Re: The “I’m looking for a job” thread - questions & information here
So if it's just a local shop, would it be rude to go in and ask if there's any jobs available, seeing as they don't advertise on websites etc.? On the other hand, would it be stupid to have a 10 minute conversation about nothing before eventually getting round to asking about vacancies?
IDK if it's just me, but I find it really awkward to just walk into a shop and ask if they have any jobs - any way to overcome this? :-) -
Tempting. What do you do?(Original post by dreamgirlbrigette)
work online, thats what i do, the hours are flexible and you need is a computer

My rugby coach works for an agency that does factory work, so I almost had a shift there straight away today.
I've had an interview for Halfords, have a 'recruitment event' for ASDA next week and have applied other places.
All in all a promising week.

Re: Getting a job before uniHey there. This sounds great - can I ask what agency you're with? & how did you make the first contact?(Original post by siani-chan)
The best way I found to earn some money was through agency work. I've now got experience behind the bar (although they won't let you do this until you're 18), waitressing, kitchen porter and factory work (just packing boxes and things. nothing too bad). Not glamorous, but a few 12 hour shifts here and there and it's worth it in the end! Also it means that when you want to apply for a job later on (or at least in my case) you'll have the experience already
The agency I'm with are really flexible and they're always offering me work - even when I come home at Christmas and other holiday periods. The pay is fairly decent too.

Re: Getting a job before uniSorry have been ridiculously busy this week (as well as watching too much tour de france...)(Original post by litost)
Hey there. This sounds great - can I ask what agency you're with? & how did you make the first contact?
I'm with JM Recruitment (they're based in Kent.) I used to be with J&J (was looking for jobs on the internet and came across them, decided to pop in and they sorted me out with work all last summer so it was worth it.
I ended up with JM as while I was working for J&J I met a girl on a shift, and she said her dad owned JM. She asked if I wanted to switch, as they've got a specific contract with the cricket club where I was working so I was more likely to get more shifts.
I imagine that different agencies have different recruitment processes (such as numeracy tests or whatever) but mine just literally wanted to see my cv and passport and other documents and it was fine from there. They just asked me what sort of work I was looking for and called me up whenever they had work. -
Re: The “I’m looking for a job” thread - questions & information here
Ok so, I have basically no money and need a job to build some funds for when I start uni, but alas, I've no job experience to my name and really haven't a clue what to do. I've looked online, but there is nothing online in my area I'm qualified to do, or have the necessary prior experience the job requires.
My mum has suggested knocking up a CV and giving it in to this hotel just over the road; it would be perfect if I could work there, but I just don't know what to put on a CV that would even give me a chance.
Things I can think of are:
- Education - GCSE results, AS results (what about A2 results? I haven't got them yet, obviously, and won't until 16th August at which point it's too late). Would it be appropriate to mention something about university (firm choice, etc.)?
- Lived abroad for several years, been to an international school, met people from lots of different cultures as a result
- Got onto the JP Morgan schools programme last summer, have a place at a similar RBS thing this year
I mean, I don't need an expert to tell me that the above is inadequate for anything, but what can I do to enhance it or add to it? The sorts of jobs I'd be going for will have to be stuff like waitering, or bar tending, or working at McDonalds or something, and I don't want to put down loads of academic stuff and give the impression I'm a total science geek (regardless of whether I actually am or not
).
And one more thing: how do people get jobs at fast food places and so on? I can't find anything online... do you just walk in with a CV and give it to somebody and hope for the best?
Ah, help meh!Last edited by Astronomical; 23-07-2012 at 18:46. -
Re: Taking CV into store?prepare a cv, address it to the manager and hand it in to your local store/cafe/ wherever it is you want to work. if its starbucks or costa or a chain theyre likely to have an application form so look on their website for those.(Original post by Deziah)
This is going to sound so stupid, but do you mean the managers name or just 'the manager'? If so, the job vacancy doesn't say the managers name. D;
Sorry for being annoying, haha.
"just wondering if i could hand in my cv" etc. 99.9% of the time you dont hear back.Last edited by MrHappy_J; 13-08-2012 at 13:12. -
Re: The “I’m looking for a job” thread - questions & information hereIt might be, as you'll be taking more paid holiday than most jobs allow- they might not have a problem with it if it's unpaid leave.(Original post by kaisa131)
Is it hard to find a part-time job if I want to go home for the vacations (1 month in winter and 1 month in spring)? -
Re: The “I’m looking for a job” thread - questions & information here
Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I need some with regards ti references.
I'm applying for a role as casual learning consultant at my old college, but with no previous employment history, I have to list two of my most recent teachers. The problem is, I haven't asked them if I could do so and have no means of contacting them with the dealine in under a weeks time
Should I just list their names anyway? Thanks. -
Re: The “I’m looking for a job” thread - questions & information here
hi everyone,
i didnt want to clutter up the forum, so i thought id post in here.
In the next few weeks I'm gonna go on the job search, once i find my timetable for school and know what i can do etc etc.
what should i wear when i go like in and out of the places asking and handing over CVs? -
Re: The “I’m looking for a job” thread - questions & information hereNothing too formal, nothing too casual. Just look nice. Look clean and well-presented, but if you roll up in a tux they'll think you're a nutjob.(Original post by monstersam)

Re: The “I’m looking for a job” thread - questions & information here
hey, didn't think it was worth making a new thread for this as hopefully its a simple question with a simple answer. If I'm looking for a job in my university town if I get one will I have to take in my p60 from my home town job, given that I havn't quit so won't have a P45. Because er I don't actually have one, I wasn't here in April and when I came back it was never mentioned.
