Though with Fermat he didn't tell everyone he had a proof and never gave it. That comment was in notes of unpublished work. It was a note to himself.

It was a comment in the margin of his copy of Diophantus' Arithmetica wasn't it? I know he had a few jottings in that book along those lines anyway!
