Masters Students at Goldsmith's Beginning 2012-2013
Hello
Hopefully i'll be studying for a masters in writing beginning september. Just wondering if there's anyone out there who could recommend places to live in london (I currently study in sheffield and dont know my way around london particularly) and where i might find similar students who i could arrange to live with?
Thanks! -

Hey!!! i'm been accepted for my MA at Goldsmiths too..not sure yet whether I'll be firming there or QUB..or fingers crossed Exeter. I'm going to be looking for somewhere to live too but I'll be traveling over from NYC (hopefully with my cat in tow)! If you find a good thread on this...let me know!!!

Hiya!
I'm going to be attending in September as well! I'm actually an Expat- I was born in London, but raised here in the US and will be coming back to London to live for the first time
I'm really excited- going to write and accept my offer tonight or tomorrow, still letting it all sink in! -
Re: Masters Students at Goldsmith's Beginning 2012-2013
I just got my offer for MA today
it'll be part time as I have to work to support myself and pay the fees! I'll be commuting from about an hour away, I can't wait! Lots of friends in London so I can stay with them when I need to be at Uni. It's a bit of a dream for me
well done everyone.
For the person who asked about how long it takes for them to offer you a place, I really have no idea it took them months to get back to me. If you e-mail them they are really helpful. -

I heard about...3 days after I had my phone interview? but it took them 3 weeks to contact me about the interview...so all in all it took about a month

Tel8 and kbaher....what are you going for??
I'm going for Journalism!
Totally excited!!

Re: Masters Students at Goldsmith's Beginning 2012-2013
If all the financial stuff works itself out, I'll be at Goldsmiths in September for an MA in Applied Theatre!!! I can't wait!! A little worried about New Cross..but coming from NYC I think I probably won't find it too rough lol
Absolutely love the staff I've spoken with so far!!!
Any other US students waiting to hear about Loan Entitlements? -
Re: Masters Students at Goldsmith's Beginning 2012-2013I am! Although I'm not technically an American- I was born in London and we've got greencards (lolz) but I'm still having to pay overseas fees because I haven't been in the UK for three consecutive years in a loooong time. I'm actually planning to stay permanently, which is why I'm going back to the UK for my Masters (this is probably tmi though(Original post by vassrbex)

I used to live in NY ages ago! We were in Long Island but have since moved south (fun.) .
Thank you! I'm very very excited- actually, I'm probably near having fits with how giddy I am about the whole business, but Applied Theatre sounds totally cool!!! Are you coming straight from undergrad? I am and I'm a bit worried about how much older everyone else might be (also, I think we have a choice between Dean's house and the Intercollegiate halls? The website seems to suggest that we get assigned quite specifically as masters students...)(Original post by vassrbex)
Tel8, I hear Goldsmiths Journalism dept is AMAZING!!!! CongratsLast edited by Tel8; 01-04-2012 at 01:12. -
Re: Masters Students at Goldsmith's Beginning 2012-2013
Hey Tel8!
So funny...I'm actually in the middle of applying for my dual citizenship as I'm in a similar position! Heading over there partially due to school costs and partially because I want to go over there and stay!
Not TMI at all! haha
I'm super excited about Applied Theatre...though a bit worried about what New Cross will be like...and even though I'm coming from NYC, wonder if I'm not going to be a tad overwhelmed my first few weeks in London! I'm not coming straight from undergrad...I am one of the old ones! I'll be 29 when I get there, but who knows...maybe i'll take this opportunity to pretend i'm 23 again! hahah
I think we do have that choice...though I wonder if Dean's house will be much more convenient. It's right on campus and it appears to be extremely close to the tube stop?? I don't know much about the Intercollegiate halls... -
Re: Masters Students at Goldsmith's Beginning 2012-2013
The Intercollegiate halls are a bit futher away, and I was kind of worried that I wouldn't be able to meet as many people that way (much as I would seriously LOVE to have my own kitchen- I honestly hate sharing here but it's a probably going to be good if I share there, it'll force me out of my shell
)
On the other hand, the intercollegiate halls are quite nice I think? A bit more expensive definitely. I wish there was more pictures of the interiors of both halls...
That's great that your getting dual! I'm going to have to get my gc extended once I'm home for the summer (dunno why, but I don't think we can get dual- something about our situation? Ugh. Legal matters
)

Re: Masters Students at Goldsmith's Beginning 2012-2013
Hey everyone.
Dean's House is the top of my list. I'm an international student as well (well, a dual citizen with the US and the UK but I grew up in the US) so I'm taking full advantage of the reserved room in halls.
I'm doing the MA in Arts Administration & Cultural Policy, Music Pathway!
I took a year off after undergrad so I'm kind of still in student mode. -
Re: Masters Students at Goldsmith's Beginning 2012-2013Yay! More Dean's house people! It really makes me feel better that there are a few of us expats - I really thought I'd be the only one and end up having to awkwardly explain that "no no, I'm a British citizen, I was just brought up in America!" Lol(Original post by JenBarnes207)

Re: Masters Students at Goldsmith's Beginning 2012-2013
ACTUALLY, my parents are the expats, I'm first generation american, born in New Haven...BUT I consider myself a happy little blend of the two.
I might throw a fit if I don't get Dean's House..i'd rather not live with undergrads...been there, done that.
I have no idea how to quote people and respond to them directly. I'll figure it out later. -
Re: Masters Students at Goldsmith's Beginning 2012-2013No worries, there's only three or four people active in this part of the forum(Original post by JenBarnes207)

That's pretty cool actually, I've just got the awkward conversations
I think it'll be quite nice in Dean's house, but I wonder if it'll be too quiet? I know they separate us Master's students, and I'd rather be with people my age, but still... I don't want it to be super duper quiet... I still want to party!! I think it's Raymont that's a mix of both levels, but I'm not sure.Last edited by Tel8; 02-04-2012 at 23:08. -

Raymont doesn't seem like a bad option either. I'd be happy with either, honestly, I just want my own bathroom.
I'm sure there will be awkward conversations. I have them here all the time..."o you're going to school in the uk...why? O your parents are scottish? o, you're a british citizen AND an american citizen....is that legal...?". It's a running joke with my friends that I'm a terrible american anyways. I blame the parents. Or thank them.
Intercollegiate halls just don't seem worth the extra expense, in my opinion. I'd rather use my money for more exciting things, aka: food, alcohol and trips. After all, I figure my room will just be a place to sleep at the end of the day. -
Re: Masters Students at Goldsmith's Beginning 2012-2013
Feel the same about Intercollegiate Halls but I'm def hoping for Dean's house. I want to TRY and keep my partying and my studying place separate but that's cuz I'm old and decrepitate. lol aka almost 30
I'm actually finishing up my app for my British passport as I type! Very exciting!!!! I remember when we first moved to the US, I refused to say the Pledge of Allegence in school (I was 6) and I believe I got into some trouble for that. hehehe
I'm really really really hoping to be able to travel a bit. I love Ireland and I'm definitely hoping to spend some time back there as well as France. Fingers crossed I'll have the cash!
Totally excited!!
