Hey! Do you have Miss Johnson then? So do I. I think the supervisor's college does not impact the college we get? Also, I think it is safe to assume we got our preferred option though it was (so far) not indicated anywhere!
Yeh! I do. Are you coming to Oxford too then?

Yes I'm on the MSt course now. You will definitely be allocated your first choice option, no worries there. I even know a couple of people who switched in the first two weeks and there were no problems. As far as college allocation, there is no link with your supervisor so you could end up anywhere(unless you get a scholarship at your first choice college).
Ahh thanks, that's good to know! I'm not holding out any hope for a scholarship or anything, so unless its the case that students get allocated to colleges that the faculty members are in, I guess I could end up wherever! I'm just dying to find out now...

For what it's worth, I had this same decision to make between the Courtauld and Oxford last year. Despite the Courtauld's leading position in art history, I chose the latter for various reasons (the course was slightly more to my liking, friendly department, etc). I'm very happy with the decision I made, but there are great things to be said for both. There is a big difference between the London and Oxford lifestyle, so do take that into account when making your decisions. Congrats to everyone with offers already!

I'm not in Alastair's module but know others who are, and have had seminars with him. He is a great supervisor, always happy to go the extra mile and super laid back.
Hi, thanks for the information It's really great to know someone who's actually on the course! And I'm just so curious about what the programme is like. Are the courses very intensive and do they cover a wide range of materials? how's the student community/learning environment there? sorry that i just throw these questions at you but i'm really eager to hear people talk more about it and make my decision easier! ...

Miss J ^ has an offer but is still deciding whether to take it up.
I've applied to Brasenose but still waiting for the college offer...Suppose its gonna take a few more weeks? Did you specify a college choice?

Yeh i think it will, i'm just being impatient. I picked Balliol because it looked like it had good scholarships, but i'm not optimistic about that so we'll see. Are you coming straight from undergrad or have you graduated already?

I wouldn't worry about intensity. There's quite a bit of reading each week, as you'd expect, as well as research seminars, presentations and the theory and option classes. There's more freedom as a postgrad, and it helps to be pro-active and organised about your own work as you're a bit more on your own (in a good way). Everyone in my course is great and we socialise much more than I did as an undergrad with other art historians. Do visit the department if you can, Christine and Rachel in the art history office would be happy to show you around I'm sure.

That sounds great! Actually I've decided to go. Won't be able to visit the department though... Thanks anyway! So you'll be graduating from the programme soon?

Hi all, don't know if anyone can help me, but am applying for MA in history of art next term. I'm thinking obviously Oxford, Courtauld and possibly Cambridge. If anyone has been accepted to either of those uni's can you tell me what they expect in results? I know the admission websites say high 2:1, but do in reality do they only look at firsts?

I'm on track for a high 2:1/low first but let myself down doing Italian in 2nd year, so may end up with mid 2:1. Just wondered what my chances are!! I've got loads of work experience tho and have been awarded a research grant, which I suppose helps with the application!

    Thanks x

Hi ruthsshoes, I had offers from Oxford and the Courtauld which both asked for a result in the top third of an upper second class honours (i.e. 67 and above) - I was predicted a first but had high 2:1's in first and second year yet I got in, so I don't think they only look at firsts.

I've just confirmed my place at Oxford - is anyone else doing the Women, Art and Culture in Early Modern Europe special option/is anyone going to Oriel college? So excited!

    Hope everyone's exams went well!

I'm thinking of applying for the MA History of Art at UCL and Courtauld. However, I'm not from an art history background - I'm studying political theory at the moment!

I emailed UCL and Courtauld and both told me I could apply for the PG Diploma but I don't have the money for that and I'm not really interested either.

Is there any chance of getting in without a degree in History of Art?

I applied without a BA in History of Art (I studied Fine Art for BA), I have a confirmed place for the MA History of Art program at the Courtauld this year.

I think not having a background in HoA can put you at a slight disadvantage at first sight, however I believe if you can communicate your enthusiasm for the subject in your personal statement and demonstrate how a background in another academic field can be a strength through your writing sample, it's certainly possible. Possible enough to warrant submitting an application at the very least.

    good luck!

I wasn't sure whether to start a new thread for this question but I was just wondering to any students that have already taken the MA at Courtauld how often you go into the department for classes and study? I'm starting this September and currently looking at housing and train passes etc! I was also wondering what the core course entails? And if you think it's worth keeping my Undergraduate History of Art lecture notes etc. Thanks x
