University of Malta Medicine
Discussion of individual medical schools and their courses for applicants and current students. Not for all those 'Am I Good Enough' questions.

Re: University of Malta MedicineHey Malta hopefuls, there's very little info u can get from here so better go check out this FB page which is really helpful because u can ask questions from students already studying there from the UK and other Malta applicants from here..Hope it would help!(Original post by gradapplicant)
you are very fortunate, are u in touch with any other candidates that you know have also got interviews, there are very few people on this forum who have mentioned any thing about them getting an interview?
Good luck with your applications.

Re: University of Malta Medicine(Original post by Abbieastoria)
hi there, i missed the April deadline but when i rang up, the lady told me that you can apply until mid June as long as you have the following...
Biology A2
Chemistry A2
humanities or a language to AS or A2
are fluent in English
go through British exam boards such as AQA, OCR, Edexcel etc...
So can you have a humanity subject at A2 (apparently psychology counts yay
) without having the language at AS? Or would I have to clarify with the university?

I would clarify with the university. I was told that you need both.(Original post by LittleMisssPipedream)

I can't seem to find an email address specifically for the med school or am I just being stupid? Guess I'll most likely be doing an AS language this year. I'd really appreciate people filling me in on life there once you guys start in october
This is definitely an option for me!

There;s no phone for the the med school I call the admissions office and call the local office. If you get no answer then call the international office and they should put you through -
Re: University of Malta Medicine
I've been checking the UoM website for information regarding their requirments and so on.... and i found this:
http://www.um.edu.mt/__data/assets/p...ver29May12.pdf
scroll to page 12 and it says:
There are 2 Requirements for Doctor of Medicine and Surgery
" (A) Passes in the Matriculation Certificate Examination at Advanced Level at Grade B or better
in Biology and Chemistry; and
(B) A pass in the Matriculation Certificate Examination at Intermediate Level at Grade B or
better in any one of the following subjects: Accounting, Applied Mathematics
(Mechanics), Arabic, Computing, Economics, Engineering Drawing and Graphical
Communication, English, French, Geography, German, Greek, History,
Information Technology, Italian, Latin, Maltese, Philosophy, Physics, Pure
Mathematics, Religious Knowledge, Russian, Sociology and Spanish. "
I guess that means that the subjects listed in (B) are the Humanities subjects?
in that case it is not strictly restricted to just languages.
I might apply next year, but I would be interested in finding out how one could get registered with GMC in the UK or go work in the US?
as it is an MD degree, it might be easier to work in the US rather than the UK? -
Does anyone know if I were to get say AAC rather than BBB with a C in chemistry, whether I would still have any chance of getting in? and if I got these grades would I even be able to apply next year but to sit the entrance exam or would they instantly reject a reapplicant

Re: University of Malta MedicineFinally, do we have to have a fourth AS?(Original post by Acidian)
Good luck all you guys.
Just to maybe answer a few questions or give some perspective.
The medicine course in Malta has been admitting increasing number of students recently. In Oct 2010 it was around 130, in Oct 2011 it was 150 (not exact numbers). There is also an increasing number of foreigners (although a number of them are from Kuwait, since the Maltese government has an agreement of sorts). I hear the first 2 years of medical school have become more competitive.
As for living options are
1) University residence
2) A flat in Msida, walking distance from university. These would be privately owned.
3) A flat somewhere else, maybe a bit cheaper but then you would need to use public transport/buy a vehicle
I think monthly costs would be around around €500-600 basics including rent (but it really depends on what you go for).
Whilst English is accepted you guys should still be aware that throughout the last 3 years of the course, from 3rd year on wards, you shall be in contact with Maltese patients. A good majority of patients have a basic understanding of English, but you will find others who do not speak English. Apart from this most conversations between doctors and patients will take place in Maltese. This is not something that should discourage you but should be kept in mind.
If you have any particular questions ask away.
I am a medical student currently at the UoM. The only potential problem is that a good bulk of the syllabus has/is being changed and I might not be able to answer certain questions because of this. -
Re: University of Malta Medicine
I have just heard about Malta university, I was thinking of going to the medical school in Castellon de la plana in valencia spain which teaches in english but with the 20,000 euro fees every year its a bit expensive for me! I live in New Zealand so we don't do A-Levels or gcse. we do NCEA. I saw somewhere that there was no tuiton fees for EU students, is this true because I am a EU citizen. What is it like living in malta is it cheap? Thanks

Re: University of Malta Medicine
I have been in Malta this week looking at the Uni and it IS free for UK (and EU) students! Courses for medicine are taught in English, especially as there are very few technical words in the Maltese language, so it's impossible to teach in Maltese. The only thing that costs is accommodation and things like books etc..
Maltese is not a requirement, although it's quite useful to study as an extracurricular subject because some patients do prefer speaking in Maltese but this is not often a problem (I had the honour of spending a morning with the top psychiatrist in Malta who works with UK Universities as well. I also met an F1 and an F2 from England and Ireland who spoke no Maltese and they said it was fine).
The only problem is entry requirements as the UK A Levels don't allow us to do all the subjects they require (unless you do IB in the UK).
General requirements are the subjects that anyone who wants to study any course at the University of Malta must have. For UK A Levels, these must be attained at grade E AS Level.
Group 1- a language
Group 2 - a humanity
Group 3 - a science/maths
Group 4 - an art (be careful as it seemed the only AS subject I could do that was art, drama etc.. was Computing becuase our Home Economics and ICT courses don't cover what they require here!).
You can pick more than one subject from each group, but people must have at least one.
THEN, there's the course specific requirements which are Biology, Chemistry and a third A Level all at grade B or above. These aren't the issue, but people may struggle with the general requirements as it's very difficult for us to take a minimum of 6 AS Levels and fit it into our timetable at school.
You can either take the AS subjects that you don't have after year 13 (or during if you want to teach yourself as you only need grade E), or you can do one year of medicine in a recognised UK University, and then drop out and transfer to Malta. You would have to start from year 1 again, but you will be at an incredible advantage!
Good luck guys <3 -
Re: University of Malta MedicineIs it possible to apply as a postgraduate without those a-levels that you list here, and instead rely on having already attained a degree?(Original post by Weasle)

Re: University of Malta MedicineTbh it depends on what the degree is. They said you are allowed to transfer after a year in uni studying medicine or another science-medicine related course, so if you have done a science degree then I don't see why you can't apply as a postgrad, but that is something I would email them to check about for sure!(Original post by happyhands)

Re: University of Malta Medicine
To anyone that can help...
Are there limited spaces for medicine students at university of malta? i hear dentistry is limited to 6 students or something ?
Are late applications accepted ? how competative is ? how many apps per place?
I am looking to apply with the following;
A2: Chem-A, Bio-B, Maths-A, Electronics -A
If they dont accept a late application then ill be applying in the final year of a chemical engineering degree, maybe 2.1
will my application be competative? do they require academic references ? will i have to do an interview or entrance exam as i read some you guys havent had to.
I appreciate any help/advice you can offer me.
