Re: CURRENT YEAR 12s-Hopeful Medics (Mk. II)!
My route into medicine so far
Taken my exams with an overall 2 day revision for all my subjects
.... i have nooo idea why , probably just cuz i didnt get enough time to revise as i was on holiday , yh i know im screwed
btw i might need to retake a chem unit 1 module (you know why) is that possible if u want to do med??
Need to get three good As , good as in 250+ out of 300 in ums terms
I have done no work exp till now , is that bad??
Planning to take a ukcat practice course cuz i am hell scared about it , especially abstract reasoning
and i am planning to try for UCL , Imperial and Kings -
Re: CURRENT YEAR 12s-Hopeful Medics (Mk. II)!Most universities after having quizzed their admissions departments (which are VERY helpful!) do not mind about AS resits providing that you don't resit the entire year. I.E. Spending more than 2 years at Sixth Form/College.(Original post by The Retard)

If you want to do work experience, do something, anything that involves you interacting with people. Doesn't have to be something in a hospital, maybe a library but something that shows you have started to develop the interpersonal skills that you will need to master if you were a doctor working with teams of people and new patients potentially every day. -
Re: CURRENT YEAR 12s-Hopeful Medics (Mk. II)!Get more work experience, volunteer, get a job (to make the first year a bit easier(Original post by Hootie*)
Aww, Thank you! Same to you!
What do you intend to do, if you do take a gap year?
), and probably learn to drive if I haven't done it by then!
And then just generally do stuff which I haven't ever got round to, and if it looks like I still have time maybe travel a bit

Re: CURRENT YEAR 12s-Hopeful Medics (Mk. II)!
Hello Guys
I've just finished my First year medicine at Barts and the London. Got 4 months left till 2nd yr, so if anyone wants any help in their application, my e-mail is momeranwar@hotmail.co.uk,
I initially took a gap yr before getting in, so I know the tricks to smashing the UKCAT, personal statement and interview. This is the 1st time ive been on tsr for a year. I probably won't be bothered to come back.
BUT IF YOU EVER WANT DIRECTION, e-mail me! Cheers. -
Re: CURRENT YEAR 12s-Hopeful Medics (Mk. II)!
Hey all, Im just wondering what you all think about scotttish students only having to apply with Highers, and some who have advanced highers only need BBC. I don't think theres much difference in the level of content as I looked at a past paper and wouldn't say it was super hard. If its just due to the fact English students make up more of the no. of people applying for medicine I'd be annoyed. I'm quite intrigued to know why. If I had known I would have studied in Scotland

a months hospital, and just started some voluntary work, but I'm applying for a deffered entry so I'll have more time to get work experience and voluntary work -
Re: CURRENT YEAR 12s-Hopeful Medics (Mk. II)!whats deffered entry? yea i did the igcse instead, i need to start too some work too , maybe the summer hols is a good starting point?(Original post by AishaTara)

Re: CURRENT YEAR 12s-Hopeful Medics (Mk. II)!Deferred entry is where you apply as if you were entering for the same year but you skip one. Take a year out but with a university place at the end and then don't have to worry about the application process.(Original post by The Retard)

For this year deferred entry you would apply as if you were entering university in 2013 but infact you would start in 2014.Last edited by HarryMWilliams; 31-05-2012 at 11:58. -
Re: CURRENT YEAR 12s-Hopeful Medics (Mk. II)!Like applying this year, but to take a gap year and start the year after.(Original post by The Retard)

Re: CURRENT YEAR 12s-Hopeful Medics (Mk. II)!well apparently it is tougher than gcse, so i got 5 A*s and 2 A and C , yea only 8 subjects(Original post by AishaTara)

Re: CURRENT YEAR 12s-Hopeful Medics (Mk. II)!Although I think the content of A levels is supposed to be more advanced/difficult that Scottish Highers, I think they both end up being just about equal. There are two main reasons I can this of to explain this. Firstly, for courses such as Medicine, we must take 5 subjects. I'm not great at Maths and I really struggled to do well in English, but these subjects are often considered 'strong subjects' and that everybody should study them. I think if I was just studying three subjects that I enjoyed (eg the sciences) my year would have been a lot less stressful. Another thing is we only get one year to learn Highers. Each subject has three units and we sit one exam that covers all units. Also, assuming you don't get an appeal (which seem to be getting rarer these days), if you fail or do badly in a subject, your only option is to resit the entire year in 6th year. However, I don't believe any medical schools accept applicants who have had to resit Highers. So, if you mess up on those exam days and end up achieving AAABB, your choices become very limited. If you get less than AAABB in 5th year, graduate entry would probably be your best option.(Original post by AishaTara)

It's hard to say which system I would have preferred but I think, if you consider everything, Highers and A-Levels are just about equal. -
Re: CURRENT YEAR 12s-Hopeful Medics (Mk. II)!Oh so you're not allowed to repeat the examinations during advanced highers- you'd have to repeat the year, even if its just 1 exam? that totally sucks then! Makes sense I guess(Original post by CocaineSquirrel)
