Re: The things you like or dislike about your own country?
Born in England, though mum is from Hong Kong and I now live in Switzerland.
Things I like about Switzerland :-
1) One of the highest standards of living.
2) Long term focused culture.
3) Save first spend later attitudes.
4) Lower taxes and generally feel you get good value for what you pay.
5) Crime rates that are among the lowest in the civilized world.
6) The mountains and lakes.
7) The efficiency of most things and lack of redtape.
8) The standard of work ethics.
9) Politicians that you can genuinely trust and the stability that comes with it.
10) General high respect for privacy.
Things I don't like.
1) Cost, everything is expensive here (except my salary
)
2) Social life / scenes here suck... everything closes on a Sunday.
3) Hard to get away with things, generally a "no excuses" type of place.
4) Money doesn't buy you the kind of privileges as per UK or Hong Kong.
5) Everything is on a slope or hill
Things I like about Hong Kong :-
1) The industrious people and their work ethic.
2) The food, especially seafood and dimsums. Even the McDonalds taste better there.
3) LOW taxes.
4) Shopping.
5) The privileges money buys.
6) Efficiency of everything considering the resources.
7) A true example of a place that has social mobility.
8) Relatively clean considering its neighbours.
9) Good education system.
10) TVB
Things I don't like :-
1) Claustrophobic.
2) Homes are so small and expensive.
3) Most expensive parking rates I've seen in the world. (if you can find one that is)
4) Too damn many "locusts" that are ruining the cultures and environment.
5) Pollution especially from China.
6) Poor regard for any of the heritage buildings or sites, everything seem to get demolished for even higher buildings to go up.
Things I like about UK :-
1) The countrysides.
2) The diversity.
3) Cheap stuff are really cheap, expensive stuff aren't that expensive when it goes on sale.
4) Food, no shortage of varieties and choices.
5) Loads of investment opportunities and generally a big enough consumer market for a lot of things.
Things I don't like.
1) The politicians......ALL of them are dodgy characters.
2) The taxes, too high and relatively poor value for what you get in return.
3) Crime which is too for a supposedly civilized country.
4) Chavs, too damn many of them and appalling that nothing is done about them.
5) Too much bureaucracy, redtape and regulations to adhere to.
6) Too obsessed with the past.
7) Poor work-ethics.
8) Short term focused.
9) Something for nothing culture.
10) Too obsessed with wealth redistribution rather than wealth creation. -

Are you on dual British/Swiss citizenship? -

Switzerland seems nice! Its one of my must-travel-to destinations of all time, especially Geneva.
Are you on dual British/Swiss citizenship?
Most people tend to find Interlaken to be the must see of Switzerland.
Will be a Swiss citizen in April, haven't quite decided yet if I would give up the British one. -
Re: The things you like or dislike about your own country?
UK
Like:
-Long, quite interesting history (if quite corrupt at times)
-Some places have gorgeous buildings (Bath, Oxford, York)
-Fish and Chips
-The NHS
-Weather (I'm not a lover of the sunny weather in other places)
-Some of the best universities in the world (Oxbridge)
-Music (Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath)
Dislikes:
-The government (whoever you vote for, they're just lying to get votes)
-Tabloid newspapers, mainly The Sun
-Chavs
-Low work ethnic
-Expensive tuition fees
-Materialism
-Peoples ideas that everything will be spoon-fed to them from a gold plater plate
-Celebrity culture
-New music
-TV (Can't stand the likes of Jeremy Kyle and X Factor)
-Everything feels too costly (which most things are)
-Get ripped off when things are converted e.g. Paying more for something here then what you would if bought in Japan or America (mainly on items such as Macs and games consoles)
-Lack of control or discipline in schools
-The slow decline in education
-Peoples depressing attitudes, people at my school constantly moan...be happy!
(then again, this list is in a way moaning about the place I live
).

But if i were you, i'd probably make do with British citizenship and Swiss permanent residency. -
Re: The things you like or dislike about your own country?
Currently live in Brisbane, Australia, but originally from England.
LIKE (Australia)
- weather
- houses (soo much nicer than UK houses)
- relaxed atmosphere
- Gold Coast has a lot of HOTTT guys
- beaches are beautiful
- most suburbs are very pleasant looking and clean
- NO CHAVS
- A wide variety of cafes and restaurants here
- much higher salaries

DISLIKE (Australia)
- food is crap and ridiculously expensive
- quite a few racists here...
- apparently night life is rather dull in Brisbane (nothing like Manchester)
- free to air TV is utter ****e
- Julia Gillard (PM)
- trains and train services are quite poor -
Re: The things you like or dislike about your own country? But plenty of bogans and I hear some of their cities are full of a variant of chavs of foreign origins?(Original post by Aussie-Pom)

I don't really need UK citizenship as I'm unlikely to ever return to UK to live. Swiss citizenship is mostly for the ease when it comes to running my businesses, otherwise you are normally viewed with suspicion so it makes it easier to convince someone to invest in my businesses or by my products and services.(Original post by fellowjoe)

Re: The things you like or dislike about your own country?
I live in America.
Likes
-location; it's really gorgeous where I live, even if it's cold a lot of the time
-shopping; we have a lot of shops and brands that other countries don't have as much access to (Sephora is a guilty pleasure, for one thing, and ordering online is just too easy XD)
-higher education; disregarding the Big Three, Amherst, Middlebury, Williams, etc are all good colleges
-culture; I love the idea that our country is founded on immigrants, I personally think it's really nice to think about
-general access to plumbing, good housing, electricity, cars, good schools — these things are way too often taken for granted and I'm probably one of the worst offenders of all
-abundance; a good and bad thing, but I like being to just walk to the supermarket and pick up some cheese and fruit
Dislikes
-isolation; there are progressive areas of this country (NYC is a well-known one, for example), yet a lot of places are very isolated, imo
-our politics; they're really terrible, but I'm guessing people might know a bit about how terrible our politics are (and if you don't, well, lucky you that you don't have to know)
-college tuition; I'm really not a fan of paying forty thousand dollars per year, though I feel like most people aren't...
-stupidity; general one, but I really hate the amount of homophobics and disregard of lesser-off people we have in this country
-corruption; this goes in hand with politicians, but our companies get away with a lot tooLast edited by Veneta; 21-02-2012 at 01:16.
