'This is the world I wanted to see, no East, no West, no Cold War. And the irony of it is, the United States and the Soviet Union are spending billions on their space programs and the missile race only to arrive at the same conclusion. In the 21st century everyone will be able to see that we are all just inhabitants of a little celestial body called Earth. A world without communism and capitalism... that is the world I wanted to see. But reality continued to betray me.'

    And a more serious one:

"We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Arabia. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here."

"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars"- Oscar Wilde
Is it supposed to be a good or bad thing that some of us are looking at the stars? Because it's Oscar Wilde, I'm reading a wry edge to this quotation.

    Still awesome though!

"In it is supreme tranquillity. The sea does not belong to despots. Upon its surface men can still exercise unjust laws, fight, tear one another to pieces, and be carried away with terrestrial horrors. But at thirty feet below its level, their reign ceases, their influence is quenched, and their power disappears." - Jules Verne, "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea." At the moment, it's

"One shivers slightly, looking up there.
The hardness and the brightness and the plain
Far-reaching singleness of that wide stare

Is a reminder of the strength and pain
Of being young; that it can't come again,
But is for others undiminished somewhere." (From Philip Larkin's 'Sad Steps')

    BRRRR! Shivers indeed!
I really like the first lines from Larkin's This Be The Verse, although that may just be because it's so useful in everyday life:
"They f*** you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do."

"They f*** you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do."
"But they were f***ed up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats
Who half the time were soppy stern
And half at one another's throats

Man hands on misery to man
It deepens like a coastal shelf
Get out as early as you can
And don't have any kids yourself."

not sure if I've missed a verse there but yeah, it's awesome. And quite true.

His poetry is awesome in general! Not sure I'd've wanted to meet him though.

"Who wants to be happy? Anyone can do that." - Bob Dylan

"You can't win an argument just by being right!" - Barry, Four Loins

OKOK I'm just getting negged for these so I will explain them.

The top one: When you are down (as we all are periodically) I find it really really helps me focus on work instead of self misery if I just think **** it, I am going to achieve something with my life, If I make the world a better place that is far more important than my own personal happiness. And it helps me pull through. For me, this quote sums that up.

The second one I just find really funny, Four Lions is an amazing film XD I know too many people that seem to go through life with this attitude and it makes me chuckle.
