Hey i was just wondering why do Shia's hurt themselves or hit themselves during Muharram wen in Islam ur not allowed to hurt even a cm of urself. isn't selfharm Haraam for whatever reason?^o)

alot of shias do it to mourn for the death of the Khalifa.
Allah has never said that you should put pain upon ursleves-
but these people still hurt themselves, until blood comes out.
They're mourning besucae they think tht if their ancestors hadnt left
the Khalifa, he wouldnt have died so miserably.
I'm soo sorry if I get somehting wrong here. But thats what Ive heard. =)

It's to show their respect and love for Hasan (one of their Imams) for all the trials and tribulations his been through.

But why can't they show their respect innocuously? Why the need to smite themselves?

I still fail to comprehend how Shia's justify this act of self-harm.

Not all Shi'te Muslims do this. I know an Iraqi Shia who is a very good Muslim - doesn't wear the headscarf, but prays her five times a day prayers. My auntie is also a Shia and she is a really good Muslim too. There are minor differences between the beliefs of the two sects... but there can be obvious differences in the traditions and actions.
