Ooh, you must! Its a really good one. And it has a cute story about stamps being invented in Discworld. My wedding dress is based on Adorabelle Dearheart's dress in the film.
    I know nothing about Discworld

My girlfriend is a big Pratchett fan. She made me watch the movie for this; was good. Much better than the others.
Yes, it is the best of the filmed Pratchetts. But I would definitely avoid judging Pratchett on those films. The books are a million miles better, not least because of the way in which they are narrated which cannot be reproduced through the medium of film.

I have to be in work early tomorrow, so have I gone to sleep early? No, I'm watching episodes of 30 rock I've already seen 10 times.

This is clearly going to go well.

Oh dear. I decided I needed a break from my wretched chapter, and had a PhD friend round last night to play games and watch films. Only for some reason I got properly drunk. This is only the second time ever that I've gotten to that state. I didn't plan it, I just kind of forgot to stop drinking. Usually things like not wanting to spend money on more drinks, or only having a certain amount in the house cut in before that stage. By rights I should have an insane hangover, but luckily I remembered to take vitamins and to drink 3 litres of water before going to bed, and miraculously I've emerged unscathed. I'm definitely a bit fragile, but nothing like how I usually feel.
I've got a ton of work to do today, so I've been very lucky.

I've been selected to present my work at a PhD colloquium attached to one of the major conferences in my research area. That's quite pleasing, as I made a very last minute application late at night when I was in York for the last conference. I'm glad I finally have a chance to present something without the pressure of preparing a proper paper.

Next week I'm giving my first talk and I've had an email to ask for three lines worth of biography for the chair to say about me and I have no idea what to say. Like do I basically giving my c.v. or do I just elude to what I research or do I actually make things interesting and mention my blog

Cirsium graduated in Biological Sciences from the dark blue place in 2008 winning Not Very Important Prize X for services to Biology. In 2009 she worked in labs X Y and Z at the University of Gert Lush and has been researching for her PhD for the last 2 years.

    Or

Cirsium studied green stuff and fluffy stuff for her undergraduate before specialising in very small biology for her PhD. She is interested in how to feed the world and cancer genetics in this really important crop.

    Or

Cirsium is awesome. And she writes for this cool science mag. And she blogs at Cirsiumsblog.com

    Thoughts?

(Obv all nicely tidied up. I just avoid putting keywords that describe me on internet forums :p:)

While I think the last is the best description of you I think the first two are better for this. Doesn't seem too long to put both in,or maybe first + second sentence of second one?

If space permits I ususally do both - so a brief kind of 'this is my CV' biog before going onto the interesting stuff about what I like doing and how I go about doing it. That sounded a bit wrong, but you get the gist.

Can't you include all of them?

I had 1.5 litres before bed, and drank it very slowly. That's the thing. After getting in after a night out, or after someone leaves early in the morning you just want to sleep. Its making yourself patiently stay up for another 40mins to get as much water into you as possible. I put N-acetyl cystine, choline and taurine into some of the water, and drank Vit C and Vit B. The remaining 1.5 litres I took to bed with me and drank throughout the course of the night. Oh I also had some milk thistle extract before bed for my liver.

Lots of people drink around 3 litres over the course of a day, but it is quite a lot to get into you in the short term. I didn't set a particular goal other than 'as much water as humanly possible', because it really does make a huge difference on helping your body process all that poison quickly.

You are an astonishingly organised drunk person. I ususally consider it a job well done if I manage to get undressed before falling into bed.

Well I was only as drunk as I had ever been to date. I'm pretty sure I've never been as drunk as many people frequently get. I've never thrown up, and I've definitely never woken up unable to remember everything that happened the night before. I never set out to get drunk, and I never drink anything alcoholic which doesn't taste nice. That pretty much rules out shots. If I'm going to drink whiskey, I drink it slowly and savour it. Things like tequila and vodka are just disgusting. If you're drinking alcohol because it tastes nice, rather than for some other reason, you probably buy more expensive drinks and have them more slowly :dontknow:

Also I have quite a high alcohol tolerance :o: At an end of year college feast one year, after something like two glasses of champagne, one of white, and two of red, I proceeded to snaffle up eight glasses of port because there was an unlimited amount of really good stuff available and I really like port. (Again I was motivated to drink a lot because it was tasty). I didn't get noticeably drunk from that, the the astonishment of my friends. My parents allowed me to drink wine with dinner when I was growing up, so I think that gave me a certain level of tolerance.

So yeh... I'd have to strategically plan it, and calculate what I was drinking and spend a lot of money. Which won't ever happen.

There are some really nice tequilas that are like whiskey and can be drunk slowly.

I had a strawberry mojito on Saturday, was lovely!

I think my big problem is that I'm unpredictable, particularly with wine. My worst nights drinking mostly involve white wine (as, ahem, a couple of other people here could tell you) because I'll be feeling quite sober after three glasses or so, have another glass, and then suddenly be completely gone. I also find it interacts with food more than other drinks. Pretty much every other drink I can tolerate well and usually only get tipsy. Wine just really doesn't agree with me which is a shame as it's my favourite!

Ah, that's bad luck. I seem to be better with wine than cider which is my default. I certainly get worse hangovers from cider. I agree with you about the variability and food, though. I don't consistently respond the same way to alcohol. Some days I get tipsy much faster for no apparent reason. Mind you the last time I got as drunk as last night, we had all handed in our last MPhil piece of coursework that morning, and I had done an all nighter as usual, and hadn't actually slept at all. So I think the sleep deprivation made me considerably more susceptible than usual.

Hmm... I tend to like cream based cocktails and not really go in for things like mojitos, or fruity cocktails. I'll try it if the opportunity comes up, though.

Well exactly. Your kidneys can only handle about a litre per hour. More than that and you're beginning to run the risk of water intoxication. I had visions of you downing three litres in one go, but if half of that was over the course of the night I guess it's less risky.

As a youngster I was never hungover because I was so sensible. I have recently begun forcing myself to have a pint of water and toast / sandwich, like I used to when I was in my teens, and suddenly hangovers are a thing of the past again </smug>
