Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackYes, where is alba??(Original post by Becca)
Law?
(Don't hurt me if I'm wrong
)
You're very mysterious, the only thing I know about you is that you're vegan.
Speaking of vegans, I miss the_alba
I seem to recall...that flying plum has a law degree but is doing something different for MA but still related to the legal side of things. -
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackNot deliberately mysterious! Well, deliberately in my last post is I couldn't resist. But otherwise...well, you all kind of seem to know ech other, and there dint really seem a moment to tell my life story(Original post by Becca)

. But yes, I am a lawyer - I research mental capacity law.
What happened to the alba? Dd she get grown up and leave us?
-
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackThat sounds really interesting!(Original post by flying plum)
I research mental capacity law. -
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackBrilliant!(Original post by The_Lonely_Goatherd)
I had GOGs listening to ABBA songs to help me out for an essay a few months back

Deffo
Not even kidding - I'm listening to a Glee playlist on Youtube right now
I see
You're clearly a secret agent monitoring graduates who may snap at any minute and hatch an evil plan for world domination. (I'm innocent, I tell you
)
Sounds interesting(Original post by sj27)
I'm in academic limbo at the moment - did an MSc economics a while ago, and am currently working. Have become increasingly interested in IR (partly just for interest and partly because I think it's a great complement to economic analysis). Will be applying for the Cambridge MSt in IR for 2013 entry - I'm outside the UK, with a family, so this is really my only UK option (it mirrors the MPhil but is taught part-time in residential blocks). If I don't get into that, well, plan B. Which may be complex and has a number of strands so I'm not going to bore you with that. But obviously, given my current interest, your MA sounds very interesting!
And good luck with your application when it comes round to it!
So will you still have an Econ focus if you're successful with the MSt or will you completely jump over to the IR side of things? Granted there's an overlap in various areas anyway...!
-
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackOooh, that must be a fascinating area of research. I'll have to remember that's your specialty should I ever need advice or legal help(Original post by flying plum)
But yes, I am a lawyer - I research mental capacity law.

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackBut that effectively means the deadline is five years.(Original post by Hylean)
Ah no, I just meant they can take five years and not suffer for it, despite it officially only meant to take one year.
Yes, and you can also procrastinate a lot more and leave the thesis lying for months because you know you've got ridiculous amounts of time, there's no looming deadline that you have to take seriously and no-one is telling you to get on with it.Well, obviously you can't guarantee it, but in five years you can do a lot more thorough research, etc. than you can in one or even two years. How can you divorce the period of time from the mark? You can't and so it's unfair that the thesis is given the same consideration as one done in a far shorter time period.
Don't get me wrong, I can see why you feel it's unfair, but I think you're probably not as disadvantaged by this as you think you are. I bet that on the whole the best theses are still the ones written by people who went about it in an organised manner and did them in roughly the amount of time you're meant to take. -
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackThanks! Yes, there is a lot of overlap and I am already finding that in some of my areas of research (oil, some country risk stuff, of course the Euro debate). Not making any life-changing career decisions until 1. research proposal done; 2. application sent in; 3. nails bitten to the quick during Cam's notoriously long admission decisions process; 4. either accepted or Plan B!(Original post by aeterno)

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackSounds pretty good and good idea with pacing yourself!(Original post by sj27)

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackOooh, where? That's on my life of stuff I'm considering applying for, if I ever manage to get rid of my chronic abulia.(Original post by aeterno)
Hi!
MA in International Peace & Security. My excitement surrounding it has increased considerably since going to a post-offer open day!
How about you?
(Again, I've seen your posts around too but have no idea what you're doing
)

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackKCL(Original post by Anatheme)
Oooh, where? That's on my life of stuff I'm considering applying for, if I ever manage to get rid of my chronic abulia.
They've got a few interesting MA options within their War Studies dept. IPS in particular focuses on both IR and international law (if that interests you most) - pretty much my perfect course that
-
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackHah, yeah, I was looking at their International Conflict Studies, but I think it's too popular for me to get an offer if I applied, so I probably won't bother with KCL(Original post by aeterno)
KCL

I'll just stalk you every now and then to see how your masters is going
-
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackGreat school. They have a distance MA in War in the Modern World which looks fascinating and might be a plan B sub-strand, although I'm not sure my background will be suitable for consideration. And that one would be purely for interest I think unless I did decide to change direction somewhat! As per Anatheme, expect low-level stalking during your MA(Original post by aeterno)

Haha stalk away!
I might occasionally be busy stalking a few profs once I get there though

Good option(Original post by sj27)

You'll get Farrell then
Always worth a shot (esp if you've got any related experience) - as above, nothing to lose! And again, stalk away!

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackWhat's wrong with rain? You OK?(Original post by apotoftea)
*Please don't rain anymore. Please don't rain anymore. Please don't rain anymore.*
And I mean it

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackThere are 4 different road combinations I can use to get to my nearest train station - 3 of those 4 are shut and the one that's open is only passable with care. I really really need to be in London on Thurs
So yeah, if the rain can sod off it would be much appreciated. Ironically, we were one of the few places that didn't have a hosepipe ban in place either
-
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackFingers crossed for you(Original post by apotoftea)
