Maths (Higher) was pretty vile. The head of maths in my school was furious with the second paper because a lot of the questions were inaccessible to us before - since nothing like them had ever come up. Because of this, he's pretty adamant that the boundaries for an A (which I need for a university conditional offer) will drop. I was repeating the subject and got 90% in the prelims, and after that exam I felt terrible, it was as if all of my work was for nothing.

Have you heard much from many people about the exam, Sam? (inadvertent rhyme)

Try emailing again, but in the meantime you might want to check your email account - have you checked Spam?
Yes I have checked my spam box and all that. I will try and email them again using different email client.

Hopefully it is just an admin error and that's why I am not reviving any kind of email from them.

There has been a fair amount of comment about Maths. To be honest, every year there is a fair amount of comment about one of the papers. Hard to say whether this is more pronounced than usual. But if everyone has found it tough, then the boundaries will be adjusted downwards to compensate. In any case, with 90% on the prelim, you would have a very good chance of appeal I would have thought - though of course, that might have been an overly easy paper, so I couldn't guarantee anything!

Sam, are students allowed to appeal if they get a 2 in their final exam yet they got a 1 in their prelims? I was told that the SQA rarely grant a pupil an appeal unless the difference in grades is significant..

Do the SQA frequently grant appeals for one grade higher?

I have close friends who were moved up from 2's to 1's on appeal in their maths exam last year.

Quick question, may sound stupid. I noticed that on most of the exam papers it said write in blue or black ink, and on one it said write in pen. Would I be penalized in any way for using a pencil to write all of my answers?

Appeals upward do happen which is why it's always worth making an effort for prelims.

No, as long as it's legible - pencil rubs out more easily than pen, hence the instruction.

Hello, I made a pretty bad mistake in which I didn't notice the first page of section B of my biology higher (i don't know how, i think i just flicked over and started writing on the page to the right as that's where it usually starts ) and only realised when i went home to look at a scan of the paper, if i don't get my grade will i still be able to appeal?

    thanks

You would have to discuss this with your school after you get your results - all appeals would have to go through them. It will depend on how you did in your prelim,a nd how they predicted you would do in the exam. Hopefully you won't need it!

Higher Maths - here's the official word on this:

"SQA has not apologised for the Higher Maths exam. There have been some comments about the difficulty of a few of the questions. A Higher exam is intended to challenge candidates and to do so fairly. All questions are based on content from the course and were written and checked by experienced Maths teachers.

You will be aware that SQA operate a Grade Boundary system whereby exam teams meet each year after the exams but before the results are issued to ensure that the standards of our exams are maintained from year to year. This allows any adjustments required to be made to ensure that a candidate who would have been awarded a C grade in previous years would still get a grade C if they had sat this year’s exam."

Ok, thanks! I just thought I might not be able to as it said on the booklet we got that we had to attempt all parts of the exam to appeal

I'm assuming this is reciprocal for a candidate who would have gotten an A or a B in previous years too, right?

Sam! I've just realised that what I thought was my candidate number isn't actually my candidiate number. On my wee blue card I have written in the find two number the wrong way around (ie '60' instead of '06'). Is this something I should do something about, I wrote it on the front of my script for Higher Maths, English and Chemistry?

I did that for all my Standard Grades haha, I just told one of the deputy heads at my school and he sorted it. All my results came as expected

I think someone who scraped an A this year would have failed last year and someone who scraped an A last year would have failed this year.
