Enquiry about criminal record
Hi all,
I am applying to 4 universities this year, all computing related degrees. However, I have a nick on my criminal record from 3 years ago for shoplifting. I was a stupid, ill informed idiot and won't EVER do it again.
Do I have to declare this on my UCAS application? It was a fairly petty crime.
Thanks,
Piccolo -
Re: Enquiry about criminal record
Did you get a conviction? Or just like a warning? (Sorry, not supersure how the system works in the UK)
I dont think you have to disclose anything since most uni's admission policy for students with a criminal conviction states that you only have to disclose relevant convictions and that they promote equality.
Relevant convictions are
"Those convictions for offences against the person, whether of a violent or sexual nature, and convictions for offences involving unlawfully supplying controlled drugs or substances where the conviction concerns commercial drug dealing or trafficking.”
(Obv. its a bit different for people studing medicine, health related studies or children/vulnerable adults)
BUT do check with the unis on their policies -it should be the same for most of them, the info will most likely be on theire website -Im no expert, so you should look into this yourself.
Hope it helped a little bit, everybody makes mistakes and then learn from it,
good luck with your application!!! -
Re: Enquiry about criminal recordI think there is a question on the UCAS form about it but I'm not sure whether it includes both spent and unspent convictions.(Original post by Piccolo)

Re: Enquiry about criminal record
I'm pretty sure if you got anything from a warning to conviction you need to declare it on your UCAS application. It's better to be honest about it than have the university find out another way and risk rejecting you for not telling them the full information.
Please don't do it again, though

Re: Enquiry about criminal recordSorry to hear they had something stolen - no sympathy for the coursework though, any sensible person would back it up on a memory stick!(Original post by Aspiringlawstudent)
Someone at my university had their laptop stolen two days ago from the library.
It had all of their coursework on it.
The deadline was today.
They've likely failed now.
I hope you don't get in. No sympathy for thieves. -
Re: Enquiry about criminal recordIf it's a warning/caution i dont think you have to add it(Original post by Piccolo)

Re: Enquiry about criminal recordWhat's the point of having a safety backup if you're going to keep it in the same place? LOL(Original post by Aspiringlawstudent)

Re: Enquiry about criminal recordThe idea is that if the laptop breaks, you have a spare copy.(Original post by Maddog Jones)
