GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes Back
Taking the next step in your studies? Here's where to talk about postgraduate study and courses.

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackYou've been a GOG for, like, 5 seconds and PRSOM already(Original post by Chumbaniya)
If I were to summarise what I want in a job in a nice soundbyte, I'd go with "Independence and Impact". I'm never going to have much independence developing communications software to strict international standards and according to the desires of customers, and I'm also never going to make any significant contribution to things that are truly important.
I'm not really the type to be an activist or a campaigner, but I do care a great deal about environmental issues, and as science is my thing I feel like using it in an environmental context would be a good idea. It helps that it's a real growth area on account of the increasing response to global warming and the uptake of alternative energy sources too.

You'll love it. It's a shower of bastards. I just watch Game of Thrones too and loved it.
Love it! When I read that phrase, the first thing that came to mind was "that sounds like a couple of my (female) friends' dating habits".

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackHeard of it but never watched it. I watched the first episode of that Titanic series last weekened and it was thoroughly crap ... by comparison I really enjoyed White Heat. The recent Birdsong adaptation was a bit too flightly but the war stuff was handled very well. But then I always figure that Downton and its ilk aren't aimed at me.(Original post by Craghyrax)
Have you seen Godford Park? I despised that film. I watched the first episode of Downton Abbey and thought 'ugh this is like Gosford Park, take it away'. Then I found out that they have the same director/producer

I stole it off Father Ted:

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackWe lag you a bit...only just finished the last series a couple of weeks ago

Hanging around in quasi-academic cyberspace here is frying my brain. I've just about decided to apply to Harvard as well. Which is impractical for all sorts of reasons, not least that it's a full-time programme which will entail schlepping my family over for a year. Then again, it is Boston ...

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackDo it! Don't know if you don't try... I'm trying to find a valid reason for applying for the AHRC grant to spend up to 6 months in Washington with full scholar rights for the Library of Congress(Original post by sj27)

Guys, seen a study/research training afternoon focusing on writing skills (yay for having the whole of London to chose from for research training
) but it contradicts itself by saying 'students in the process of writing up their research' but yet it's on the list of suitable 1st year research courses. I've established with supervisor that written work often is the best policy for me so would it be worth going?

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes Back
Teapot, why not? Writing as you go along is a good bet, even if you don't use any of it. I really recommend the Dunleavy book on PhD writing too, although he does have an interesting approach to life.
I really want Japanese food. Too much money and effort to go and get some, but I could murder some sushi or teriyaki chicken or something. Or pickled anything.

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackJust found an even better one actually which seems far more suitable, even if it is at UCL(Original post by IlexAquifolium)

Cheers for the recommendation *toddles to amazon*
Haha, on twitter that's known as a first world dilemmaI really want Japanese food. Too much money and effort to go and get some, but I could murder some sushi or teriyaki chicken or something. Or pickled anything.
Actually, I was going to ask you about this, know anyone who's applied? http://www.ahrc.ac.uk/FundingOpportu...fCongress.aspx -
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackI thought one of my colleagues did it but I can't find anything about it on his webpage so maybe I'm going bonkers.(Original post by apotoftea)

Have you thought about applying for Kennedy/Frank Knox too? Not quite the same but might be worth a go. -

Haven't heard of those two? I don't think I'd be allowed to swan off to the States for 6 months because of the collaborative nature of it allHave you thought about applying for Kennedy/Frank Knox too? Not quite the same but might be worth a go.

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackThose are the 12 month scholarships to Harvard/MIT that you do as a year out, so you sign off funding here for the duration. Maybe as you say it's different with a CASE award.(Original post by apotoftea)

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackBiggest question is, how the heck would going to the US help? We can all dream about going an swaning about in Washington D.C. for 6 months but I rather suppose that this scheme is designed for those whose work is more directly comparative (i.e. does the US and Britain) or American in focus. In your case it's no different to wanting to go off to Sweden or France or Germany to look at their records and would have the same qualitative impact on your research question.(Original post by apotoftea)

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackExactly, which is why I mentioned the Kennedy fund - 'that sounds fun' seems to be a far more accepted justification!(Original post by obi_adorno_kenobi)

The friend who I know visited the LoC (maybe through that scheme, I think...) did transatlantic security policy, mostly US-focused. -
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackA year at Harvard would be worth it though surely?(Original post by IlexAquifolium)

And where would I find info on this?
I really don't know to be honest, there's very little separate guidance about issues relating to the collaborative awards. Suppose I could ask? -
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackAlways one to be the downer(Original post by obi_adorno_kenobi)

I'm just thinking out loud and I would love to experience studying in the US. And actually if I wanted to go down a more international route (and I may well be), the LoC has quite a bit of relevant stuff.
But actually - taking a year 'out' to study abroad, as Ilex has mentioned, would be interesting and potentially doing for loads of reasons IMHO. And just found the info online

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackEven still, I'm quite dubious as to its overall value to the research project.(Original post by IlexAquifolium)

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackBugger all - but there was bugger all for mine, and I still made reserve out of 230 applicants, so it is possible...(Original post by obi_adorno_kenobi)
Even still, I'm quite dubious as to its overall value to the research project.
