    21st Century Science GCSE Unit 2 P4P5P6 - Thursday 2nd February 2012
Thread for discussion of this exam next Thursday, good luck everyone who's taking!

This spec is on it's way out, and I think people doing this now will be the last ones (apart from June this year), and I haven't seen any posts about it yet, so is anyone else taking this next tuesday?

    Tues 31st Jan - Bio456
    Wed 1st Feb - Chem456
    Thurs 2nd Feb - Phys456

That's a really horrible way to put them  Do people think that grade boundaries will be lower with them being day-by-day exams? I hope so, these are much harder than unit 1 imo. I scraped an A* last time but doubt I'll do it again.

As I said, is anyone else doing these next week? Do you think the grade boundaries will be lower (especially for Physics) due to how they're (not) spread?

Doing all three exams next week too, as well as a Physics unit one resit on monday

I think its ridiculous, 12 modules worth of work in a week? why?

Well they'll certainly be lower if everyone fails! Well I hope everyone simultaneously fails....other than mee

    This exam was.... TERRIBLEOMGIFAILED.
I hope everyone else found it hard too!! (though if you did well then congrats)
I think there was too much stuff on forces- and not enough on electrical circuits

    Lower. the. grade. boundaries. please.

I opened the exam and felt my stomach drop There were some parts that were okay but I'm not confident in that exam at all.
Hopefully they lower the grade boundaries . I know a lot of people in my classes felt the Physics exam particularly was really hard and that they'd messed it up. I think that my main problem was that I'd revised so much for Biology and Chemistry that I sort of forgot about Physics because it was the last exam.

A little disappointed in my science department actually - well prepared for the Chemistry and Biology exams but the Physics teachers did not show much interest at all. One teacher even told us that there's no point in revising because you'll forget everything before the exam anyway and that it makes no difference if you revise or not!

    Awful.

    Like really bad.

The calculations I just looked at the front for an equation, hoped it was the right one and did it and hoped for the best Not confident at all. The one on friction

The only question I'm confident I got all right was number 2.

I hope they're really low. 27 for an A* again? I hope it's lower than that tbf :P Everyone I've spoken to has said the same thing so.

It's a bit of a shame 'cause for Biology and Chemistry the exams were alright. What I haven't liked is that the questions aren't really straightforward a lot of the time - I actually like it when they give you a 'hard' question (like the cell growth and mitosis question on Biology) and not when they're 'easy', but tricky, if you know what I mean. :L

I think I got something like 5x10 to the 7 (or 50000000) for the electromagnetic spectrum question, which I think is wrong lol.

Question 2 was the easiest there.

Ahhhhhhh The science department apparently only let people retake if they're grade is way below the target grade. My teacher said if someone got a C when they're target was an A they wouldn't let people redo it cus it's a pass.

lol, i really liked the exam, it was soo easy =D, everyone i know says they will fail. Luckily, they are gonna lower the grade boundaries since alot of people are gonna fail badly. all the questions were relatively easy, but the one on turbines i think i did the steps wrong... defo gettin A*

I felt that the formula questions were really hard- particularly the friction question. Initially I put 50000, then I put 5000. I think the first answer was right. xD

Ppl in my school found the chemistry the easiest, and physic the hardest. Biology was ok, except for the kidney machine questiona and the cell growth question, but overall.... all three examswere quite a bit harder than we anticipated but if we had done enough revision.... it would have turned out better! *revises for retakes* xD

    that exam was so hard!
I only knew the answer for like 2 questions.
Hardly anything on waves or electricity it was all about forces!

I cant resit any of these exams, you guys know that the next exams for these are in may and are the last ones, the deadline for entry is end of march but we get results after easter.

Everyone said it was the worst of the three at my school, and I thought so too. The grade boundaries should be very low

That exam was so hard. My mind went blank, and no-one dared open a Physics textbook to check the answers afterwards, we'd all be miserably dissapointed.

Literally, everyone was saying they failed, including me, but when we were all talking about it, not all of my answers were the worst, so i'm hoping I get AT LEAST a C. Thank the lord for coursework!

What did people get for the wind turbine question?
I got something like BADCE? ;/

haha i started with E and ended with C! ;/ what did you put about the question "why the filament bulb glows"? "the construction of a transformer and voltage increase"? and "what does the kinect energy transfer into"?

    I think i got BCDAE^

and the exam wasn't THAT hard. I thought the writing questions were pretty easy and the calculations ones just required a bit of thought, although if you got one wrong, then you'd probably lose all the marks for that question.

My school found it hard too so guessing low grade boundaries

I put it glows because it is transferring heat energy to light energy... Not confident!

I don't remember what I put for why it glows, but I know I did it completely wrong.
For the step-up transformer, I was so stupid, I was about to draw the right diagram but thought it was wrong, so I didn't! So annoyed at myself, aaaaah! It was the diagram with the iron core?

What did people put on the question where it asked you to draw an angle (and it was a total internal reflection), at the bottom where it asked for a number?

And is it amplitude which makes waves interfere?

All of question 2 was good imo, I liked the transformer question even if my diagram was really badly drawn.

For the diagram question, did you HAVE to draw it? Me and a lot of other people didn't draw the diagram. I do remember writing about an iron core though.

I seem to block out all questions of an exam and what I put for answers after I leave the exam hall, I don't know why.

    Re: 21st Century Science GCSE Unit 2 P4P5P6 - Thursday 2nd February 2012
for the writing ones i put:

The filament lamp gloews because it is very hot so it lights up and also this is because moving electrons BUMP into stationary atoms in the wire and it heats te component (resistor up).

I said that when the motor bike slows down it transfers the kinetic energy to heat energy. i said once it slows down it uses is breaks and it turns kinetic energy into sound energy when it brakes. The energy is aso transferred to the surroundings.

The construction of a transformer is that: TWO coils of wire wound onto an IRON core. If their is more coils on the secondary coil rather than the primary coil then the voltage is increased and this is a STEP UP transformer.

Then for the calculations ones i changed the 1.5km into metres so i got 7500/1500 and i got 50 for the friction

For the resultant force i got in momentum i got 20 which was the change i momentum and i divided it by 5seconds so i did 20/5 and i got the force as 4 Newtons

Then for the amount for the power of the bill of the house i got £30

and for the one about the punchbag i got
    TRUE, FALSE, FALSE, TRUE, TRUE

what did you lot get for sme of these questions?

I actually found the Physics the best of the 3 Science exams we've done this week, but I'll freely admit I'm alone in that in my class!

I got pretty much the same as science-oliver!

Aside from the tick boxes. I hadn't a clue, but ticked them all as true, so I figured I'd get maybe one mark- it depends on how it's marked! I literally hadn't a clue!

But yeah, that was one I failed on, the others were mostly okay. I lost a mark on the writing about the motorbike slowing down, I know that, and the last question part b I lost a mark on.. but we're doing okay.
I'm sure I'll find many more marks I dropped soon though!

I think it's totally unreasonable to have them so close together- it made revision a nightmare... I just hope that's reflected in overall performance, and thus the boundaries!!
