I've entirely self taught myself... I started in December 2010, so it's been like a year and a bit and I can play Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix, The Ocean by Led Zeppelin and stuff like that.
I just googled tabs and watched covers on YouTube until I could play it. It helps if you really like a band or a song because then there's just so much motivation to learn it. I personally love Led Zep so I'm slowly trying to learn Jimmy Page's songs. 
Everything is on the internet; you really don't need any books. Good luck!!!
With a budget of £60 what guitar could I buy? I heard 6 strings is best.
