Should smoking in the street and outdoors be banned?
I don't know what you think, but should smoking outdoors, in the street, etc, be banned?
If you go to a busy town or city centre in the daytime, you will be surrounded by smokers. As people can't smoke indoors, everyone goes out into the street to smoke, meaning town and city centres are more filled up with smokers than ever.
How many times have you been walking down the street and had someone walking in front of you light up a cig and them waft a cloud of smoke behind them, forcing you to breathe it in? How many times have you walked outside a shop, only to find a group of smokers standing outside and then having to hold your nose as you walk through? How many times have you stood at a bus stop and some inconsiderate twerp has lit up, forcing you to breathe their smoke?
So should it be banned in the streets and other public places, and a rule brought in that people can't smoke within 15 metres of a building exit? Town/city centre wardens could be hired to police this, and anyone caught would be approached, told off, and given a 50 pound on the spot fine.

So people should be allowed to smoke so long as they are by themselves, in a box, with no social contact whatsoever. Great.
You do know that although you can smell smoke outside, the effects of passive smoking are dramatically reduced in an outdoor space.Last edited by Electronica; 01-02-2012 at 15:28. -
Re: Should smoking in the street and outdoors be banned?Everyone that drives should only run their cars where there are no people. I'm sick of breathing in the fumes of cars as they drive by. It's horrible, especially older cars.(Original post by super_dooper)

My point is that everyone has a gripe for one thing or another. banning it is not the answer. If you want smokers to not smoke outside - help them quit rather than banning them from anywhere but their own home. That won't work at all. -
Re: Should smoking in the street and outdoors be banned?
The passive smoke is so little that it's unlikely to have a drastic effect on your health.
I'm not a smoker, but really it isn't a big deal having people smoke in the street. It goes away really fast, it's not like indoors where the smoke hangs around. -

Well by this rationale i'm proposing to ban fish markets, they smell and the fish are inconsiderate for being dead and smelly in busy town or city centre in the daytime.
but seriously, shutuppa your face -

WHy isn't it made illegal (along with alcohol) as it will save the NHS millions each year as nobody will be killing themselves :/

Re: Should smoking in the street and outdoors be banned?
I dont smoke, but I don't think you should ban smoking outside. You might as well ban smoking all together if you do that. Its a lifestlye choice, if someone wants to smoke let them. I'm not saying its pleasant when you walk past someone and they breathe smoke all over you but if its bothering you then move, walk away from it.
Or the simple solution is don't go outside...

Re: Should smoking in the street and outdoors be banned?
You're hardly 'surrounded' by smokers when you go out into a street or town centre. In terms of being near someone 'inconsiderate' who's lit up, it's perfectly possible to either move away from them or ask them politely if they wouldn't mind not breathing it in your direction. I've never seen either method fail.
Perhaps being an ex-smoker means I have a certain affinity with the smoker, but I think talk of banning smoking in the street is fairly ridiculous. Passive smoking just isn't a factor outside, and the smell is hardly a sufficient reason to ban it. -
Re: Should smoking in the street and outdoors be banned? You sound like a bundle of fun. Maybe you don't understand but people enjoy drinking and smoking even though they are aware of the detrimental health effects. If we went by your reasoning surely many sports would be banned because there is a potential to get hurt.(Original post by knowledge.messiah)

Re: Should smoking in the street and outdoors be banned? It would save the NHS a lot of money, but if you ban tobacco and alcohol, a lot a tax revenue would be lost, so the taxpayer would need to pay more.(Original post by knowledge.messiah)

Besides, the prohibition-era in America just goes to show that banning alcohol will never have it's desired effects. -
Re: Should smoking in the street and outdoors be banned?
I were walking down the street with someone smoking in front of me earlier, it didn't really bother me that much.
IMO people should be able to smoke outside wherever they want.
also smoking and alcohol cost the NHS millions a year, but how much tax is the government getting from smoking and alcohol?Last edited by mattamz; 01-02-2012 at 15:46.
