University of Malta Medicine
Discussion of individual medical schools and their courses for applicants and current students. Not for all those 'Am I Good Enough' questions.

Re: University of Malta Medicinehi, could you please help me with my question above? thanks(Original post by Weasle)
I have been in Malta this week looking at the Uni and it IS free for UK (and EU) students! Courses for medicine are taught in English, especially as there are very few technical words in the Maltese language, so it's impossible to teach in Maltese. The only thing that costs is accommodation and things like books etc..
Maltese is not a requirement, although it's quite useful to study as an extracurricular subject because some patients do prefer speaking in Maltese but this is not often a problem (I had the honour of spending a morning with the top psychiatrist in Malta who works with UK Universities as well. I also met an F1 and an F2 from England and Ireland who spoke no Maltese and they said it was fine).
The only problem is entry requirements as the UK A Levels don't allow us to do all the subjects they require (unless you do IB in the UK).
General requirements are the subjects that anyone who wants to study any course at the University of Malta must have. For UK A Levels, these must be attained at grade E AS Level.
Group 1- a language
Group 2 - a humanity
Group 3 - a science/maths
Group 4 - an art (be careful as it seemed the only AS subject I could do that was art, drama etc.. was Computing becuase our Home Economics and ICT courses don't cover what they require here!).
You can pick more than one subject from each group, but people must have at least one.
THEN, there's the course specific requirements which are Biology, Chemistry and a third A Level all at grade B or above. These aren't the issue, but people may struggle with the general requirements as it's very difficult for us to take a minimum of 6 AS Levels and fit it into our timetable at school.
You can either take the AS subjects that you don't have after year 13 (or during if you want to teach yourself as you only need grade E), or you can do one year of medicine in a recognised UK University, and then drop out and transfer to Malta. You would have to start from year 1 again, but you will be at an incredible advantage!
Good luck guys <3 -
Re: University of Malta Medicine
Noone can help u.. except for the admissions themselves, they are very inconsistent with their applications haha
as long as u have B's in Bio and Chem at A level they will be happy, and a B in a language would be ideal.
i have a 2.2 degree in biomed
B's in a level bio chem and maths
B in AS german
got straight in without exam/interview.
good luck. -
Re: University of Malta Medicine(Original post by Shreyank)
To anyone that can help...
Are there limited spaces for medicine students at university of malta? i hear dentistry is limited to 6 students or something ?
Are late applications accepted ? how competative is ? how many apps per place?
I am looking to apply with the following;
A2: Chem-A, Bio-B, Maths-A, Electronics -A
If they dont accept a late application then ill be applying in the final year of a chemical engineering degree, maybe 2.1
will my application be competative? do they require academic references ? will i have to do an interview or entrance exam as i read some you guys havent had to.
I appreciate any help/advice you can offer me.
I can't really help too much (you will have to speak to admissions) but they do have limited places as does every Uni, although the numbers are increasing each year apparently so I really don't know how many there are!
I don't think it's nearly half as competitive as it is in UK Uni's because all they care about is grades. There is no entrance exam or any additional exams (like UKCAT) as far as I'm aware but you absolutely have to have the right grades (B or above in Bio, Chem and another A-Level). The A-Levels are extremely tough in Malta so a B grade sounds like an A* when I talk to my Maltese friends, whereas a B in the UK is pretty rubbish regarding really academic university courses.
So, you definitely do have the correct A2 grades but obviously not the AS grade E's in the 4 sections that I mentioned above. However, if you're allowed to study one year in a recognised UK Uni doing a medical related course (either medicine or something like biomed science), then I don't see why a full on 2.1 degree wouldn't qualify you. They only need the AS's or the years uni experience as this broadens your general knowledge and skills before you go to the University of Malta.
I think interviews aren't very common, but aren't unheard of either. I guess they don't really have much to talk about in the interview apart from school achievements (as that's all that matters to them), but they can find that out by looking at results! However, they do hold them sometimes apparently but I have no clue of who they pick, why and when!
Re late entry, I have no idea. I expect you could do some kind of clearing process where if not enough people have got the right grades then there will be places open to you, but that's literally a wild guess!
I would honestly email the international admissions people and tell them every detail of your circumstance as they sometimes are a bit confused and confusing (although their English is just as good as ours), so spell it out clearly and politely to get the best help. If all else fails, I'd try and ring them which would be your best bet as you will get sent to the right person if you aren't already talking to them, although calls may be expensive. If you are to ring, only call between 8am-1pm Mon-Fri during the summer (June-September) (Malta is 1h ahead of the UK) as these are the only hours they work in the heat and summer holidays.
Hope this kind of helps, but please don't take any of this for Gods word and check it out! -
Re: University of Malta MedicineI am also a transfer student, I want to so study in malta for the 3rd year. I am also applying from Romania. Did you get the timetable for the exams(Original post by carmelo)

Re: University of Malta Medicine
Can anyone help me in attempting to understand how the application system works.
I have applied with
A*-Bio
A-Chem
A-Psychology
b in AS Arabic, though the only real problem is that AS arabic was taken in year 12 so is not in the same exam time as the rest.
Does this ultimately mean my hopes are over as I don't see Psychology as one of the listed subjects.
Furthermore once you are accepted do you have to bring all certificates with you, and also is accommodation near the university cheap? I've tried to call the uni several times, nobody ever picks up and when they do they fail to explain whether i am legible with my qualifications... -
Re: University of Malta Medicine
If you call them before 1pm then they are more likely to answer. Your grades look fine to me but it's best that you speak to them to confirm.

Re: UoM loans??
Hey guys...I've been found that tuition fees are about 23000 Euros for non-EU students. Does anyone know if UoM will accept government loans for fee paying students?? I am from the US and thinking about applying here but I couldn't find information about this from their website.
Thanks for any clarification.
Best of luck to everyone. -
Re: University of Malta Medicine
Ok thanks a lot. But could anyone also answer whether we need to bring official documents once we are offered a place and how university life is like.
Also how are the expenses and living costs? Ideally if you are a current British student please explain the process after getting the offer and where you found residence and what documentation must be bought with you?
Thanks -

Oh no. when I read that you had to do your exams in one sitting, I thought it meant within the normal 2 year period. I was planning to sit AS english language this year and then apply. Gonna get in touch with them ASAP! -

Re: University of Malta MedicineI am bringing my undergraduate degree certificate/ letter form university stating the completed degree - this I believe is required for official enrollment in classes. I decided to rent a flat instead of living in the university residence because it was closer to the university and ultimately cheaper and more value for your money. My flat is about 2 to 3 minutes walk from the university.(Original post by Insane monkey)

Re: University of Malta Medicine
There are two deadlines: Nov/Dec and June/July. You must finish your A2 level exams in one year and your A-levels in 2 yrs.
Once you have submitted your online application you might get asked to send a scanned copy of your certificates. You will also need to bring official certificates when enrolling to the programme.
I have a limited info on accommodation
