Well he does kind of speak the truth. Giffgaff data is not unlimited as such, if you use too much they give you a data ban and you must contact a giffgaff agent to get the ban removed. Theoretically though you can use as much as you want, but as I said they do actively issue data bans.

Yeah but anyone using a normal amount won't get banned, and they don't allow tethering, so nobody really should be using over a normal amount.

But "a normal amount" would differ depending on what you use your phone for.
Someone who uses their phone for just facebook, google and maybe youtube will use an awful lot less than someone like me who uses their phone to watch live TV, stream iPlayer, download large apps etc etc. You would be surprised how quickly things like iPlayer, Sky Go, TVcatchup etc etc use data.

One would assume they are refering to peer to peer file sharing but I do not know for sure. Check on the giffgaff forum to make sure though.

I think you're confusing AUP with FUP. Yes, an AUP always applies to all UK based ISPs, even if they don't explicitly state them their upstream Tier provider will have an AUP.

It's FUP that applies to most so-called 'unlimited' Internet plans. It's a fact that you can't have an unlimited supply for a limited price, but consumers demand 'unlimited' plans so networks have to oblige. It's pure craziness but I don't see it changing in the near future.

And, FYI, research showed that 'just O2' provides on average the fastest mobile broadband in the UK.

Oh I See. Actually, I don't know how bandwidth is shared with virtual networks. Whether it is on an equal basis with the operator or not. Either way, though, it's still very much dependent on where you live and sadly the UK remains far behind many other countries in both the fixed and mobile internet stakes

It's a clear fact that network bandwidth is not infinite and you can't have an unlimited supply for a finite cost. 3 DO do unlimited. Like real unlimited. Would cost me £3 extra per month (on a 24 month contract for £17 a month with 500 mins, 5000 texts and 1gb internet at the moment - I did get a Galaxy S2 for an initial £70 too). For now though, 1gb is fine for me because everything I use that uses a large bandwidth (netflix, youtube, bbc iplayer) either require wifi or I almost always use on wifi anyway.

They implement throttling for high usage customers which means your speed goes right down to a trickle.

You should check out the giff gaff forums for info on this issue. It is not unlimited. They will cut off heavy users, even if they are using data within the T and Cs. They have not specified a limit, but it is not unlimited.

The discussions on there are pretty much a mirror of this thread- people arguing about the definition of unlimited, people saying its great because i can use lots of data but only if i don't use too much (re:'normal' amounts), and then the GG evangelicals doing their unpaid advertising whilst frothing at the mouth.
