Re: 2012 Subject Choice Thread!
Hi, got columns out today, applying to do AH Spanish at a college, and doing H RMPS and H Admin at school.(Well, to start, I'll drop Admin if i have to) But I have a connundrum: AH French or H Psychology?
Why French? I love languages, I've done French before, I want to apply to study Spanish so having French too would be useful, I don't want to give French up
Why not French? It'll mean doing two language AHs, one of them open learning, which will be a lot of work. I have a love/hate relationship with French already. Also, I'm not fantastic at it and got a low B for prelim
Why Psychology? It seems really interesting, also it's another Higher which is good as I get the impression that unis would prefer good Highers than average AHs?
Why not Psychology? I've never done it before so I don't know how much I will enjoy it or how good at it I will be. Also, it's a bit irrelevant to what I want to study later in life
Advice needed? Anyone done either? Even better, anyone done two language AHs? Thank you

Re: 2012 Subject Choice Thread!I took similar subjects this year:(Original post by rawragee)
got our straw polls today, oooh exciting stuff (for me anyway
)
hopefully I'll be taking:
AH Maths
AH Chemistry
AH Physics
H Human Biology
I think I'm being a bit ambitious but hey ho!
AH Maths
AH Chemistry
AH Biology
H Physics
In my opinion, it's perfectly doable, and not too difficult. But if I were to pass on some advice is that you have to keep on top of work, do not take this lightly. I never followed this advice and always said 'oh, well, the work can wait.' But now this past week has been prelim season and I've been stressing out like mad about it. I cannot reiterate enough how much falling behind will come back to bite you in the arse. -
Re: 2012 Subject Choice Thread!I am determined to be organised next year! I got the same advice this year and man, I regret not listening to it. I can only dread to imagine what it'll be like next year if I don't keep up to date(Original post by Hype en Ecosse)
I took similar subjects this year:
AH Maths
AH Chemistry
AH Biology
H Physics

I will definitely, definitely, try to keep up - think I might write your advice up and post it on my wall for reminders

Re: 2012 Subject Choice Thread! My school (*cough* new headteacher) also invented a new rule :/(Original post by without_glasses)
My school has some stupid new rule that in 6th year we have to take 5 subjects :s
We are not allowed to crash any highers at all!! Also our columns are so weird that many pupils had to choose subjects that they hate, because they can't choose anything else! -
Re: 2012 Subject Choice Thread! That's pretty strange, in fact, from what I've seen, people who crash Highers at my school tend to do really well in comparison to many of the people who done standard grade.(Original post by Nessie162)

Can I ask what school it is? (It's just that I seen you're in North Lanarkshire and I'm wondering if it's one nearby mine.) -

As far as I'm concerned this rule only applies for choosing subjects for 5th year.
I think we can crash highers in 6th year. But still.
Also in 3rd, 4th & 5th year (not sure about 6th) we're not allowed to study all 3 sciences, which is quite a problem for me as I need them for Uni. Looks like I'll have to beg them :P Hope they'll make an exception for me.

Re: 2012 Subject Choice Thread!I'm also thinking of doing this, how'd you think its gonna be?(Original post by Kerrias)
Finally decided on:
AH French, AH Spanish, H RMPS and crashing H Modies.... -
Re: 2012 Subject Choice Thread!I got an A at Int 2 in fourth year and I loved it. It was so interesting. And I was quite gutted that the columns didn't let me take it this year, I think that its going to be really writey (if you know what I mean :P) but I'm quite excited, my school does Belief and Science, Christianity and this year was Medical Ethics though it changes year by year depending which teacher takes the class, and it sounds fascinating. What are you thinking?(Original post by animelover123)

Re: 2012 Subject Choice Thread!I have no prior knowledge to RMPS whatsoever, but i am very interested in it. We do the same Topics, i think ,except for World Religons we do Buudihism, and Mortality in the modern world.I think its gonna be brilliant, people who are doing it this year are giving very positive feedback.(Original post by Kerrias)

Re: 2012 Subject Choice Thread!Any idea what you want to do after school?(Original post by tasha96)
Chosen my highers for 5th year.
The columns worked for me but not for most others, so assuming they don't get changed (and I pass the standard grades
)...
H English
H Maths
H Physics
H Chemistry
H Biology -

Re: 2012 Subject Choice Thread! Thanks for the advice!(Original post by Hype en Ecosse)
Perhaps pick up a humanity or language in 6th year, then? Whenever I hear a word out a dean of admission's mouth they're shouting about how they want you to be a 'rounded individual'.
I do want to continue German or modern studies in sixth year.
And two of my extra-curriculary things are related to those- one a language and one a quite modern studies thing- so I'm hoping that that might work in my favour a bit if I don't have the option of picking one of them up next year!
