateProof)

In terms of maths per day, it was like a typical school day. We had 3 main tutors help us, as well as a couple of sessions the man himself Siklos. You are also put into groups of about 12 and this is your group for the whole week and when you do the online tutorials (which consist of using a graphic tablet and answering STEP questions online)
Although it's quite intense, it does give you a taster as to what life as a Cambridge student is like. But it is a lot of fun though

Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread!I was very interested if you could use the gym, but I felt very stupid to actually ask someone about that! Thank you !(Original post by cpdavis)

What sort of thing is it? Just videos of people speaking, or do we get some questions to work through before hand ? -
Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread!don't bother knowing them, but it'd certainly be worth knowing what they are and being familiar with their general form.(Original post by fruktas)
For STEP III, the specification does not seem to mention anything the use of Reduction Formulae involving integration. Is it useful to cover it, or should I not bother? Any advice? -
Re: The 2012 STEP Prep Thread! Thanks. If I decide to stay in on a Saturday, it's like a tradition to do maths! Am I the only one haha ?(Original post by ben-smith)
