Dear Anonymous
I blame your parents for not allowing you to speak their native Nigerian language, for in doing so they have robbed you of a profound part of your identity. Your culture is your foundation, your roots. It identifies who and what you are and if you look at the world today you will find that by virtue of your race and ethnicity you will never be fully accepted in Western society. I was born British, although not in the UK but have been told many times in my 50 years here that I should go back where I came from. I wish a non -Western language. Your Nigerian culture is rich, with many traditions. I would even advise going to evening classes and even cultivating Nigerian friends as a way of learning their language. The world is shifting and the more strings you have to your bow, the better. Be positive about your ancestry, embrace it. You are called British but you are also Nigerian.
