Hi, guys. Can you please, please - begging - help me out with psychology here? We've practically had to teach ourselves the entire syllabus and I'm getting nowhere. Although I can remember a few things, it's not enough. Do any of you have any revision notes that would help me? Please??
    Which topics are you doing?

Would be good if biological explanations of aggression come up. There is so much good ao2 which could be used!

If I was a betting man I would say that is quite likely.

for sleep I recommend revising bio rhythms and lifespan changes in sleep.

relationship is quite likely to be sexual selection I think as last year was models and this takes an evolutionary approach which is what they have been keen to push since last spec change.

be sure to post what the questions are after as I'm keen to see how close my guesses are.

for a genetic question on aggression - what on earth do you include?

an essay about testosterone? MAOA? adoption/twin studies? animal studies? I'm so confused on what to put in it

Thanks I'm glad you kind of agree :-) I spent the day revising biological rhythms and lifespan changes yesterday! Now doing biological exps of agg.

    Good luck with psya4!

I've started by focusing on twin/adoption studies. Miles and Carey did a meta analysis which would be a good study to use as they found they genetics account for upto 50% of aggression. But then you can evaluate this by saying how it's only part of an explanation, therefore reductionism, nature v nurture etc.

I've then gone on to say about MAOA and how this enzyme facilitates the breakdown of excess neurochemicals and other amines. And therefore MAOA deficiency would lead to high levels of neuradrenaline which would cause agg. Then there was a study by Cases et al involving mice. So you could use that.

All the synoptic issues come in too.

To be honest I don't think it's necessary to talk about testosterone too. We only have 30 mins so talking about MAOA and adoption twin studies would probs be enough

Would anyone be willing to look and give me feedback on an aggression essay regarding neural/hormonal mechanisms?

I've just realized that I actually have very little research regarding neural/hormonal explanations of aggression. My essay is just focusing on testosterone and appears to be only about a typed page long. Any other ideas?

Edit** I misread your post and thought you said genes.

Hormones = serotonin, dopamine and testosterone generally. I think Cortisol may be brought in also perhaps.

How many pieces of research do you all have per topic? Like for sexual selection in relationships for example?
We don't need to know dates of research do we? Just names?

discuss identical twins, family studies and adoption studies and evaluate their use.

e.g twin studies show high concordance rates but it could just as easily be due to psychological factors as they share same environments.
however concordance rates are not 100% suggesting diathesis stress relationship and a combination of both.

family studies also show high rates of aggression but again easily explained through learnt behaviour rather than a gene for such.

again with adoption studies-could show higher aggression due to being adopted, problems this causes, also disrupted attachments due to being adopted etc.

    how's that

i dont think thats correct because neural/hormonal mechanisms include :serotonin, dopamine, testosterone + cortisol

you have discussed genetic factors[U]this is a completely different topic.[/] genetic factors include twin/adoption studies, MAOA and a gene responsible for violent crime

Dates..the examiners wont care unless you say something about temporal validity..then you may have to. Have to add names in me thinks.
Research varies between topics. e.g for sleep disorders-narcolepsy- you may have 3+ studies in your essay.

So roughly 3 is enough for each, unless you happen to have more for the odd topic?

    Thanks
