I'm doing nursing (mental health). I'd love the thought of joining a film club or baking or something. Don't mind a bit of exercise but definitely not the competitive type. I'm not massively shy, but the idea of turning up to a society by myself is rather scary! Maybe I should just man-up(not in the literal sense) and rock up to one. How bad can it be?!
Oh wow, that must be an interesting course. I know how you feel about turning up to something alone, which is why I haven't been to anything I'm tempted by the Union Film Club too and baking would be fun but I haven't seen any related societies?!

Yeah I sent a message in to Union Films about participating and they said to just come to them either an hour before the film or afterwards. I'll probably head into them next weekend

Definetly a good group of people at Union Films. It's actually a department of the Union rather than a Society but has some of the Society aspects. I suppose it ends up being a bit of a cross between socialising and having a job (with plenty of interesting things to do)

As you've been told elsewhere if you want to get involved helping to run the Cinema just turn up around an hour before a film. If you come along on the tueday there's usually some sort of socialising afterwards.

I am of course biased as I'm one of the projectionists there.

Why not We're all in the same city afterall! What are you studying?
    Cool
Studying yacht&powercraft design atm, though I'm not too sure if I will continue... Considering switching course next year to study for maritime officer, back at home =[

Though I must admit that this isn't totally heaven either, most of the people just aren't really my type I guess. Not sure what to do...

what do you study? *it might say somewhere, but then I probably missed it*

Screw it, I'd be open to a meet. PM me if you need reassurance that I'm not a crazy person. :stupid:

    Heyy
As it's nearly semester 2, I thought it was time to make a serious effort to find people who still in the same situation as me.
I've found it difficult to settle in and gel with people as it seems everyone I come across party all the time and get so so drunk. That's really not for me as I wouldn't describe myself as a 'party animal'. I don't mind the occasional night out but when you aren't much of a drinker, clubbing isn't that fun. I'd rather go for a nice meal or to the cinema.
Is anyone else still finding it difficult to meet like minded people?
Glad to know that I'm not the only one who feels like this. Most of the people I know seem to be the 'party animal' type. Personally I don't find clubbing that fun, probably because of the music and the fact that if your sole aim is not to get senselessly drunk everytime you go out you're considered a bore.

I was thinking that it would be a good idea to try and join some societies too, but none particularly stood out for me. I did go along to one of the Union films sessions. I kind of regret not getting more involved with that now.

Anyway, good to see people who feel the same!

If people aren't fancying the societies that are about or don't want to go along we could always meet up via TSR? I don't know maybe its a bit weird but I'm more in a position where I'm looking to meet new people who aren't necessarily just into 'constant clubbing and getting drunk', and it seems as though some of you may be in similar positions?

Cool, I'd have no idea how we would go about trying to organise something though. I guess we could either decide to meet up on campus at the stags or something or meet up and do something inexpensive? Any ideas?

Yeh, the stags would be alright, fairly good place to meet in a group. Maybe one afternoon? Those from the Solent are welcome to join!

Don't you need Soton ID to get into Stags?

I think you only have to show ID in the evening as I never have done during the day and you could be signed in as guest anyway.

Hi! I'm the same. I don't mind going clubbing occasionally and I drink but never enough to get anywhere near being drunk. Like you, I'd rather go to the cinema or for a meal (when I can afford it). It's making me feel pretty isolated especially since one of the people in my halls who I made a vague friendship with has now dropped out.

Hi, you're in a very similar situation to me. It's comforting to know other people are feeling the same and that it's not just me! I don't spend any time with my flatmates, they are mostly Internationals and they aren't Freshers, so I know how you mean about feeling isolated Did you join any societies? I wanted to but nothing really took my fancy. I really enjoy travelling and everything to do with different cultures but I didn't see anything related to that..

Yeah I sometimes feel like that. I don't mind getting drunk but I'm not a huge fan of clubbing. I still do it though. I do wish my flatmates did other activities too like go to the cinema! We occasionally go to the union cinema though.

Ditto. I joined the waterpolo society but didn't stick to it because it clashed with my timetable. I do extracurricular Spanish classes on Avenue campus which is partly due to interest and partly due to spending my 3rd year in Spain.

    I also like travelling

Yeah sure, don't know the best times for people though. Any time this weekend might be a bit short notice, not sure how often people check the thread. If it is the Stags maybe Monday or Tuesday evening or whenever? I know it kinda sounds contradictory to have 'not into constant clubbing and drunk' meet at a pub but if anyone has any better ideas feel free to share.

That's a shame about the waterpolo but I guess you can't help that if your timetable clashes. Learning spanish is cool though! I'm doing a languages degree and have taken up Portuguese this year as an accelerated course.. i wanted to do something extra in the evening but i decided one new language was enough. How's the spanish coming along? And what degree are you taking if you're spending your 3rd year abroad?
