Who are your top 10 F1 drivers of all time?
Ok, I'll start. This is just my personal opinion, so don't flame me, ok? (I made a few changes, I might change this from time to time if I think of someone I didn't include).
1. Ayrton Senna
2. Michael Schumacher
3. Alain Prost
4. Nigel Mansell
5. Jim Clark
6. Fangio
7. Niki Lauda
8. Jackie Stewart
9. Graham Hill
10. Giles Villeneuve
Just outside the top 10 for me would be Damon Hill, James Hunt, Nelson Piquet, Fernando Alonso, Emerson Fitipaldi, Mario Andretti and Sebastian Vettel. Lewis Hamilton could also be up there if he gets his act together and wins more titles. The thing about Lewis is that, good as he is, he's never really totally dominated a season in the way some drivers have, and he lacks consistency, so I think he still has a lot to prove. But I think he'll get there.
Man, this was tricky!...Last edited by super_dooper; 05-02-2012 at 00:41. -

Re: Who are your top 10 F1 drivers of all time?
Good list.
My top 10
1. Schumacher
2. Prost
3. Senna
4. Fangio
5. Brabham
6. Lauda
7. Hakkinen
8. Stewart
9. Moss
10. Alonso
Right now Alonso's in my top 10 for being the best of the most competitive grid of champions in the sport's history, which is no mean feat, but also as the guy who dethroned Schumi and brought an end to F1's most dominant reign. If Alonso gets some more titles in the next few years, he'll go in my top 5. -

Re: Who are your top 10 F1 drivers of all time?Alesi never did anything special in his career. He had just 1 win, and never challenged for the title. I wouldn't put him anywhere near the top 10 of all time, but each their own. That said, I liked Alesi when he was racing - he was a typical fiery Frenchman, and some of his after-race rants were funny as ****. I remember him criticising Eddie Irvine after a race once, saying 'he's rude, he's arrogrant, he's dangerous', etc....all in his trademark French accent lol.(Original post by The_master616)

Re: Who are your top 10 F1 drivers of all time?A lot of his career was dogged by **** unreliable Ferraris. Had he signed for Williams instead, we'd be looking at a multiple world champ.(Original post by super_dooper)

Re: Who are your top 10 F1 drivers of all time?Lol Schumacher's reign was brought to an end by a cockup by Bridgestone. The Ferrari car itself was very quick- and with michelin tyres the F2005 would've dominated 2005. But fairplay for 2006 (even though Ferrari and Schumacher cost themselves that title).(Original post by Marc Fiorano)

Re: Who are your top 10 F1 drivers of all time? Why do you say that? Nigel Mansell was an amazing driver. He was blindingly quick. He was the one man besides Prost who was able to challenge, and beat, Senna. Mansell had guts and determination galore. He was a very flamboyant driver, he was ultra consistent in that he never had bad days and he hardly ever made mistakes.(Original post by Leavemyarcelona)
Im sorry but there is absolutely no way that nigel mansell should be ranked higher than jim clark and juan manuel fangio, no chance.
Witness, for example, his win at Silverstone in 1987 where he had to pit due to a tyre vibration. He rejoined the track 30 seconds down on leader Nelson Piquet. He caught and passed Piquet, breaking the lap record numerous times, to take a magical win, to the delight of the British fans.
Mansell was every bit as good as Senna and Prost. He should've been champion at least 2 or 3 times, and it was just bad luck that robbed him of more titles. In 1986, for example, he was only a few laps from winning the title when his tyre blew and lost him the championship. In 1987, his unlucky crash at Suzuka took him out of the title race. He was, in truth, a 3 times world champion who only won the title once in F1 because of a bit of bad luck.
Races were never dull when he was in them. He could often come from behind to take the win, and he was an amazing overtaker. He was one driver who could really take the car by the scruff of its neck and drive consistently on the limit.
The fact that he went to Indycars in 1993 and crushed the opposition in his first season there proves all you need to know. And when he came back to F1 in 1994, he won after just 4 races at the age of 41. Not even Schumacher was able to do that.
Mansell also deserves his place so high up because he did not come from a rich background. Unlike Senna, Hamilton, etc....Mansell had NO MONEY and had to fight his way up the lower formulas and he even had to remortage his house and work lots of crappy jobs just to keep his motor racing career alive. He had so much determination, and he got into F1 based on his sheer talent alone.
What I also like about him is that he was not a glitzy or glamorous person....he was just a down-to-earth, feet-on-the-ground, family man.
Read his autobiography and watch some documentaries about him if you want to know more. In short, he's a very under-rated driver, definitely one of the all time best. And with 31 wins, he stands behind only Schumacher, Prost and Senna in the number of wins.Last edited by super_dooper; 04-02-2012 at 23:39. -
Re: Who are your top 10 F1 drivers of all time?I agree with you about Alonso. He is a bloody good driver. The only reason I didn't put him in my top 10 is because he's still in the middle of his career and hasn't had a chance to 'settle' into the all-time F1 history book yets. But I think in, say, 10 years time, Alonso will be in most peoples' top 10. He will definitely win a few more titles, IF Ferrari can give him a car to compete.(Original post by Marc Fiorano)
Good list.
My top 10
1. Schumacher

Re: Who are your top 10 F1 drivers of all time? That engine failure in Suzuka was painful to watch. I remember it was Ferrari's first engine failure in something like 6 years, worst timing.(Original post by f1mad)

Re: Who are your top 10 F1 drivers of all time?Pretty much this list. I'd probably put Mansell in for Moss, and Hakkinen is so underrated when it comes to these sorts of lists tbh. Vettel will probably be in there somewhere by the time he comes to retire too.(Original post by Marc Fiorano)
