    That is upon the addition of D20. TMS or tetramethylsilane is used as a reference peak, as it is very close to a 0 value.

    yep, basically when a halogen alkane is added to excess amonia...for example

    ch3ch2cl + 2nh3 ---> ch3ch2nh2 + nh4cl

    so an ammonium chloride ion is formed. but when ammonia is not in excess
    HCL is formed ...does that make sense?

    THANKS..very helpful but is this the same as the alevelchem wensite question packs?

    D20 helps identify the 0H groups
    TMS is used for a refeerence peak as it is:

    chemically inert so it doesn't react with the sample and
    volatile so it can easily be removed afterwards...

    no its first time ? but the paper was nice i did it as mock the Jan 2012 and got a high B
