Explain what is meant by a priori and explain one reason why the a priori is philosophically significant [15 marks]
A priori is the gaining of knowledge without sense experience. If you take a certain premise, the conclusion will be 100% certain and you do not need to experience this to have knowledge. One example of an a priori is that all bachelors are unmarried men, By definition, a bachelor is an unmarried man. Therefore, if we take this premise, it is certain that all bachelors are unmarried men. We do not need to find every bachelor on earth and ask if he is an unmarried man, as it is true by definition- a priori truth.
One reason why a priori is philosophically significant is that it goes against the core values of empiricism. Empiricism is where knowledge is gained from sense experience; however with a priori knowledge we do not need sense experience and so it proves not all knowledge comes from empiricism which is philosophically significant.
