How do you hold your pen?

How do you hold your pen?Random, I know...
But I'm always getting told I hold my pen totally wrong. I hold it exactly like this:
When apparantly normal people hold their pens like this:
(Way over-rated I think)
Anyone else do this and should I try and hold it the 'proper' way?

Re: How do you hold your pen?I'm left-handed and hold it reallllllly awkwardly, and my wrist bends in a lot. Everyone tells me I look strange and that it looks painful the way I told my pen!

Well is it possible to actually change the way you hold it? Because I actually find that if I write for a long time it hurts... just wondering if anyone has managed to change how they hold their pen?

Re: How do you hold your pen?I used to hold it the way you hold yours and my handwriting was appalling. When I was 10 I completely changed the way I hold my pen (it's not like the second photo though) and it's now much more comfortable and, more importantly, legible! But the most important thing is for you to be comfortable and able to write fairly quickly.

My pen rests against the top edge of my middle finger, that is why have a fat bump of hard skin there now (one of the joys of being an English student). -

Re: How do you hold your pen?I hold my pen with the three middle fingers on the side of the pen that's furthest from me, with the pinkie and thumb closer. People say it's weird, but it works. I find I don't write as quickly as others though and my hand can start to hurt after a while. I've been trying to write "normally", but my handwriting is terrible and it's just feeling awkward.
