I'm studying abroad next year & one of my flatmates is moving out, but the other 3 (2 girls & a guy) want to stay here, so they'll start flatmate hunting soon. If you were interested, I could PM you when they put up the add (probably on gumtree, that's how I found them last year). We're on South Clerk Street, at the junction with Sainsburies & Papa Johns.

I have a tangentially-related question. When a self-catered flat is listed as 'single', does that only mean 'single' size or single occupant?

Gentle bump for my probably silly question~.

Single room, in a flat with other people, I think. The uni do have some single person bedsit-type flats, but they are aimed at continuing students.

That sounds great to me! I just love having my own bedspace bubble for studying or downtime.

Bonjour again all - another issue:
In the T&Cs, it says that Edinburgh guarantee accommodation if your place is Unconditional Firm (UF).
They say that accommodation is not necessarily guaranteed if your place is Conditional Insurance.

I have the problem that literally nothing is said about those of us who hold Conditional offers and who will be firming it - I don't understand what's going on.
Would anyone be kind enough to shed light on this? Will I be guaranteed some kind of accommodation rather than being forced into a bunk room or something?

Thank you in advance etcetc.

How much do you usually spend on food a week? I'm considering going catered, but I don't know if I'll be paying loads more. The difference between self catered and catered is about £60?

I'd say £15-20, excluding alcohol. I don't think I spend £60 even now I'm on my year abroad in Sweden, where food is somewhat more expensive. Bearing in mind that that figure is for all three meals whereas you only get two in Pollock anyway.

Thanks that would be great! I actually live on Clerk Street at the moment and I can see Sainsburys from my window :p:. I'd love to find out a bit more about them to see if we'd be a good fit with eachother .

Also, how many people are there per flat in catered accommodation?

It's to those who have an unconditional by the 30th of August. If you make your conditions, your application will change from conditional to unconditional and you'll be guaranteed accommodation.

Your question doesn't really make sense. If you're put in a bunked room then you've been provided with accommodation - the guarantee only states that they will find you accommodation - not what kind of accommodation it has to be.
I have a question. I am leaving in Pollock halls right now. And for next year, i.e. September 2012 entry, can I apply for self-catering outside Pollock halls but the university accommodation like Darroch court or something ?
Do they give accommodation to overseas students after they have finished one year in the university ?

Someone who lives there correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty certain catered is not done in flats - the only way to do catered is Pollock, where you're in a room on a corridor.

You can't apply for the first year accommodation like Darroch, Sciennes, etc. If you get yourself together with some friends, they do have a few university-owned flats scattered around, and some one-roomed apartments, but I don't think the apartments are meant to be particularly good value.

Sorry I meant how many rooms per corridor, like in your section of halls who you share the kitchen with.

It varies. But it's not a kitchen - don't kid yourself that it is. Access to a kettle, toaster, microwave and fridge is NOT a kitchen.

No. There is returners accommodation in Blackfriars Street, or some of the flats (although then you may as well rent from anybody - those aren't anything special). You could become an RA.

Thank you for your reply. I will look for some studio flats outside.
I'll be an international student (from America) this September and was wondering what the best accommodation would be for me. I'm torn between catered and self-catered. I would have no problem making my own meals and being independent but have heard the social experience at self-catered is not as nice as in the halls. Since i won't know a single soul in Edinburgh and I will only be staying in university accommodation one year will I have the better experience in the halls? Which halls are nicest to live in? Which flats are nicest?

The social experience is what you make of it, really. If you're the type to meet everyone, then you'll do that in Catered or Self catered. If you're not, being in catered won't change that.

I lived with a total of four American exchange students in my first year, in SC flats. They all enjoyed themselves immensely, and socialised widely. It helps that Edinburgh is full of American students too, so there's always someone having the same experience.
Is Unite Edinburgh a good website to look for flats ? Has anyone lived in one of their accommodation before ?

Unite, iq, ziggurat, fresh student living, etc - are all a rip off. If paying a fortune for private halls is your kind of thing, then sure, do it.
