Seriously, a 20 minute walk is nothing.

Yes you could take the bus but by the time you've stood and waited for the bus, got on the bus, travelled in busy Edinburgh traffic then got off the other end and walked to your class (likely to be about 5 mins from the bus stop) then that will probably take you longer than the 15-20 minutes it will take to walk to where you want to go. From 2nd year onwards its likely that you'll live in Marchmont at some point (or south of the Meadows) and then getting a bus would take you longer as on foot you can walk straight across the Meadows whereas a bus has to go all of the way around.

Most students at Edinburgh walk everywhere. I think I used a bus about 4 times during my entire time at Edinburgh. People get taxis in a group if they're going out on George Street but other than that everyone just walks or uses a bike. Its amazing to live in a capital city where you can quite literally walk everywhere you need to go on a daily basis, and its such a beautiful walk, particularly if you are going across the Meadows. I now live in London and getting the tube/bus everywhere is a big pain and an added expense I didn't have as a student.

That sounds lovely. Such a contrast to the city I live in right now- you can't get anywhere by foot. Even my school is 1 hour away by bus...

yeah they do but the majority of the world finds that the world of Pollock is close enough for their en suite catered needs....

Why does everyone on this thread seem to have an obsession with having accommodation that is closest to the location of subject X??

I don't think this was anything I considered at all when applying for university and my little brother (current UCAS applicant) hasn't really expressed this as an issue in his accommodation search anywhere as when you look at a map of universities like Edinburgh then it's quite clear that the distance is marginal :s-smilie: I just applied for the accommodation that seemed to be the best then was subsequently allocated somewhere I'd never even looked at on a map before. It was a brilliant year

Personally, I got spoiled in undergrad when I could wake up at 7:00, have a leisurely breakfast in the dining hall and then be 10-15 minutes early for my 8:00 class. I now live about a mile from my campus, which is considered far since I live in a really small city at the moment (~50k). I'm also not really a morning person, honestly I would probably stay up until 1 or 2 and then sleep till noon everyday. It's also nice to be close if you need to visit the library late at night.
Wheres a good self catered option close to Cowgate/Grassmarket area?
I find the uni website's accomodation page really difficult to nagivate sorry!

Go back onto the page before you in this thread and you'll read a discussion about this -- TSR isn't difficult to navigate
Huge apologies if this has been discussed, but could one of you lovely folk please confirm that the only self-catered ensuite university accommodation available for first year undergraduates in Sept 2012 is Beaverbank and Morgan Court?
Dear All,

I am applying for postgraduate accommodations (self catered). I will study in the Business School. I thank you all in advance for your answers and your help.

A few questions;

1. How are the new Richmond Place residences? Is it a flat that you share with other people, with the one difference that these are en suite rooms? Or is it just a hall, where it is difficult to socialise?

2. Asham Court is my first choice. Do you think they are good?

3. Is Mylnes court far away from the Business School, or is it fine? Would you recommend me to apply for these halls as well?

I don't really know which hall I should select to be honest. If I understood well they all are similar; flats of about 5/6 people. Only Richmond place differs with an ensuite room. Am I correct? Could you please answer my questions and eventually give me some other suggestions?

Thank you very much, I really appreciate your help guys.

See you,

Nicolas

is there anyone with the experience of living near george square with lecture etc at kings buildings? how are the timings, how likely are you to get on it, is it better just to get a regular bus pass and use that?

I'm an international postgrad and I'm looking at self-catered accommodations for my one year stay in Edinburgh. Does anyone have any opinion on West Mains Road? My classes are going to be in King's Building so that looks like the best place to stay in terms of location.

Just Beaverbank, Morgan Court isn't available for undergraduates this year.

My understanding is that they intend to primarily place postgraduates in Beaverbank. To be honest, I probably wouldn't live down there anyway - not as a first year undergraduate.

I will be postgraduate student and have lectures near the George Square, is Morgan Court a good choice? I chose Morgan Court and Richmond Place for accommodation preference

Hi everyone! Just a few questions.

I'm currently choosing between Morgan Court (although I've heard people say that this is not available this year for undergraduates?), Darroch, Fraser Court and Kincaid's Court. I've seen comments about some of them, but if anybody could give me any more opinions or tips then that would be much appreciated!

Also, for those who have lived in self-catered- how is the bathroom situation? Is it hard sharing one shower between 4/5? Or am I right in thinking that with different lecture times etc... it isn't actually much of a problem?

Thanks

It's a nice area of town, it's just a bit far from things. It's beyond a comfortable walking distance to central area (by which I mean it's far enough that if it was raining I wouldn't leave the house).

There were 4 girls (including me) in my flat, 3 of with long hair who liked to spend a while washing it in the shower, and the 4th re-dyed her hairs every few weeks, spending a while in the shower, and we never had a problem with it. Even on days where we all had 10am classes for our first one of the day, it wasn't like there was ever a rush on the shower.

Can anyone comment on a shared room? Is it really that bad?

I've never had a problem and I'm now in my 6th year of sharing accommodation, and therefore bathrooms with other people. In that time I can't think of a period where I lived with people whereby the fact we only had one bathroom was ever an issue as everyone works in different ways. In a lot of the s/c accommodation you have a separate toilet in addition to the bathroom which is really useful, then I also had that in two of my private flats which was really good.

As has been said, people just work things out like you do with your family at home. When you're a student you run a weird timetable whereby you don't get up at the same time every day and having a shower is as appropriate at 3pm as it is at 9am or 9pm meaning there's never really a set time that everyone always wants to use the bathroom, because you all just run on your own time. I lived with a girl one year who spent AGES using fake tan so would have a shower every morning, fake tan herself then spend about 30 mins just standing in the shower waiting for it all to dry. She got up about 2 hours before she had to leave the house as she spent 90 minutes getting ready each morning so because of that she had already finished with the bathroom before other people got up to go out at the same time as her, because once she'd finished in the bathroom she then spent about 30 mins doing her make up. That's the most excessive bathroom usage I've lived with and it isn't an issue, especially if you all get into the habit of asking if people need to use the toilet before you have a shower if you're using it in the day/in the evening when others are in the flat.
