Re: UNOFFICIAL MARK SCHEME - AQA AS Chemistry 13/01/2012 (UPDATED)Oh well done aswell for the A! oh did you're school do you chem isa before the jan exam?(Original post by When you see it...)
Just out of interest, does anyone have access to the 'official' mark scheme for this paper.
How have you done on your isa? I got 100 UMS for this but am on like an E for the isa!
An E... ouch! you have to improve! It be so sad that your hard work in exam preparation goes unoticed cuz of this isa....
I would advice googling webites for ISA preparation... past papers ect.
And going to a chemistry teacher who doesnt teach u, if u get what I mean?
I haven't done mine yet.. do it on monday.. more worried now u said u got an e

Re: UNOFFICIAL MARK SCHEME - AQA AS Chemistry 13/01/2012 (UPDATED)I am doing the other isa soon as well (I don't think we are allowed to discuss it though) so hopefully I can go up. ISAs are complete BS IMO. I got full UMS (60/60 I think it is, as long as they don't change the grade boundaries) for the Biology ISA yet really low for the first chemistry one. Also, my teacher has docked some of my PSA marks, so my overall cw grade will be way lower than my exams (hopefully I can improve though).(Original post by PowerPuff)

BTW don't be worried, just make sure you revise the topics you have been told and hope for a good paper (they are really inconsistent with the standard of these papers) because you can never really be sure that you have done well on ISAs because they are a load of BS. Also, the grade boundaries are crazy high for the Chemistry ISA (and increasing all the time) so it is kind of out of your hands how well you do (as frustrating as that may be to hear) - just make sure you revise as that is all you can do. Did you do AQA science at GCSE? The ISAs are similar to that except less 'how science works' questions. -

Here is the paper and mark scheme -

I'm going to print out an old GCSE Isa paper and just remind myself how to answer the how science work questions... are you saying its mostly calculations then? -
Re: UNOFFICIAL MARK SCHEME - AQA AS Chemistry 13/01/2012 (UPDATED)It could be anything really, I don't think we are allowed to discuss specifics. You're better off printing an A level ISA paper, although even that would only be useful for getting used to the structure - it won't necessarily give an indication of what the paper will be like. Have you done the practical?(Original post by PowerPuff)

And yes I've done the practicial.... Look you've obviously had a bad encounter with the paper and your slightly rubbing off the negativity on me.
I've done the practise ISA paper and I felt comfortable, just going to go into the exam possitive, since you not helping me at all.
All I want to know is what areas I should be revising.. calculations.. methodology of the practical.. im not asking you 'What was question 1?' am i so lay off.

Bye.

Re: UNOFFICIAL MARK SCHEME - AQA AS Chemistry 13/01/2012 (UPDATED)Well done lol! One of my friends also got 69, but another got 64 and ended up with 98 UMS ! Outrageous!(Original post by When you see it...)
I got 69/70. Did you find it to be an easy paper? I remember everyone complaining that it was hard and then they ended up with As!
Personally, I was quietly confident that I have got over 67 raw marks, I thought it was certainly a paper slightly more obscure compared to the routine, but still within the reach of any capable student...simply revising all the content was enough, considering I did and don't do any extra chemistry out of my way, so the knowledge obtained from the textbook was enough so I don't see why people should complain!!
Loads of people in my school came out and were upset at the first question saying it had never come up before, even though we had it in our revision guide!! "Ludicrous..."
It wasn't easy but not nearly as hard as I had feared it could be, not too many difficult how science works questions for once!!!
Btw, how have you done in your ISA/PSA? on my first attempt i got 35/38, highest in my class, but which actually only translates to 85% UMS! I don't understand why these grade boundaries are so colossal! Having another attempt some time next week which is apparently an easier paper... -
Re: UNOFFICIAL MARK SCHEME - AQA AS Chemistry 13/01/2012 (UPDATED)I got 27/38 in my unit 1 ISA (I only got 4/8 for the practical, I lost all four accuracy marks). And if I assume I get all 12 PSA marks (which I probably won't), that will bring me up to 39/50, which going by last years grade boundaries is a D, and if I lose 2 or 3 PSA marks, I will be on an E. I managed to get an A (97/100) on the unit 1 exam, which shows just how crappy these ISA's are. But hopefully I will do better on my next ISA (on Thursday and Friday), my teacher said it is easier to get the practical marks. I'm not entirely sure why I just said all this, I guess I just wanted to complain about ISA's because I am not very good at them (and they're rubbish).(Original post by Mr Tough)

Re: UNOFFICIAL MARK SCHEME - AQA AS Chemistry 13/01/2012 (UPDATED)My teacher has already docked some of my PSA marks and considering that you need 46/50 (these are increasing all of the time) to get an A, I already am unlikely to get an A on that. On the first ISA, I got an E and have recently re-done the second one. I made two stupid mistakes on it, but think I've done better. There is still no way I will get an A overall for the cw component though.(Original post by Mr Tough)

Maybe the isa grade boundaries will be lower this year because everyone found the first one hard? A bit unlikely, but maybe.
I agree. When I sat that isa, our teachers assumed that we got all of the accuracy marks when telling us how we'd done, but I remember doing something wrong and getting completely the wrong results, so the extra lost marks would put me on... a U? After getting an A on the Unit 1.(Original post by brittanna)

Slightly in love with you here,
I'm in the same position, I got an A in the Unit 1 Exam and in this ISA my entire class got C and BELOW (mostly below) in which 80% of that failure I blame soley on my teacher (she thinks that the mere 5 people who got an A in our class, its down to her. How wrong she is). This is a pisstake all our hard work in the exam and these ISA's are going to ruin it all.
On the brink of tears here.

Re: UNOFFICIAL MARK SCHEME - AQA AS Chemistry 13/01/2012 (UPDATED)
Does anybody actually have the pdf to this paper, NOT the mark scheme?
And also I was wondering what people know about the EMPA practicals like what we could be doing and any tips etc, as our school has never done one for Chemistry and so it's a very daunting experience for me, as i don't really want to fail it. thanks :s -
Re: UNOFFICIAL MARK SCHEME - AQA AS Chemistry 13/01/2012 (UPDATED)Natty B posted both the question paper and the mark scheme on the previous page(Original post by revisionking)

pretty pleased considering how disastrously I thought the exam went...! Well done!
