They probably live on boats in permanent readiness to ship out and escape the immigrants?

I think it's more that they are older people who see the canals as the last true bastion of old England!

    Blimey. Classy place.

In other news I am having an entirely pointless and time-wasting rating war with another boat blogger. She writes the most obnoxious right wing drivel that she thinks is really witty (I read it from an RSS feed, avoiding adding to her hit count...). But despite the dreadful content she always seems to do better than me in terms of number of hits (there's a ranking list). It really shouldn't matter (it really doesn't matter!) but I think it's the right wing obnoxiousness of it that gets me. I'm quite happy with being beaten by *good* blogs. I suppose it just show that there's a lot of boat blog readers out there who are sympathetic to her Daily Mail-esque views.
If it makes you feel better, I love reading your blog, and always click the links that come up in my facebook feed

Thanks but I'm always a few hundred per week behind her, so I've not got a hope really. I suspect that part of it is my readership is probably younger and made up of the kind of people who read using RSS and on mobiles etc so don't actually click though.

It's in my sig, (albeit quite small) : www.nbluckyduck.blogspot.com

And no, the hippie social revolutionary types are only one of the common boater demographics. There are an awful lot of retirees who really do see the canals as the last true bastion of old England, they probably make up one of the larger demographic groups.

As an example, I (and FTB) regularly follow another forum about boats and the canals and when FTB dared to suggest that wearing a white poppy was a reasonable alternative to the standard red one, he was practically lynched for his beliefs!

Edited to add: I'm not going to link to any of the RW blogs on here in case they have Google Analytics and can see where their traffic comes from!

Are multiple hits from the same IP actually counted, though?

Haha, cool. I'm actually really impressed by Milly's blog, she works hard on it. She's going to Bristol Fashion Week on the strength of it.

    Depends on the hit counter

ooh, have fun, and they should be good for that - all the nut protein. Substitute the flour for ground almonds for extra nut power!

Cambridge offer but no AHRC, pretty much resigned to a gap year now anyway.

Yeah I've applied for two, plus might apply for more and there are a few other things flying about. I can't say I'm overly stricken. Well I kind of am, but I'm also deadpan about everything. As long as I have enough books to get me through my gap year I'll be fine I wager.

So does the one that's relevant to you count multiple hits from the same address, then? Because I'm not going to bother clicking the link multiple times if it makes no difference.:p:

This probably won't fill you with delight, but I have to say, I really wish I had take a gap year. I was so shattered by the time I started my PhD that I wasn't very excited about it from the off. A friend of mine buggered off to cornwall and worked as a waitress in a fish bar while she was waiting for funding and she said it was the best thing she ever did.

. Any idea when you will you hear from the colleges re their scholarships? And what will you do with your gap year (if not too nosy to ask)?

Aww sorry you didn't get AHRC funding.

Ilex speaks good advice. Looking back I'm so glad I had two years off. May have wasted most of time selling clothes but it actually made me realise what I wanted to doing/where/long term stuff. Only thing I regret is not going traveling!
