Re: AQA AS Geography Unit 2 24th Jan
Whilst 71% is a huge number of people it seems that Knowsley an area in Merseyside's inner city is the "Benefits Capital" of Britain:

Plus the geography book with the chief examiner as the series editor stated that each section should be measured in its constituent parts, supporting that it should be 71% -
Re: AQA AS Geography Unit 2 24th Jan
That skills paper was utterly atrocious, my Geography teachers were fuming afterwards!
1) The Triangle graph stumped me completely! Never seen one in my life, just dotted some in the bottom right randomly... Then explained the graph via the given information/plots (and not mine..)
2) Secondary research/information or whatever it is. Didnt have a clue... Just left it blank.
3) That bar chart would have been an easy few marks... Had they asked it properly! Seriously that could easily have been a trick question, the examiner clearly was a very sly sad man - I put 71% or something, at least it agrees with the general consensus.
The second half was very straightforward, quite happy with it - However I would have said it was just an 'average' question had it been a more straightforward first half ... -
Re: AQA AS Geography Unit 2 24th JanYeah that was 2 and they might have a 'carried foward error mark' which means it doesn't matter if you did the bar graph wrong you could still get marks for explaining it.(Original post by popnit)
How many marks was the bar chart question? I mean, just the drawing of it..not the explanation bit. -
Re: AQA AS Geography Unit 2 24th Jan
You only get 1 mark for doing something with the data in the description question, so as long as you made valid points like ...the inner city value was bigger than the others etc, you should get 4 marks, and the actual graph was 3, so maybe a mark per correctly plotted point?

Re: AQA AS Geography Unit 2 24th Jan
what did people put for the 8marker?
i put about having a high percentage of dependant=not much tax in area=less services, old people=grey pound=health shops, charity shops, travel agents, pressure on health services, little business for fashion shops, and then i ran out of ideas:/ -
Re: AQA AS Geography Unit 2 24th Jan
That geography exam was extremely unfair to all applicants.
Firstly, they did not give you anywhere NEAR enough time to answer the questions. People who knew more were penalized as they wanted to write everything they knew, and so of course fell behind time wise. An exam should only be a test of knowledge and not knowledge and how damn fast you can write it.
Secondly, the secondary data question was extremely unfair to many schools. My school used secondary data in our enquiry but many didn't, and so we're completely screwed at that question.
Finally the whole 36%/71% ordeal. There is NO possible way of telling from the information provided whether the graph should be cumulative or not. They could have given the statistic for say unemployment benefits in the rural-urban fringe so that it was clear which one it was. -
Re: AQA AS Geography Unit 2 24th Jan
Something of a mark scheme. Feel free to correct me on the question wording, or any answers. Fieldwork is obviously specific to what you did.
1a - (Describe?) 3 differences between the housing of Zone A and B (5)
I imagine 3x point with 2x development, or something similar. I touched on the density, the arrangement (terraces vs semis) and local land use (woodland, factories).
1bi - Mark two points on graph (2)
Results should fall roughly in line with the ones given, I think one strayed out a little.
1bii - Describe and Comment on how trends will affect provision (or similar) (8)
Similar to 'outline and comment on' questions from previous papers, mixed with a 'describe the trends' question. I made reference to how Merseyside in general had an ageing population compared to the national average, with more older people, and less younger and working-age people, and as a result more investment should be made toward older people (care homes etc...) and less on youth services.
1ci - Mark results on bar chart (2)
Stacked, should have added up to 71.
1cii - Work out the mean of (DLA?) and outline advantages of using the mean (3)
I imagine one mark for working out the mean (34/4=8.5) and then two for stating two advantages of the mean. I put that it draws from all figures, unlike the median or mode, and factors in anomalies, which is important in cases like Liverpool where it's important to recognise the strong increase toward the city centre, although I doubt these were 'textbook' advantages.
1ciii - Describe (and comment/give reasons?) on the trends (5)
I put that DLA shows a decrease with the exception of (3rd one), this could be due to the disabled needing more health services in the city centre, and the significant increase in JSA between Inner City and Suburbs, as the inner city has cheaper homes that attract more jobless people, and jobless may centralise to try and find work. Really any 2/3 trends should get the marks.
2a - Outline how location is suitable (4)
2b - Evaluate a method used to collect primary data (6)
2c - Outline how and why you used secondary data (5)
2d - Justify your use of analysis (5)
2e - With reference, summarise the conclusions of your findings. (5) -
Re: AQA AS Geography Unit 2 24th JanI'm going to have to re-sit it too(Original post by heavencanwait_)

Re: AQA AS Geography Unit 2 24th JanHaha thanks(Original post by rosiesaurus)
Dont worry about it til the results come out...
you can still lose around 5-9marks and still get full UMS points, and you can still lose about 15 raw marks and get an A
as long as you answered everything you'll be fine, just try and distract yourself til March
I think most of the questions were okay but the very last one threw me off track a bit
