does anyone know if you are meant to include synoptic links or IDA in section B of the exam paper? -
Re: Psychology AQA A PSYA4 18th June 2012!My teacher has said only pick 2 of the models for each approach (biological, cognitive, learning) and just generalise them to Smoking/Gambling. The maximum amount of marks for any one question will be about 10 for this section, so 2 theories should be enough.(Original post by salad_fingers)
Models of addiction is tragic, how am I supposed to learn 3 types of model for 3 stages of addiction for two separate addictions?
That's 3 x 3 x 2 = 18 sections!
Has anyone found a good way of learning all this?

Re: Psychology AQA A PSYA4 18th June 2012!They are not essential, but can still be used to gain evaluative marks if you are struggling to recall A02 research.(Original post by Mr.mAddd)

Re: Psychology AQA A PSYA4 18th June 2012!
For Schizophrenia I can't recall seeing a question on therapies for quite a while.
They had some form of question on issues with classification/diagnosis for two exams running didn't they? So hopefully that won't come up!
(I could be wrong by the way, just going by memory of looking back through past papers.) -

yeah that is what i meanOk here's my best shot, with what notes I have so far..
First of all, I'd recommend getting yourself familiar with the layout of a real psychological journal. I've attached a link to an example of one in the spoiler below.
Spoiler:Show
Don't worry, you don't have to read it all/learn it for your exam, it's just an example. Just to get you familiar with the layout!
See if you can spot the following in the journal:
- Abstract
- Introduction/Aim
- Method - containing; participants, procedure and instructions
- Results
- Discussion
- References
So what are these items you have listed?
Abstract - Is a short summary of the study covering everything you did from the aims, hypothesis, method, procedure, results and conclusions. It is usually around 100-200 words and is found at the start of a journal, at the top or on the front cover.
Introduction/Aims - What the psychologists would like to investigate. This may include previous research or theories from which the psychologists propose what they think will happen, i.e a hypothesis.
Method - A detailed description of what the psychologists did (this could be several pages in the case of some journals), giving enough information for another researcher to read the method and replicate the study without any problems. As highlighted above, this section should include the participants (their age, sex, ethnicity, whatever else), the testing environment (i.e. a lab setting/natural environment), the procedures used to collect data and any instructions given before and after (brief and debrief, respectively).
Results - What the psychologists found. This will more than likely include statistical data in the form of inferential tests, tables, averages and graphs.
Discussion - The psychologists offer explanations based on what they have found and try to sum up their results. They may also consider implications of their study and note any ethical issues they may have raised. Suggestions could be made to improve further research.
References - The full details of any journal articles, previous research, magazines, books, whatever else that have been used in the journal.
So that is the layout of a journal. I don't know if you have been over Standardised Instructions, Standardised Debrief, Consent Forms and Operationalised Variables?
I'm not really sure how much of this we need for the exam, maybe somebody could clarify.
So anyway, I will go over a few of those things and maybe some people could add information where they see fit.
Consent forms
You need to your participants if they agree to giving consent to partake in your study. You may be asked to design this in your exam.
I've been told to set it out like this:
State what the participants will have to do: 'During this study you will be required to do the following... (Explain the tasks they have to carry out, whether it be a web-based survey or a questionnaire, state the time they have to complete the task(s), how many questions they have to answer, the sample size and age range, from which schools/cities.)'
State the purpose of the experiment: The purpose of this experiment is to.. (INSERT PURPOSE HERE, such as to investigate the expectations of drinking)
State any ethical issues which may arise: Please be reminded, you have the right withdraw from the experiment at any time. You may also close the survey at any point and your results will not be saved, stored or shared with anyone, etc.
DO YOU AGREE TO PARTAKE?
[_] YES
[_] NO
Standardised debrief
You need to debrief your participants after they have taken part in your experiment, to limit the chance of deception and other ethical issues. You should explain the full extent of the study and what you wanted to find out.
Thankyou for your participation in this vitally important and psychologically significant study, your results have been for the good of science.. yadayadayada
The purpose of the study was to...
The aim of the study was to...
Then discuss how you have overcome the risk of the following ethical issues:
- Confidentiality
- Anonymity
- Deception
- Right to withdraw
- etc.
Instructions on what the participants had to do, and what the participants actually did.
Please state your e-mail address to recieve your $20 participation fee, however you will not be contacted or your details shared to anyone or have your results linked to your e-mail address... yadayadayada.
Thankyou for your time
The other things I will do another time, I have to get back to Geography revision!
Hope this helps a little but, again I'm not entirely sure myself what is needed for the exam so don't take all of this too literally. If anyone has anything to add to these notes, please let me know.

Re: Psychology AQA A PSYA4 18th June 2012!i think you've got than wrong, you need an average of 90% of the marks over the A2 plus an A at AS to get an A* overall. (correct me if I'm wrong though)(Original post by Mephestic)

So far I've have achieved 92UMS in PSYA1, 99UMS in PSYA2 and 89UMS which equals a total of 280 UMS. -

He got 100 UMS in PSYA3, 273-100 = 173
You need an A at AS, which is 80+80 (or equivalent) in PSYA1 and PSYA2 respectively. Meph must have gained 173 UMS from the two AS units, as 173 exceeds 160, he has an A at AS.
He has 100 UMS in PSYA3, so he would only need 80 UMS for an A* as 90% average of 200 UMS = 180 UMS.
