In t20 cricket, as long as you can mix up your deliveries(you keep the batsmen guessing), you are a decent bowler! Most of the bowlers I have named-have good variations.
Kallis is (from a bowling POV) past it. He's a handy bowler, but hardly sets the world alight and wouldn't get selected as a bowler alone anymore.(Original post by razmazterz)

Russell,Pollard,Bravo have good variations and can bowl at decent pace which make make all three of them decent t20 bowlers! You havnt even emboldened them either

For t20 cricket these are impressive figures!
Another bowler I think is maturing and is become a fine bowler is Yadav!
Hilfenhaus must have improved since I last saw him play. Before he was one of Australias more mediocre players.
As for Bravo, he is a good bowler, but like Kallis he isn't picked for his bowling alone. The Windies have 5 better bowlers than Bravo, who only gets his place for his batting as well.
As for Russell and Pollard being world class bowlers....

Re: The Cricket Society IIII'd love to see West Indies for this T20 world cup pick Roach, a spinner then tank their team with all-rounders (Bravo, Sammy, Russell, Pollard) and back themselves to chase anything and everything.
Would be even more exciting if u scrap the spinner and play Gayle as the batsman/off-spinner :P -

They might(Kallis and Bravo) not be picked for their bowling but they do bowl their 4 overs and from time to time you see Kallis opening the bowling too!
You should have seen Hilfenhaus's bowling! He was swinging the bowl and troubling the batsmen. It felt like he was bowling in Australia! In the league encounter CSK and DD he knocked Sehwag's off stump whn the bowl pitched middle and leg!
Russell and Pollard do mix their deliveries. In t20 circket it doesnt take a lot to be a decent bowler. In t20 you considered a decent bowler if you have given 20 runs in your 4 overs without any wicket. And Rusell and Pollard usually do!Last edited by DeadBullyMafiosi; 26-05-2012 at 18:11. -

Re: The Cricket Society IIIBravo and Pollard worked out their schedule with the WICB. They have decided that it is more profitable for them to play IPL, and so the board has allowed them to. It was a mutual agreement. For Gayle, there were issues with him and the board, they have said that these have mostly been worked out, so I'm pretty sure we'll see him at least during the ODI series. Taylor, I believe they said, has not been playing in the domestic series, and thus could not be selected. For Sarwan, his form hasn't been great for the past couple years to be honest.(Original post by Kaz310)
DID YOU!? MY BAD. I have this tendancy of skim reading loads of posts before I finally contribute to what I want to say.
Just why oh why aren't Sarwan, Taylor, Bravo and Gayle not playing. Things would be alot more interesting. Lets hope all these new players don't fail like the lost crop did( Nash, Simmons, Morton( RIP), Smith) -

1. players play "full time" for their country, whereas in most other sports the play is far less frequent
2. There is a non-existent professional club structure in the WI, meaning that if you're not playing for the WI, you're not being paid.
3. You can make more playing for a couple months in the IPL than you would playing for WI, and for the "top" players like Gayle and Narine, this is an order of magnitude several times more than playing for your country. While some people would prefer their country, the cold hard truth is that this does not make financial sense for the top IPL players -

Re: The Cricket Society IIIIt's good in general. Pakistan cricket needs the bilateral ties with India, and the players could really use the money as well. And it's not like there will be fixture re-scheduling. Though I doubt it will improve our team...(Original post by TheProdigy2k9)
So apparently the Pakistan players will be in the next IPL. Not sure how I feel about this to be honest yet. -

Then there are some who played hardly any games at all, who I didn't bother including, because if they don't play, like Nannes or Langeveldt, they're hardly indicative of the strength of IPL.
That's 7 bowlers across 9 teams who played most matches for their teams and are of an international standard. That indicates a standard of bowling which is well below international standard. (Afridi, Ajmal, Gul, Broad, Dernbach, Bresnan, Swann, Finn, that's 8 off the top of my head, let alone the ones who overlap with IPL)

I've been pretty loose with the term 'international standard', to my mind it means being a competent non-third change bowler for a settled and decent international team. So, for example, Kieron Pollard, Albie Morkel and Jacques Kallis don't make the list, because they are eminently used as the fifth bowler. Shane Watson makes the list because he's regularly proved himself adequate. You could argue I'm inconsistent, but it's a subjective thing; I've put in Wayne Parnell but not Roelef Van der Merwe, but VDM doesn't get a game as Botha is around for SA, and Parnell is probably ahead of De Lange in SA's T20 pecking order (and Steyn/Morkel are rotated in those along). Similarly, Tait doesn't make the list simply because Australia don't use him anymore, they generally get Lee, Hilfenhaus/Bollinger and then make up the rest of the overs with their all-rounders, Christian, Watson, Hussey, Marsh etc.
Conclusion: If anyone thinks that IPL standard of bowling is anywhere near that of international cricket, then they're stupid. Don't get me started on fielding, and international batting beats IPL batting too, just because the IPL is played on tailor-made pitches that make batsmen look better than they are.
