Anyone wanna help with Geog 4A!
YES! So stuck with this exam I've got my script back but just don't know how to improve. I feel if the same questions came up again, i'd write the same thing! Do you have any general tips, for section B too? Would be greatly appreciated!

Haha oh god I wrote about land they'd cleared to ensure that they could have a good firing range from their concrete walls and I elaborated on that a bit and couldn't think of anything else :| For the separatism one I wrote about language barriers/religion/ethnicity/culture/location it's just all the stuff that was in the book I thought. I didn't really want to do this question to be honest but out of the ones I had left after choosing my essay and first question I had to do it
ahh that sounds good to me, i'm sure you've done fine! My mind just went blank Other classmates said they talked about how the barrier constructed by the Israelis cuts into the Palestinian's farmland, which I failed to mention! I really didn't want to answer this, feel i'd have had a better chance at answering a section that I didn't cover in class tbh! I was pleased a retail essay for world cities came up though, although i'm now worried i've answered my ideal question rather than the one asked :L Which essay did you do?

I don't have a clue what the paper is on this time so I can't really help with any specifics, sorry. In January it was on regeneration in Poole, so I read up on similar flagship regeneration projects and mentioned their success in comparison to the pre-release. Whatever the key issue is, try to get a case study of something similar.
here are 5 topics in the book, i'm unsure which to focus on :/

Perhaps the exam in January was better suited to it, as I said I don't know what this one is about. Just try to incorporate wider knowledge , it will differentiate you from other candidates.

So what areas would you advise we talk about synoptically? Climate change? Environmental sustainability?
    Thanks, are the questions long?

I got 88% in GEOG4B in January, synopticity is the real key to that paper. The pre-release alone is not enough, you need to read around it, you need to read about similar things, you need to really understand the pre-release not just reword it in the questions.
what do you mean by 'similar things'?

For example, the paper in January was about Poole and the problems it would have concerning the residential areas and the bridge.

One thing I did was I fired up google maps, had a look at the general area and then recognised there were quite a few schools near the area. This meant that congestion was prone at busy times... It's little nuggets of knowledge like these which could make the difference

yeah I wrote that farmers might have trouble accessing their land...kind of similar. I guess we just won't have a clue until august! Section 1 I did plates section 2 conflicts and for the essay I did climate about the ITCZ and anticyclones...don't even know hoe it's possible to get 40 marks to be honest!

I did but i kind of wish i picked the world cities one now and did the short dg answer, how do you feel?
I thought it was ok. I talked about BRICs and the reason why they are growing for about 1.5 pages then I talked a bit about the 1997 south east asian financial crises and how the asian tigers have significantly recovered.

    GEOGB ADVICE NEEDED

My teacher wrote a mock, and one of the questions was "Explain how a variety of physical and human features combine to make the himalayas a fragile environment". It was focused I think on item 2, and worth 15 marks - what would you write?

this may sound like a really silly question, but would you recommend reading the pre-release again when we get into the exam, or just launching straight into the paper? cos i'd imagine just before the exam i'll be re-reading my notes to refresh my memory? (this pre-release is pretty long - 12 pages in all) thanks!

IIRC the exam is tight for time (not as bad as GEOG3 but still tight) so rereading it would just be a waste of time IMO. Preparation is key to this exam, you get a pre-release for a reason so you really have to know it well enough to be able to answer questions without reading it, only using it to maybe affirm your point of view. Read through it just before to remind you, but if you want to do well you should have already read it multiple times and annotated it and starting thinking of potential questions. You can't blag this exam, people tend to do poorly on it (hence the low boundaries) and I think the reasons for this are a. lack of preparation, and b. lack of synopticity (it's called the synoptic paper for a reason).

Apologies, meant 4A, but this advice may work: make up some questions which may appear, look up some stuff related to those questions and answer the questions, using the looked-up material.
