AQA A2 English Language B - Language Investigation 2011-12So, over this next week I need to decide what I want to base my language investigation on.. but I'm completely clueless atm. I'm pretty sure that I don't want to do anything CLA-related, drifting towards language change - but the scope is so wide that I have no idea where to begin.
Does anyone have any ideas for topics? Or if you've already done this at A2, what would you advise?
Thank you! -

Re: AQA A2 English Language B - Language Investigation 2011-12exactly! and it's gotta be something we'll stay interested in for the next 4 months, big decision and not long to make it!(Original post by rayyychel)
I'm exactly the same!
I was thinking that perhaps I could do something related to gender differences but all my ideas are either to simple or too complex.
Bah! >

I'm planning on doing something r.e. changing rhetoric in public speeches (shall be analysing Chamberlain and Bush's respective declarations of war, I think). I've got a draft in for the media text tomorrow, and am yet to do anything. Hmm.

You're right about it being something you have to care about enough to do for the next 3-4 months. I've been looking at what moderators and examiners suggest, so how about:
something that annoys you about language use - (innit; rising intonation in a statement yeah?; using "ghetto slang" when you live in Norfolk; particularly sexist language; the language of "funny" comedians who mock disabled people for cheap gags; PC-gone-mad...you get the idea).
or
something that you really like about language use ("and I was like, and she was like"; the inventiveness of slang and Multicultural London English; interesting alternatives to sexist language; the language of comedians who are better than Gervais and Boyle..etc).
More ideas on here too. -

Re: AQA A2 English Language B - Language Investigation 2011-12Quite a few centres do ENGB3/ENGA3 exam units in Jan and then coursework units after.(Original post by thompsonic7)
How come your schools are starting so late? Our completed draft- from hypothesis to conclusion- is due in next Friday! -
Re: AQA A2 English Language B - Language Investigation 2011-12Aaah I see, I always assumed that coursework deadlines were the same across all centres.(Original post by merkatron)

Re: AQA A2 English Language B - Language Investigation 2011-12woww! well in my college we've done the exam first, then doing the coursework from jan-may and then finish, i'm guessing lots of other colleges have done it the other way around. Early finish for us though, win.(Original post by thompsonic7)

Re: AQA A2 English Language B - Language Investigation 2011-12that's a good idea too, thank you(Original post by rayyychel)
or you could always challenge the ideas of a theorist; for example i'm seeing if Pilkington's theory that men and women have different conversational styles still applies :P

Re: AQA A2 English Language B - Language Investigation 2011-12
Can anyone help me?? I'm analysing 4 different reports on Jimmy Savile sex abuse scandal. Two are tabloid and two are broadsheet, I can see clear differences regarding their political affiliations (The Sun and The Times have the blame more on the BBC than Savile - obviously none back up his behavior). But I'm struggling on what PARTICULAR linguistic features I can pick up on, analyse and comment on at the moment I am describing and generalizing too much! Someone please help me out

I found mine so hard to analyse...I ended up looking at: Abstract nouns, adjectives (evaluative, descriptive etc - very good for quantitive data), emotive language, pronoun use and bias spin. It sounds a lot easier than it is to actually analyse newspaper reports..not to mention time consuming! Hope you get/got on a bit better than I did
