Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012Whoops, thanks. Will go edit.(Original post by stevop21)
Nice explanation!
It's the other way round mate, high-pressure anti cyclone gives clear skies and low pressure depression gives cloudy days

For anybody struggling to grasp plate tectonics etc, or if you want more detail, look at the Khan Academy.

Lots of videos (some quite advanced) on plate tectonics. Helped me understand Rift Valleys so much :> -
Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012Thanks for the explanation, I think I understand it now! +rep(Original post by HotfireLegend)
Sure. It's not that complicated if you 'remove' the irrelevant detail and only have what you need to know written down on a diagram.
http://www.newmediastudio.org/DataDi...inds_fig01.jpg (for example)
The Hadley Cells take the warm air from the equator (since warm air rises) and deposit it 30 degrees north and south of the equator. This causes low pressure at the equator and high pressure at 30 degrees north and south.
The air is cold by the time it reaches the ferrel cells, so it just sorts of 'glides along' (however you wanna describe it) close to the Earth without rising. When it meets the air from the polar cells which is even colder though, the warmer air from the ferrel cells rises, heats up the air from the polar cells and also causes that to rise. (Causes low pressure, since the air rises)
At 90 degrees North and South, the air is coldest so the air falls again, creating high pressure. The process repeats.
The specific thing I don't know is how each of the air from the cells 'know' where to rise and fall, but I think it's at the midpoint of where the warm meets the cold air.
But I do know that the air at the equator originally gets warm due to the amount of sun present, and it is cold at the polar cells due to the lack of sunlight.
Low-pressure zones = cloudy days
High-pressure zones = sunny, cloudless days
Here's another good visual diagram to help:

Hope that helped
It's not as bad as Psychology, trust me!

Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012Thank you for this, it's really useful! Wish they did the Weather topic too!(Original post by acedlol)

Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012Yah :>> He could be good for other topics too, like conflict. http://www.khanacademy.org/humanitie...n-war-overview(Original post by emelizabeth)
Thank you for this, it's really useful! Wish they did the Weather topic too!
Not much on development at all
, but you could certainly borrow stuff from the economics if you have time. A weather one would be rather lovely :3

Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012Practise writing loads in a very short space of time!(Original post by Imsocrazy)
How is everyone revising for this exam , its so long , has anyone got any tips for the 40 markers , would be greatly appreciated ?

Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012Here you go.(Original post by acedlol)
I'm trying to find the Jan2012 paper but cant find it anywhere?
I'm sure I've seen it before.

Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012It was a low grade boundary for an A*, 62/90 I think? Reason? Tectonics essay. Nightmare(Original post by acedlol)
THANK YOU
Cant believe that paper though. Would have loved that
.
Plate tectonic questions easy :< (8 marks on seismic waves so easy)
Weather questions bit tricky :/, same with development, :/. Wouldn't know which one to pick here.
Conflict essay is a winner.

68% Raw? A*? I stand a chance!
I haven't started revising yet, but that's only really because I've got two proper subjects - Geography and Psychology. (Other is ICT) so I'm not panicking about ICT at all. I'll start reading up some Geography/Psych eventually! -
Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012Would it be possible to have a look at your weather notes, I would be so grateful(Original post by myyrh)
Hi guys
I did A2 AQA Geography last year and have tons of resources (Case studies, notes) on the following topics
Weather
Tectonics
World cities

Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012Brilliant resources attached there, many thanks.(Original post by myyrh)

Weather
Tectonics
World cities
Here's some stuff to help you prepare for the dreaded 40 marker.
Would be awesome if you could share some of those notes somehow (doing the exact topics you studied).
Also, if anybody could clear up the 'synoptic' side of the 40 mark'er that would be great. I here you can only get a maximum of 19 marks if you aren't 'synoptic'! -
Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012I used these Powerpoints for Weather and Climate(Original post by d_aan)

Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012
Also I used these Mind maps for each topic within Weather and Climate and Tectonics. I found them amazingly useful in condensing the stuff you need to learn in preparation for the exam.
Again if you guys need any further stuff (case studies or otherwise) I'll try and dig it out for you

Does anyone know anygood revision guides/sites for World cities, conflict, ecosystems and tectonics? Can't seem to find any
