Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackSure thanks.(Original post by apotoftea)
I can scan in my undergraduate and MA reading lists for the above if you want? I did a lot of theory (compared to some) but also have wider lists relating to what you've just asked
Propaganda is alive and well is all I'll say
Thanks, almost at the half way point which is a nice milestone. But it's still dominating the mind at the moment...
-
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackYep. I get to see a fair amount of unexpurgated video which is rather different in character from what's on the TV, and no video comes close to portraying the intense, extended physical and psychological pressures(Original post by apotoftea)

Oh good, so it wasn't just me, then.
Some characters you want to slap harder than others, though.

Hurray! The one person that commented on my facebook status on the same topic (yes, it makes me *that* angry
) claimed that it had won loads of awards and bla bla bla. So did Titanic
I don't mind Robin Williams in it, I guess. He can't save it though. Every time it's on TV I end up getting annoyed and wanting to turn it off, but my bf loves it
I was going to say that I agree with Craggy on the favours thing. But then I read the bit about your fiance's mother(Original post by the_alba)
Thanks, this is reassuring. It's weird, but some of David's family genuinely seem to intensely dislike animals - more so now as some performative reaction to us loving them so much. We have one cat-hater, one dog-hater, and a couple of general animal-dislikers coming to our vegan wedding (which is pretty funny when you think about it). David's mother loudly and very rudely refused to donate (in lieu of gifts) to the charity we chose when she opened our homemade wedding invitation I'd worked so hard on
Though she's just against charities in general, there's no getting through to her.
I think what we'll end up doing is trying to make it appropriate to each person - so the children can all get a (hypothetical) rescued cat, the dog-owning aunts will get a doggy-related cause, and others maybe something more WWF-related; I don't think anyone will actively argue with a bit of money donated to help save the sea turtle or white rhino.
Wow.
Anyway, your compromise sounds really good. Personally, I'd love that kind of favour. My mum adopted a goat for me once

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackOk but those are relatives. They don't count.(Original post by the_alba)

David's family throw a tantrum if you try and give them anything to eat other than steak, roast dinner or ham and eggs. But if people are going to be that difficult and silly I really don't care if they throw a tantrum. -
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackTell me about it! She's the most negative and moany person ever though, and we don't think she knows just how much offense she gives sometimes. It's just her consuming desire for her sons to be all subscription-paying Norms like she is. I can't think of anything we could possibly have done about wedding gifts that wouldn't have ended with a scoffing refusal from her, unless it was to beg her to stay in our house and talk to builders about how best to fix our leaky guttering.(Original post by Becca)

When David's brother and wife told his parents they were having another baby, the response was, 'Oh no! Well, you'd better not be having any more, right?'
Oh btw, did you see the BBC3 doc about the three female weightlifters preparing for the Olympics? I haven't seen it yet but may give it a look, even though it's BBC3.
Yes, the behaviour *is* wrong and should therefore be their problem, not ours. I just hope they'll have the sense not to start mocking us or making a fuss on the actual day. That's really what I'm trying to avoid here!(Original post by Craghyrax)

What is wrong with some people?
Yeah I know about the documentary, was actually trying to find somewhere online that isn't iPlayer as I can't get that here, but no luck so far. Waiting a week or so might make it more of an easy find.
I want it to have a lot of info about weightlifting, but I somehow doubt that...! Will still try to watch it though!Last edited by Becca; 23-07-2012 at 10:52. -
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackSadly yes. I've seen his mother tear up in a pub when she ordered medium rare steak and they got it right. Clearly she didn't actually know what medium rare is, and if any of his family see any sign of moisture in meat (let alone pink) they freak out about food poisoning(Original post by Becca)
Lol is that true?!
By some strange coincidence both of the two contenders for restaurants we chose do food that they like. But if they didn't I would seriously tell them to eat somewhere else.
I don't think they will. But if that did happen people would jut recognise that they are very pathetic and feel sorry for you, and avoid them. You're their offspring, not the other way round. People aren't going to hold you accountable for them. Besides most people have dodgy specimens somewhere in their family.(Original post by the_alba)

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackWow. People are so weird. Fussy eaters are one of my pet hates.(Original post by Craghyrax)

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackOnce my girlfriend and I decided to do a roast dinner so we invited a friend and his girlfriend. Except said friend's girlfriend didn't eat vegetables, Yorkshire pudding, gravy thought potatoes were only ok if they were in wedges, which we couldn't be bothered to do. So she had some roast chicken and managed a few carrots and potatoes.
Personally after three years of university living I'll eat anything as my stomach has the strength of a cast-iron cauldron. -
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackWow...glad you didn't pander to her, though(Original post by Aeschylus)

I'm happy to cook veggie/vegan foods for friends that eat those diets, but no way I'm cooking crap because people don't eat vegetables

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackIt's hard to pander to someone who lives on pizza diet coke and sweets and chocolate...(Original post by Becca)

I actually really like vegetarian/vegan food. Going to university made me realise comparatively my diet was ridiculously healthy. There was a person in my girlfriend's block who only ate rustler's, takeaway curry, pizza, and those chicken dinosaurs with chips washed down with lucozade. We saw him the other month and he's really happy because he's just learned how to cook pasta... -
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackHave you tried the website hidemyass.com? That's what we use to watch iplayer when in Ireland or Italy.(Original post by Becca)

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackA good friend of mine's like that - if it's not microwavable, or processed, or plastic looking etc etc she won't eat it.(Original post by Aeschylus)
It's hard to pander to someone who lives on pizza diet coke and sweets and chocolate...
I was one of the few in halls to cook fresh every day - really surprised me. I'll eat most things I think, certainly far more than I used to and I'm certainly up for trying stuff. But I still loathe anything really creamy/cheesy/pasta related. Think that's my one big thing
And the boy just cannot cope with that.

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes Back
Whereas the Lyceum worked in a good restaurant and trained to be a chef originally before deciding school is awesome....and still thinks pizza is the best thing ever.

Right now..I would happily hurt someone for pizza but since I'm on my own I just can't justify the cost of ingredients.

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackWHY in the name of Jove are you impossible to contact via PM?(Original post by Anatheme)
People call me a fussy eater because I don't like bacon and mushrooms, which happen to be things that people (read students) cook a lot. Just give me a potato and a steak and I'll be happy…
-
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackThat's excellent news. Bravo!(Original post by apotoftea)
I do indeed
Doing long distance currently which isn't ideal but he's worth it
