Help with a few questions about Sussex
I'm helping out at the Univerity of Sussex stall at an Education Fair we are having in Sri Lanka in early March. I have been asked to answer the following FAQs and have them with me cos its what loads of ppl ask apparently!

I'd appreciate it if some of the current students (or applicants) can help me with answers for these... (the ones that are crossed out are the ones I have answers to!)

    Why Sussex?
How much will it all cost?
What is the International Undergraduate quota, (If any)?
What is the cost of living compared to the rest of England?

    Are there any scholarships available?
    Do you offer Industrial Placements?
What is the minimum IELTS/TOFEL score required?
Is there a deadline for applications?
Can I work while I'm living in UK? (Part-time work)
Do they offer any on-campus jobs?
How far is it from London?

    Do you offer MBA programmes?
How do I travel to the university from the airport?

    Thanks in advance!

What is the International Undergraduate quota, (If any)?
    25%

What is the cost of living compared to the rest of England?
Not as bad as London, but still a bit higher than average.

Do they offer any on-campus jobs?
    Yes. See: http://www.sussex.ac.uk/cdec/

How far is it from London?
90 km / 50 miles / around an hour by train

    Do you offer MBA programmes?
Yes. Well, one. And it's kind of tied into Entrepreneurship / Sci & Tech Policy Research...

How do I travel to the university from the airport?
Gatwick? Train from Gatwick to Brighton. Train from Brighton to Falmer. 5 min walk from Falmer station to University.

Could someone help me out with these final few (or tell me where to look):

    Do you offer Industrial Placements?
Do you offer MBA programmes? (where can I get details about the MBA?)
How do I travel to the university from the airport? (if you accept it as your firm choice does the uni arrange for you to be picked up?)

Depends on what airport you arrive at, really! I'll assume Gatwick, as it's the nearest to the university. If you'll probably arrive at a different airport, post again saying which one.
Gatwick Airport rail station is right next to (I think) the South Terminal. at any rate, it's easy to get to. Get a Southern or Thameslink train southbound to Brighton. If you're on the right train, it'll be the last stop, so not too confusing. A single costs about £8, the journey is about half an hour.
From the station, if I had all me stuff with me, I'd get a taxi to campus. There's a taxi rank just outside, and almost all the taxis have green and white markings, so you know you're getting into a licenced cab! Not sure how much it'll cost you, to be honest, but it's quicker and easier than the packed buses, and this way you can be dropped off as close to your flat as possible. If the driver's feeling kind enough, he or she might even help you take your stuff inside

As for your bit in brackets, not happening. If they picked up everyone from the airport, it'd cost them crazy money.

This isn't for me! lol. I'm supposed to be writing a FAQ for the Uni of Sussex for some Education Fair we are having in Sri Lanka. The question about the airport is for ppl who are coming to Sussex in October.

They'll probably arrive at Heathrow cos there are no direct flights to Gatwick from Colombo. Whats the best way to get to Brighton from there? First they'll have to get to Paddington from Heathrow then proably take a taxi to Victoria Station (they'll probably have loads of luggage). From there a train to Brighton and then on to Falmer? Any route more direct than this? The tube will also be messy considering luggage and stuff, otherwise they could take to tube direct to Victoria.

about the courses i think it'd be best if you have a browse around the universtiy web page and see for yourself? i'm sure there is relevant information there.

as for getting from airport to uni... gatwick is certainly the best option because its closest and there is direct transport. however the journey from stanstead by train is complicated as you have to take the underground in london etc. a lot of hassle. i suggest that you advise new students to buy a coach ticket online, and take the coach... when taking all the other tickets you must buy into accunt (train, train, subway, train) it's not actually that much more expensive...
it's easier than trying to figure out the london subway and public transport on your first day

Thats a good suggestion! The only problem is the timing. How often do coaches leave to Brighton from Heathrow or Gatwick, any idea?

Yeah it sure will be! And they'll probably be jet-lagged as well so it won't be too fun!

    Thanks for your help rarely_may!

Can the University not provide the answers for this if you're helping them out?

I'm supposed to have this list ready to make it easier on the day. These questions are apparently the most frequently asked. The delegate from the university is really busy cos there are so many ppl asking questions. If I can answer a few of the easy ones, then it makes it easier for them!

Everyone was asked to make a list of FAQs like this. There are like 50 unis coming and this happens every February or March in Colombo...
