Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012
Hi all, I just found this thread. I'm doing Plate Tectonics, World Cities, Globalisation & Development. Finished WC a while back and now almost done Globalisation & Tectonics. Really not looking forward to the exam though, like everyone else, the 40 markers are killer. :/

Hi guys
I did A2 AQA Geography last year and have tons of resources (Case studies, notes) on the following topics
Weather
Tectonics
World cities
Here's some stuff to help you prepare for the dreaded 40 marker.
World Cities notes, please?
Thread moved too fast.
*Goes to read*
For paper 3, I need about 75% in UMS to get the A*. What did you guys get in UMS % for Paper 3 when you took it? (If you did)Last edited by HotfireLegend; 14-04-2012 at 00:20. -
Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012I got 84%(Original post by HotfireLegend)

I might as well upload my World cities case studies

Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012180/200 UMS at A2 is 90% or A*, right? Unit 4 was worth 80 UMS and Unit 3 is out of 120 UMS.(Original post by HotfireLegend)

So average 90% is about 72/80 UMS and 108/120 UMS.
For Paper 4B I got 78/80 UMS, which means 180-78= 102UMS I need for A* on paper 3.
Do I need to get 102/120 UMS to get the A* then? If my midnight maths is right, thats about 85% UMS?

Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012I got something like 68 UMS in paper 4, or 83% UMS.(Original post by d_aan)

Midnight maths indeed! I'm the worst at Maths that I know though, but my guess is yes. Turn it into RAW for a better idea of how much you need. I need 75% raw. -
Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012Yep. Your midnight maths is spot on(Original post by d_aan)

I got something like 68 UMS in paper 4, or 83% UMS.

How do I turn it into raw? my brain has turned into mush.
Its a long shot but does anybody know what rawk mark was needed to get 85% UMS.
I think I just asked the same question to both of you in two completely different ways... I was about to go to sleep but I got too excited thinking about geography
EDIT:
Found out that last year 66/90 raw marks gave you A* or 73%. I still have no clue on how to find out the equivalent in UMSLast edited by d_aan; 14-04-2012 at 00:41. -
Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012I'm revising Geography right now if that's any consolation!(Original post by d_aan)

Here's the converter:
http://web.aqa.org.uk/UMS/
Believe it or not, 85% ums is 58/90 in raw marks. 64%.
(The cap is 70/90 in raw, at 120 UMS)
I need 67/90 approx, lol.Last edited by HotfireLegend; 14-04-2012 at 00:43. -

If I need 102 UMS to reach 180UMS altogether, basing it on june 2011 I'd need 62 marks/90 marks or 69% raw. That seems okay I guess, bit confusing but i'm sure I'll absorb it in the morning.
What topic are you currently indulging into at this ungodly hour
?

Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 201240 apparently. Here's an actual candidate's essay from the June 2010 paper which recieved 40/40.(Original post by HotfireLegend)
Thank you!
By the way, that example tectonics 40 mark question - how many marks did it get?
The question (It's not on the uploaded essay)
“The hazards presented by volcanic and seismic events have the greatest impact on the world’s poorest people.”
To what extent do you agree with this view? -
Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012Introducing myself to World Cities - I want to finish my ICT course within the next 4 weeks (hopefully) then I can blitz on ahead with Geography and Psychology. Aiming for that A* in Geography. What makes me curious though is that my papers for paper 4 were marked at 90% raw, and when I did the paper in the exam, it was 83% ums... (something like 60 ish% raw...) - Any ideas how that could have happened?(Original post by d_aan)

To be honest, it's not something I'd grade 40/40 (or I may just be being a grammar picky person, but thanks. (Subjectivity coming into play I wonder? I fear this in the final exam for the reason stated in reply to the post above yours!)(Original post by myyrh)

Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012Well I wouldn't rule out dodgy marking. For GEOG1 I got 110/140 UMS. Decided to remark it and it went up to 126/140 UMS(Original post by HotfireLegend)

I guess you'll just have to hope you have a good examiner!

Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012World Cities looks like a fun topic to do. Unfortunately i'm stuck with Development at the moment. It's not as glamourous as say the Conflict unit. Although, I'm still reading through the global warming part of the weather unit in my textbook...it makes me so drowsy.(Original post by HotfireLegend)

Same here! Are you feeling confident of getting it? Hmm that does seem a bit weird.. Surely the UMS should always be higher than the RAW percentage? So did you get 60 or 90% raw - sorry for the confusion, i'll probably have the right answer in the morning

Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012Had paper 4 remarked. Stayed the same(Original post by myyrh)

Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012Yes, that's the conclusion I came to after the remark. It just battles me how I can drop 20-30% from my teacher marking it to the examiner marking it. The remark thus shows the teacher marked too generously, doesn't it?(Original post by myyrh)
Since the remark is apparently done by a senior examiner, I doubt it's mistake
Perhaps you just genuinely didn't do as well as you thought you did? Besides you know how wishy washy GEOG4 is. Hopefully you'll destroy the one coming up and claim your rightful A*

Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 201260% ish raw, a difference of 30% from the teacher's 90% marking.(Original post by d_aan)

I wish I was doing Weather and Conflict actually! Globalisation's very boring (for me) and Conflict seems fun and comparitively easy compared to Glob. I've wabted the Weather topic because I'm more of a physical than human geographer. World Cities just expands more on Globalisation, but there's less stuff about companies and more about population (from AS) so I guess it's better. -
Re: A2 AQA Geography 3A Summer 2012Looks that way to me unfortunately(Original post by HotfireLegend)

No need to dwell on it though
Just do your best in the upcoming one and try not to expect amazingly high UMS. I know it sounds weird but In the stuff I'm not confident with I usually do the best in
So maybe it may work for you
This case study is excellent and it's very synoptic too.
Its a long shot but does anybody know what rawk mark was needed to get 85% UMS.
