I've had all my interviews now and had offers from all I personally thought demontfords facility's were awesome but I was unsure if I liked leicester that much tbh Nottingham Trent was also really nice supposedly De montfords design facility is one of the best. I really don't know which one I prefer I need some help in deciding.

am i a bit late to give advice? lol...
personally i feel, yes, de montforts design facility is probably the best out of all the other unis i have applied for, HOWEVER, i did not like it because of how biased they were for the BA and BSc courses as they have a preference on it. and secondly i was given such a bad impression on my 2nd visit there which made me want to reject them whether they were going to accept me or not.

for nottingham trent, yes i agree that the place is nice, everything is nice. nice basically lol, however i feel that the tutors are probably not going to push you much therefore it would be important to drive yourself forward independently, also i feel that the students work there seem to look very similar which make it seem like students are kind of copying each other but changing it in their own way (sorry if i offend anyone here for saying that but its my opinion). but yea i feel it is lacking a bit of individuality in their work, although i like the sound of the projects they do so think about it.

if you ask me to choose between these 2 unis, nottingham trent it is. i dont personally like leicester much anyway so yea. good luck too!

I had to decide between the two for my insurance (theres a fairly high chance i will end up there!). I went for De Montfort, because I thought that the people were a lot more down to earth, as Lboro, Brunel and Notts Trent are all a bit like "were so good, people will choose us no matter what". Having said that I did put Brunel down as my first choice, I pretty much fell in love with it when I first looked it up!

The De Montfort campus is a 2 min walk from the city centre, and the centre has everything you could possible need. I think the facilities are excellent. In the end i chose De Montfort based solely on the fact that Notts Trent hadn't left me with a particularly strong lasting impression fro the open day, so much to the extent where I cannot really remember what the facilities looked like!

Good luck deciding either way if you haven't done so yet yet!

hehe i chose coventry in the end as my firm
facility wise i am not 100% bothered, since wat i want the most from a university is the teaching, afterall no matter how great a uni's facility is, if the teaching is rubbish then there is no point.

anyhow happy days!

Hey guys, which do you think is the best place to go for product design?
What's the difference between the product design and the industrial design programs, one is more specific?
What's the difference between Product design in the undergrad and postgrad programs?

I'm in my third of applied arts/graphic design and got two more to go. Wanna switch majors to product design but will lose a year, so I want to apply to somewhere entirely new OR take a postgraduate program. Can anyone give me advice here?

ermmm personally im not 100% sure about how to answer your questions but ill try... lol...

uni-wise it varies ALOT - usually for BSc theres brunel, loughborough, etc, as for BA ones it depends

for universities you need to research their facilities (De Montfort being one of the most equipped in the uk i believe)
im not 100% sure about differences between prod. des and industrial - so i think you should research that a bit

ermmm undergrad is mainly a degree for the following: BSc, BA, possibly BEng too but this is like a standard degree for ppl now. postgraduates usually include Masters, then PhD etc.

its a matter of opinions on whether you want to restart an undergraduate course or go straight for masters. i believe that from a masters course you will focus a bit more on the business side especially for management and sustainability.

sry if this makes no sense, but hope i helped lol since no1 ever talks in this thread, sighs...

Hi guys,
I was wondering if anyone applied for Product Design in Scotland?
I am Scottish and just applied for:
Product Design BA at Glasgow School of Art
Architecture at GSA
Product design BA at Edinburgh College of Art
Product design Bsc at Dundee
General Art and Design at Dundee

My first choice is Dundee because it is a Bsc but I'm worried that the course won't leave me with as good career prospects as the more prestigious ECA and GSA courses? I have 5As in my Scottish highers and Dundee only requires BBB.
Any ideas?

Hey  I also applied for product design at GSA and product design at ECA. Got a rejection from Glasgow which I was pretty disappointed about! Have you heard back from all your places? I'm still waiting to hear back from Edinburgh :/ getting nervous! Haha
Hey, I just accepted my offer to study Prouct Design at The Glasgow School Of Art, think they're one of the best places to go, I'm hopefully gonna do the European Masters there. I also had an unconditional for ECA but, as I previously mentioned, chose GSA instead.

Hey guys ;D

Trying to decide between De Montfort, Sheffield hallam and northumbria but don't have a clue where to go! Had my interviews and got offers for them but loved them all and each one has good and bad points..

Any thoughts or anyone going to one of these unis for product design this september?

how about highlighting the goods and bads about each so we can help?
(sorry i hated de montfort so much so i may b a bit biased)

haha okay! how come you hated De Montfort? :P

De Montfort seemed like it was the most serious and professional in my opinion.. like they went into more depth in the introduction to the course when I went for my interview. Also looked like it has good facilities and like it would set me up to be a better designer at the end... but I didn't particularly like Leicester much as a city because I think that i'm someone who would prefer a really vibrant and lively city. Ive also applied for the MDes product design course and that will get me a master's after 4 years which I would prefer.

Sheffield has the big, lively city and all the facilities of De Montfort too, but the one thing really holding me back about that one is the fact that I think product and furniture design are seperated when i'd like to try both in the one course... I have emailed them twice asking about this but i've not had any responses... The course i've applied for here also gets me a master's after 4 years.

Northumbria had an amazing design building, the course looked like great fun and the tutors seemed very friendly and enthusiastic and like they were actually happy to see me and really interested in what I was saying in the interview! But, its hard to get a job in Newcastle i heard...? and the facilities weren't as good, and even though it has a great reputation i'm not sure it looked like the most challenging course... it's also a BA and not an integrated masters which i'd prefer!

Totally torn between them really.,, sorry for the essay haha!

lol dw ive wrote few essays in this thread ;D
btw r u doing a BA or BSc course? lol

anyhow i havent been to sheffield so i dont no, but it sounds great to me
yes i admite de montfort probably has one of the best facilities but i wasnt very keen on it since i personally felt they were a bit biased and seemed to have some preference for their BSc course instead, so i thought i could possibly be slightly neglected for choosing a BA course. in addition i also felt it was a bit too expensive to be there, i mean £9k tuition, n they also want u to pay for your own material which kind of put me off...

from the way it sounds for sheffield... ermmm (reading...) right ermm for those courses, ive so far been to few universities which offer both coruses or joint, therefore usually they are taught together, but course direction may be slightly different since during their project work they would focus on product or furniture or watevr. but dont forget as a product designer, anything is a product which also included furniture, therefore i dont think there is 'risk' in not being about to do furniture design.*

*before hand i was interested in product in furniture design too, but after some thought that furniture is also product so i can always incorporate it in my work somehow, your not the only one!

as for norththumbira... well i think that the reasons for picking a university are mainly for their teaching and facility. i think its different for different people for which they prioritise so yea... for this course i think we should go for facilities more so ermmm yea...

although for me i chose teaching over facility hence y i got coventry (which isnt bad either facility-wise ^_^ )

does this make any sense??? LOL (sry i dont read as i type hehe...)

just to add for de montfort: the interview was ridiculous -.-

I'm doing a BA course! Going to do the MDes though which is like the BA course but with an extra year that gets a masters so hopefully they wouldn't neglect anyone on that course! It is expensive at 9k a year but oh well! most uni's are around that price anyway now :/ and i thought you had to pay for materials at every university?

I do like sheffield a lot, but they have a course called product design and then a seperate one called furniture design so im not sure if you can do furniture on the product course.. but i do get what you're saying when furniture is a product too! they said something about the tutors on the furniture course know more about working with wood so if you want to do furniture you should go on that course, and the tutors on the product course know more about plastics so if you want to specialise in that, go for product... but i like both! don't want to have to choose one or the other, it seems weird that they have done it this way...

I agree we should really choose the uni for facilities which is why i'm probably going for de montfort or sheffield over northumbria, but i did get a nice feeling from the tutors at northumbria and they were so nice in the interview! i felt a bit intimidated at my interview for de montfort... they asked me so many hard questions and i felt like a bit of an idiot with some of my answers haha!! how did your interview at de montfort go?
