Re: F1 Engineers Salary
Working in F1 is not about the salary, it's more about the privilege to do it. I wouldn't be put off if I was offered a job in F1 but the salary happened to be minimum wage. I'd still go for it and there are many people just like me. I would expect the majority of F1 engineers to get paid slightly more than the average professional engineer due to the tight deadlines and relentless pressure in pursuit of few tenths of seconds around a lap.
It would seem obvious to think an engineer at McLaren, Ferrari or Red Bull would earn more than one at Caterham or Williams but I suspect on the whole, people working back at base would have pretty comparable salary packages. I'd expect the gaps between salaries would only start to appear further up the hierarchy in that Adrian Newey would probably earn more than someone like Nick Wirth did (prior to his sacking) solely from their involvement as an individual in Formula 1.
Budget, I'm sure, plays a major factor in F1 and so certain teams have different resources to play around with so your role of an engineer needs to adapt accordingly (some teams have wind tunnels whereas some teams still use CFD mappings).
Finally, there is no team on the F1 grid this season called 'Brawn'. It got bought out by Mercedes at the end of 2009 and they haven't lived up fully to expectations. Competition for places in working in F1 are ridiculously high and only a chosen few get the privilege to do so. -
Re: F1 Engineers Salary
As I said depends on how high up the hierarchy you are. Someone working at base would probably get £20-£70k (probably around £30-40k is the mode salary) depending on what department and the role you play whereas a big player in a team would be into 7 or 8 figures.
If you want to do an engineer career because of the salary, you'll most likely move into finance and become a chartered accountant. -

Newey was reported to get 10mil a year in an article a while back and even if it's true, he is debatably, the best in the world at what he does. I think you'd have to be pretty exceptional to even get 7, if your very good and senior I would guess high 5 figure or low six figure. Though I may be completely wrong. -

But you're right in that generally most people don't just decide that they want to work in F1 and then have it fall into their laps just like that.

Re: F1 Engineers Salary
Would imagine it would be good. People who work in Aero and stuff are usually grad's, so you would need a good salary to attract the top grads. Also its a very people based business, you need ideas and innovation, so I would imagine poaching regularly occurs, and the higher salaries that make that possible.
I don't know exactly how much but it would seem enough, that if money is not your sole motivation, if it was you wouldn't be heading into F1. -
Re: F1 Engineers SalaryWhat about you? For the money or for the love of the sport?(Original post by Lib)

Re: F1 Engineers SalaryI used to want to be a marine biologist, so that probably tells you all you need to know about the importance for salary for me.(Original post by mikeyd85)
What about you? For the money or for the love of the sport?
Then Damon Hill won the championship in '96 and my parents started watching F1 on a regular basis, and I changed my mind. (Also, I get horribly sea sick and I was always far better at maths/phyics than biology/chemistry!)

Re: F1 Engineers SalaryI'd expect the chief engineer in a team to have a salary on par with the lead driver minus sponsorship income.(Original post by Fuzzed_Out)

One of my friends is on an internship in the Aero sector at RB this year and has been offered a job regardless of whether he completes the MEng he's supposed to come back and finish at Southampton.
I believe his offered starting salary is around £50-55k.
Southampton FTW!
That is a lot of money!

Re: F1 Engineers SalaryJeez that is some good money! congrats to your friend!(Original post by marcusmerehay)

why not try asking this user
she works as a f1 engineer, and her boyfriend works in marketing, sponsorship and press/pr for the same team .... so she ought to provide you with information on the working lifestyle and more realistic salary figures for this industry than most others on here who would just give you estimates or speculate .. x

Re: F1 Engineers SalaryThey don't put the salary on those kinds of ads.(Original post by Mufasaa)
There's a few adverts for this sort of thing in autosport magazine quite a lot, but I can't be bothered going to find a copy...
You probably get a good company car too, depending on the team.
We do have a couple of Lotus' (Lotii??) parked out the front but they're for the really big boys. James (TD) just has a Scenic, but then he's really not into cars at all. My old boss (DO Manager) who went to Merc got a nice company car with the move though. -

My friend's Dad who worked for McLaren for a few years then RBR got a Mercedes with McLaren (although they were McLaren Mercedes at that point) and I can't remember what he had with RBR but it was still a decent car. He wasn't a higher-up either, when the teams had to cut down to 450 staff he got made redundant.
