Re: The Revamped TSR Asperger's Society! It depends on your needs.(Original post by nmr1991)
Would i get a free laptop from DSA or not or is it for those with mobility issues or physical disabilities?
I only have a chronic illness (which isn't included for DSA) and the specific learning difficulty (ASD,Aspergers)
Could do with some advice, please:
I have noticed more and more than certain people don't understand me when I speak. I don't have an accent as such, it seems to be an Autism thing.
I am now getting frustrated because I have to constantly repeat myself.
I'm sight impaired; so forms of sign language aren't really an option. Apart from a few people who have non-verbal children due to disabilities, I don't know of anyone who actually knows and understands sign language.
I am now looking into getting something similar to text-to-speech (TTS) to help me. I use a Motorola Xoom tablet. However, at 10.1", it can be a big to carry around.
Anyone know what my options are please? it's not always practical to write everything down. -
Re: The Revamped TSR Asperger's Society! What makes people not understand you? Do you mumble, do your words not come out clearly? Do you struggle saying certain words? Or is it just the tone of you voice?(Original post by OU Student)

Oh and hey guys, i'm new here. I don't have aspergers but I have a lot of experience with people who do have it. -

It's only with a few people - my boss keeps asking me to repeat myself and there were a few incidents last year where a few people didn't understand me. One of these people, I don't understand either. With her it's her accent. (she's from Argentina. Her written and spoken English is fine) -
Re: The Revamped TSR Asperger's Society!I don't think that has anything to do with aspergers. Some people with aspergers speak too loud or too quiet but that's different.(Original post by OU Student)

I actually know how you feel because I used to suffer from the same thing in some of my teenage years. I fixed it by really practicing my speech, it took like 2 years for me to correct it fully. It's probably because you haven't communicated a lot with people in the past or you're shy or something. Anyway what I used to do was just say whatever came to my head and I just to say it. If I said it in a mumbling way or if my words got mixed up I just used to keep saying it until I got it right. I just said random things, I recorded it too sometimes (obviously I only did it when I was alone in my bedroom or something) It just takes a lot of practice to fix your speech. You could take speech lessons if you want. The reason some people understand you and others don't is because some people can't hear quite as well as others. But that doesn't matter because you should fix your speech so everyone can understand you. I know how annoying it is. But just remember to open your mouth wide when speeking and speek up, that's the main issue.
I'm sure it doesn't have anything to do with aspergers though.Last edited by Theoneoranro; 01-06-2012 at 12:10. -

Re: The Revamped TSR Asperger's Society!Yeah but it's not a part of autism, it's because they're shy, which obviously comes from their condition. But it's not actually a part of having aspergers syndrome (I don't think, i'm not sure about it though). The tone of voice has got to do with the condition, but I don't think mumbling has anything to do with it. Plenlty of people have speech problems, it doesn't mean they have aspergers.(Original post by OU Student)

Re: The Revamped TSR Asperger's Society! Can I suggest you actually look up Autism? Some people with Autism have NO speech at all.(Original post by Theoneoranro)

it's sod all to be with being shy.
That is from NAS.Some people with autism may not speak, or have fairly limited speech. -
Re: The Revamped TSR Asperger's Society!
In the past, I wasn't shy, I just didn't want to embarrass myself by talking gibberish. When I want to match the speed of a conversation or how fast they are talking then I try to speak that fast but words come out of my mouth that I just cannot control - therefore I think (actually I know)that it's part of my autism. But nowadays I don't try to match other peoples talking abilities, I just take it slow and easy and less uncontrolled words come out.

Re: The Revamped TSR Asperger's Society!Same. I also don't really have anything that interesting to discuss. Much harder with new people too. I don't do small talk.(Original post by nmr1991)

Re: The Revamped TSR Asperger's Society!I can relate a lot to this post; if something's detailed enough and in general written in a specific way I'll be able to retain it for at least a week in full detail, but verbally I take in very little and when asking for directions etc. I often have to get my phone out and ask them if it's okay if I record them etc.(Original post by Anonymous)
Speaking in terms of academics, it seems that I can only take in information that is in a written format (and not bullet points, but nice descriptions with context and everything). And all sorts of graphs and tables are good, I have a sort of photographic memory. However, everything verbal... I may as well be deaf. Also, I can only take in one kind of information at once and that piece has to be processed before another "layer" can be added. I terms of academics, the complete change in environment has made me go from being the top student in a gifted kids program to having the mental processing power of a turnip.
(I wonder if there could be something else wrong, neurologically? I've had neuropsych tests done and the results were abnormal.)
E.
And since leaving school to go to college I've gone from getting straight A's to E's and D's, initially I assumed it was that the work was more difficult but I honestly feel like the environment inhibits my academic performance etc.
I'm over it now though, I'm just gonna have to find something else to do that isn't so academically focussed.
And this is my first time posting in the thread, I was diagnosed with AS at 11 and semantic pragmatic impairment at around 6 or 7 years old; the latter I personally think suits me better but I guess AS has more awareness.
I used to have social anxieties and had a tough time interacting with people, but in the past year I've had a total change of mindset and I think now people just view the way in which I interact as perhaps a bit eccentric but it's not really a big problem.

Re: The Revamped TSR Asperger's Society!
I am filling out DSA forms because the process is underway for me to return to Uni.
I have been subjected to bullying on here (TSR) since March and I can't cope with it. I have reported it to the Mods when it all started and they threw it out because it was a difference of an opinion. I have been accused of attention seeking when in fact I have made posts out of desperation.
What should I do? I cannot afford a relapse at this crucial time.Last edited by Morgsie; 01-06-2012 at 23:38. -
Re: The Revamped TSR Asperger's Society!I can totally empathise with you here! Especially, the eccentric persona part, because I only received my diagnosis last year and ever since, take criticism about my personality with a pinch of salt. So they can like it or lump it!(Original post by Emor)

Eugh, there is an ignorant tsr thread about aspie people, will link when I get home

Here it is: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show....php?t=2019969

It may be that the 'attention seeking' perception from others is a misuderstanding of words? I know that sometimes, I can be quite literal and straightforward when speaking, which may be deemed rude at times. But, not having the medium to express body language, facial expressions or diction, makes it sound even worse; hence the hostile response.
I think you should raise the matter with the mods once again and remember that you can always PM me for someone to speak to. I totally understand the fear of relapse and I genuinely want to help. I'm sure others on this thread are willing to help too. We're a nice bunch.
Remember, bullying is not acceptable in any form and the fact that you have been subject to it is unfortunate. Bullies are cowards and it's not your fault.
Take care hun.

I can not afford to to self-harm because it will jeopardize my return to university. When this started, I did raise it with the Mods and they aid it was a difference of opinion not bullying. I have been asked to note down the comments including my own and then go to them.Last edited by Morgsie; 02-06-2012 at 20:38. -

Re: The Revamped TSR Asperger's Society! No, Cpdavies has linked it in his post above mine.(Original post by OU Student)
what thread? There's one in mental health about Aspergers. Is it that one?
It is someone who finds someone with AS annoying and has said that all people with AS are annoying.
EDIT: Looks like the thread has been removed.Last edited by Morgsie; 02-06-2012 at 21:14.
