Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackIf you've got a file that's ready for printing I could do some of them for you. Or do they need to be printed on some kind of special paper?(Original post by Craghyrax)
Ok so I've FINALLY got everything sorted and can now successfully print out the booklets in the right order, but ye gads. That took me all afternoon! And I've only got one successful booklet done next to a HUGE pile of wasted paper and ink. How am I going to find time to do the remaining 75?

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackThat's what it says in the guidelines, I kid you not, whether during term time or holiday. Not that it matters as the issue I've got at the moment apparently doesn't come under that anyway. Here we go: 'Although it is not encouraged by the AHRC, the holder of a full-time studentship may undertake a small amount of other paid work, either in term time or in the vacation, provided that it is compatible with the student’s full-time studies. We recommend that the total demand on the student’s time is not more than six hours a week, and that the RO agrees the commitment'.(Original post by IlexAquifolium)
That really doesn't sound like a lot. The ESRC allow more than that and I think there is leeway if it's tied into the PhD. The stickler with them is that it can't be a full-time permanent job, so if for example there is a temporary overlap of much more than 6 hours a week on a short term contract it's usually OK, particularly since you have holiday entitlement as well.

Is the limit an average of 6 hours/week through the year?
Funny how you can go from loving to hating something to quickly isn't it

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes Back
apotoftea: I'm only allowed 6 hours of work a week and I'm on Uni specific funding.
That's extremely kind of you, but its quite a nightmare to do to be frank. Because I have to manually turn over the pages to print them double sided and the order isn't obvious (after hours of head scratching). My family are visiting and now instead of all of us going into the countryside tomorrow, Dave and my Father are and my Mum will come to the house and keep me company and help with printing, stapling, writing in favours and so forth. So I feel a bit more relaxed! This weekend's really going to be full on with other international guests arriving and wanting to meet me for coffee first. So things are beginning to feel tight.(Original post by hobnob)

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackJust how many pages are there?(Original post by Craghyrax)

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackSorry- I didn't make myself clear. Can you go over 6 hours one week, but compensate by doing less the next such that, provided you total less than 312 hours/year, you comply? That's how we handle our lab demonstrators, who do lots of hours (way over 6/week) in blocks which are only a few weeks long.(Original post by apotoftea)

Hope you get everything sorted in time
I'm not sure to be honest - it doesn't say... Might PM you about the other issue though(Original post by Cora Lindsay)

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackThere are 8 pages in booklet terms but that gets printed on either side of four A4 sheets, and then separate stuff printed on an A4 sheet of card as a jacket.(Original post by hobnob)
Just how many pages are there?

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackIt's not free but in terms of time have you costed up taking them into staples or somewhere and photocopying? they should be able to do double sided to double sided copies and that'd get em all done in half an hour or so and you just have to collate and staple.(Original post by Craghyrax)

Usually it's only 2p a page or something like that (which when you cost up your own paper, ink and time in printing them out isn't too much)? -
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackYeh that doesn't sound too bad. The thing is that they're all colour, and basically I get a very generous printing allowance from Disabled Student Allowance. I suppose I could have just printed the booklets and sent them the receipt but that's a bit risky (because they wouldn't think it connected to my work) whereas I send them receipts for ink cartridges and paper all the time. So its practically free if we do it at home(Original post by PQ)

We assumed a printer might charge us a lot of they worked out it was for our wedding, and because of it being in colour. Its nearly done now... I've done all the booklet jackets now and will start on the inside pages this morning. I agree though that if I realised how time consuming it was I would have started a lot earlier or thought about paying. -
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackHope you had a brilliant time watching the rowing today! Not jealous at all that you got to see three medals being awarded to British rowers!(Original post by Helenia)
Quick question - when you went to Eton Dorney the other day, how long did it take to get through all the security gubbins? Need to plan how early to leave on Saturday (SO EXCITED!)
Having watched so much fabulous rowing over the last week, I am feeling inspired about competing at Peterborough Regatta this weekend with my new rowing club. If I lose my Novice status at Peterborough (possible, this is a fast boat, despite me being in it) in my first race after leaving my old club, that would be satisfying! -
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackThat's a shame(Original post by Becca)
So upset, the 2 lifters I was most looking forward to watching on Monday have pulled out injured
The weightlifting was absolutely AWESOME btw, so you should definitely look forward to Monday regardless. I had so little idea about weightlifting that I didn't know the rules of the competition or anything so I was really surprised by the hugely psychological element there is to it, with having to declare what you're going to lift and upping it and how long to wait before doing your first lift and so on. I was on the edge of my seat, and it was just the B groups of the women's 75kg and men's 85kg! I particularly loved how there seemed to be a mentality of not just lifting what they knew they could lift, but actually going for something just beyond their reach and trying to do it anyway.
We particularly enjoyed the women's actually, because it had the 17 year old from the UAE, who is the first female from the Gulf to qualify for weightlifting and the first female Emirati to ever qualify outright for the games. She lifted about half of what everyone else was lifting, but you could tell that it was a huge achievement for her and it was really inspiring. I really loved the whole session tbh, it was amazing value for £20. -
Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackYeah it's definitely about 1/3 strength, 1/3 technique and 1/3 mind. It's really tactical and tense! One of the reasons I love it, it's so much fun and rewarding trying to overcome the bar mentally.(Original post by Zoedotdot)

I'm sure the men's 105kg will still be really good, but I've spent the last 2 years watching Klokov on YouTube and in championships and was so excited to see him lift live

Its forecast to stormily rain all of Monday. We're not there yet but I want to cry
both of you

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes BackTry to stay optimistic. After all, so many weather forecasts turn out to be woefully inaccurate, especially if they're projecting the weather for several days in advance - so why should this one be correct?(Original post by Craghyrax)

Re: GOGSoc Episode V: The GOG Strikes Back
Yes I'll try.
What an exhausting day. Family here plus loads to do. But I feel a bit more on top of it tonight. I'm just finishing my speech which I've pinned down the worst of. My family got stuck in and formed a production line to fold the pages of the orders of service and staple them. My Mum will pick up envelopes for the favours tomorrow. The Oxfam favours didn't arrive, so I don't know what went on there. A bit upset, but at least the £100 goes to what it was going to go on all along so we're alright.
I had a facial and massage today, though
It was just what the doctor ordered.
Tomorrow I have to wake up at the crack of dawn, go to Cambridge, see all my international friends who are visiting, one after the other. Do the wedding rehearsal. Get back to Norwich late evening. Crash and go back again the next morning for the wedding!
And then I will shut up and stop boring you all.Last edited by Craghyrax; 04-08-2012 at 22:11.
