Re: Current Year 11 Thread Mark IIIMO, 9 GSCEs is just fine.(Original post by Koolio)
Guys, should I drop French? If I did I would have 9 GCSE Subjects left. I've already dropped Music because I hated it and quite frankly rubbish at it as well. So I need some opinions. Would dropping 2 GCSE's make me look incompetent? Is 9 GCSE's enough? ( and believe me I am much more confident about the other subjects and know I'll get good strong passes ) -

Ooh, good luck! I thought we had a really hard paper this time, but it couldn't have been too bad! 4 people in my year got full marks.
Um, I would say read the poems to death. Honestly, my anthology is so battered and bruised... because the anthology section should be the easiest to score highly on, as you know what's coming up!
Try and do lots of practice essays and get your teacher to mark them. The first question in the paper will be on an unseen poem, so that is actually quite hard to revise for, but basically be able to use and recognize language devices naturally, and then hopefully you'll be able to spot them. To be honest, you only really need to be able to talk about 3 or 4 devices per poem, but *really* talk about them.
Hope that's helpful!
OOO thank you it is definitely helpful.
For the anthology questions, is it generally the same question, but just for different poems for each year?
If so, then I'll just analyse the life out of the poems before hand and just use the same analysis in the actual exam.
As for the unseen poem, I am fairly decent at noticing language devices and explaining them, so hopefully that won't be too much of a task and hopefully I'll be able to score highly like you did!
You done Unit 1 or Unit 3 yet? -
Re: Current Year 11 Thread Mark IIPretty much, the first question is just asking you to comment on a theme in the poem (usually it is very vague, and just 'love'), and then the second question will ask you to compare how a theme is presented in two poems from the anthology, or one poem they give you and then you choose the second one.(Original post by thisisjokes)

Looking at the past papers will help too - there's not many though!
Unit 1 is the novels unit right? I did the exam last summer but I have to retake it in June because otherwise I won't get the terminal requirement.
We've done our first controlled assessment for Unit 3, on Romeo and Juliet. We're doing the A View From A Bridge writeup after Easter.
I hope I've got those units right...

Re: Current Year 11 Thread Mark IIYeah you did get the units right aha! We did our Shakespeare text as Romeo and Juliet too, and we're doing the write up for An Inspector Calls very soon (next two weeks actually) and then starting poetry.(Original post by Paramore<3)

Unit one is the novels and I sat the exam in Jan, and got an A which I was unreasonably unhappy with. Wanted an A* as I want to study A Level English. I think I'm going to re-take in the summer though...
You done any of the English Language units?

Re: Current Year 11 Thread Mark II
Gosh! I cant wait to start Sixth Form. I've been at my current school for about 8 years and so I already have a kinda "set reputation". So, when i go to sixth form I get to have a fresh start and all that
. What's everyones top choices? Mines are Henrietta and Latymer

Re: Current Year 11 Thread Mark IIAh, really, what was your question? We did it on a comparison on Lady Capulet in the film and text.(Original post by thisisjokes)

I think that's the order we should have done it in!! Grr... what novels did you do for unit 1?
Yup, did the English Today controlled assessment (I think that's unit 1?) and then the unit 2 exam last summer - got an A in that, I think I have to retake it anyway as well... we're writing up our speaking and listening controlled assessment now, and then we have our oral the week before we leave for Easter.
So much work!

Re: Current Year 11 Thread Mark IIWho are you talking to, lol?(Original post by pseudonymegg)
i would continue to study French, it puts you ahead of people who don't have a language GCSE/A Level -
Re: Current Year 11 Thread Mark IIReally? Ours was a comparison of Friar Lawrence in the film and in the text.(Original post by Paramore<3)

So much work!

For unit one we did George Orwell's Animal Farm for Section A and Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men for Section B.
Ah I remember English Today! I did that at the beginning of Year 10! Our school did it so we complete all of English Language in Year 10 and then all of English Literature in Year 11. We did the unit 2 exam last summer too, did quite well on that so it ensured I got an A* overall which I was really happy with
Trying to get the same for Literature is proving to be quite the task though, and I always thought I was better at Lit :/ -
