Hopefully the other is against a big MLS name like LA Galaxy or the NY Red Bulls. -

Re: The Liverpool FC Thread VII
Can someone tell me why people call Dalglishs time at Newcastle United a complete and utter disaster when they won the Champions League albeit with a low league placing? I wasn't old enough to witness it it's just what I read
Also, what do you think about Vieras comments? Reminicent of Rafas rant about Fergie. Love how people get their knickers in a bunch when United breathe down their necks. Whats with the fear? -
Re: The Liverpool FC Thread VIIBasically, we had an amazing team under Keegan and qualified for the Champions League the year before by finishing 2nd (albeit after dropping a 12 point lead in the title race). When Dalglish took over, we were one of the top teams in the league and he did give us a second place finish.(Original post by lifeshard)

What makes Dalglish's time as Newcastle manager look bad was what happened the season after. We went from being one of the top teams in the country to being a midtable team, and not even an impressive one at that. While we got a couple of good results (a 3-2 win over Barcelona stands out), our league performances were inconsistent. Players like Ferdinand, Beardsley and Ginola were sold and Jon Dahl Tomasson was brought in. To put it in perspective, following our promotion in 1993, we had never finished outside the top 6 until Dalglish's first full season in charge, where we finished 13th.
Much like Liverpool's current situation, he did well to get us to a cup final (although we lost the FA Cup), was hurt by a big injury to our best player (similar to Lucas for Liverpool, we had Shearer injured for a long time) but ultimately bad league form made his run a failure. -
Re: The Liverpool FC Thread VIIKinda scary how not too disimilar the situations are, albiet with a few major differences. It seems Dalglishs transfer dealings are what let him down at Newcastle and it's the same right now. And he excels at cup competitions.(Original post by Stu Laverty)

I just watched a video of Newcastle back in 1997, highlights of a win 4 - 3 over Liecester City. The goal from 7 minutes (the winner) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e75ghS40ahM.. That seems to be how Dalglish wants us to play. But it just isn't working!! We have not got the players for it to be effective!! Although this is my only reasoning for wanting Dalglish to maybe get one more season, because I can SEE what he's trying to accomplish what makes me not want him to get another season is that his ''eye'' for choosing the best players doesn't seem very good. -
Re: The Liverpool FC Thread VIIThat's why everyone was initially pretty optimistic about the Commoli/Dalglish partnership - Commoli finds 'em, signs 'em and then Kenny gets them playing...unfortunately it's not quite worked out like that...(Original post by lifeshard)

Re: The Liverpool FC Thread VIII just can't believe how wrong Kenny has got it. I'm afraid of what's gonna happen this summer.(Original post by DannyBoy123)

Re: The Liverpool FC Thread VIIBelieve me, if Newcastle won the Champions' League during Dalglish's time, the party would still be going on in Geordieland.(Original post by lifeshard)

Re: The Liverpool FC Thread VIIThat's what I had asked. I was like why do people consider his time at Newcastle a failure if he won them the CL? But now I see that never happened.(Original post by Clip)
Did it not strike you as strange (being a Liverpool fan and all) that you haven't been harping on about how great Dalglish would have been to have won the Champions League as a manager?
I can't believe I actually thought Newcastle had won it, as recently as 1997 as well
