The Uni Study Thread Mk II
Discussion for current and prospective students about social life at university, societies, what stationery and bedroom items to buy and anything else relating to life as a university student.

I'd think no news is good news and assume that they're still deciding. They'll probably have ruled out some candidates by email earlier in the day.
This was posted from The Student Room's iPhone/iPad App
They said they want the two successful people to start on Monday. My friend is going to work in America for four months and wants me to see her off at the airport at 6am on Sunday, but if I have to work at 9am on Monday I'd rather say goodbye earlier ...

Re: The Uni Study Thread Mk II(Original post by somethingbeautiful)
Personally, if I got no reply at all, after being told that I would within a certain time frame, I'd go into the library the next day and ask what their response is. They sound like they don't have much balls because they won't call the people they don't want, but they will call the people they do want - like they don't have the balls to get that personal when turning someone away. So if it was me, I'd make it harder for their ball lacking personality by seeing them face to face for a response. Either they genuinely forgot/lost your details and so offer you the job or you get turned down but get to watch them squirm.
Reminds me of the time my sister worked a whole day at a restaurant, was told 'we'll get back to you', and they never did. So she called them and they said 'we lost your number, sorry, we won't be offering you the job' which is basically coward speak for 'we're not offering you the job and we didn't fancy calling you to tell you, so instead we're pretending we lost your number'. It happens so much.
That being said - on the scale of zero to cynical I'm pretty much cynical towards employers for being such dicks in the application process. So on balance, maybe call them in the morning just in case they genuinely have lost your details or forgot to get in touch?
The interview went really well, I have worked in a library before and have even been offered a job in that library before, but had to turn it down due to a timetable clash. There were no problems this time around and since they're looking for two people I'm like, what ...
I will call them tomorrow if still no word, I absolutely hate it when they just disappear when they promise they'll contact you
They have two contact numbers and my e-mail FFS!

Re: The Uni Study Thread Mk IIHopefully they just forgot to get in touch. I can totally empathise - it's incredibly frustrating when people treat you that way(Original post by ArcadiaHouse)

Re: The Uni Study Thread Mk IIYes. How do you know?(Original post by Norton1)
Is this the medical library? I would have thought it's highly unlikely they would call very much outside of office hours. Chin up!
I am SO annoyed, they said I'd either get an e-mail or phone call today and I got neither

Re: The Uni Study Thread Mk II24 hour opening libraries in Glasgow. That was the only one I could think of. Sherlock Holmes? Why yes, yes I am.(Original post by ArcadiaHouse)

It's a shame they're being like that, I would say that with a public sector employer it's less likely they're mucking about with you; although I know how frustrating it is waiting on being told about a job. -

Do you think since I never heard back, that means I've been pied?
They said the interviews would be held yesterday but they were held today, maybe they're going to delay the results by a day as well?

Re: The Uni Study Thread Mk IIYour guess is as good as mine I suppose!(Original post by ArcadiaHouse)

Oh and check your junk email/your voicemail to make sure it hasn't gone in there. I don't think that it's likely to have but worth a try. I really strongly doubt they'd not get in touch pretty soon after deciding.Last edited by Norton1; 15-06-2012 at 22:14. -

Re: The Uni Study Thread Mk IIIt very much depends on the weighting of the exam to coursework. Try this(Original post by VanillaTwilight)
Hey guys.. just wondering if someone could double check my average for the year in case I've worked it out wrong haha
Module 1:
Jan exam = 45%
May exam = 65%
Average for module 1 = 55%
Module 2:
Jan exam = 33%
May exam = 64%
Average for module 2 = 48.5%
Module 3:
Jan exam = 45%
May exam = 80%
Average for module 3 = 62.5%
Module 4:
Jan exam = 53%
May exam = 37%
Average for module 4 = 45%
Overall I worked out my average for the whole year by adding each module mark (average of both Jan & May) and dividing it by 4 which I got = 52.75%
Is that correct ??
Thanks so much
Very stupid question I know.. but I just wanted someone else to double check it in case I've done it wrong haha. -
Re: The Uni Study Thread Mk IIIf you've taken all of the weighting into account that should be correct then(Original post by VanillaTwilight)
I've added in all the relevant coursework weightings etc. It is so confusing the way my uni does it haha.
How did your exams go anyway, fellow chemist
?

Exams..wel some were ok, some were **** and one was really quite good (out of 7). Literally finished them 2 days ago though, not stopped since then with catching up on things, trying to tackle the mammoth task of cleaning the house and been working. Just been sent home from work now luckily though so I can get some sleep!
How's everything with you?

Re: The Uni Study Thread Mk IIDon't have the attitude that you can sail through everything like you did in first year and expect to get the same marks. Make sure you actually assimilate and learn the lecture material as you go, don't leave it until exams like you might have done before. Also, it depends on what subject you do. For sciences you generally don't need to worry about doing too much extra reading to be honest so don't panic about that. If you're a humanity you definitely want to keep up on your reading as much as possible. Also, expect more coursework so plan your time carefully and don't leave everything til the last minute. (But, being a student something's going to be last minute! Just make sure it's not the 100% of the module, 15 page essay yes?!). Basically, as long as you're aware that you need to work harder to maintain your grades you're going to do fine!(Original post by thesilvermagnolia)
I've just finished my first year (68%
). Does anyone have any advice about keeping on top of things in second year? I've heard it is a big step up! Thanks

Re: The Uni Study Thread Mk IIIt is a huge step up but 2nd - 3rd year is much easier.(Original post by thesilvermagnolia)

Advice do post lecture reading for each lecture. If you haven't got one then get a wall planner they are amazing mine's still up I havent the heart to get it down but you can use it to manage exams and coursework in advance.
